Over 75,000 was a great effort. It was a Hawthorn home match, but it almost seemed on the TV coverage like the crowd was more Geelong than Hawthorn. It can obviously depend where the microphones are placed!

For those who were there, did the cats have a larger portion of the crowd support?

I was there and there were definitely a lot more Hawks supporters there. But I think considering we didn't have the numbers we did great with the noise factor! Especially with all the crap umpiring decisions we got, it helped to wind up the cats crowd!! And where I was sitting there was a large section of Geelong supporters hanging sh!t on Buddy (including me) every time he went near the ball! It was a great atmosphere!

From someone who was at the game Hawthorn had the vast majority of the crowd support (about 75-80% at a guess), although as you said that was obviously because it was their home game. The Olympic and Southern stands were pretty much filled with Hawks supporters, in the Ponsford where I was sitting it was about 50/50.

Great crowd again, but if we want this to truly become an annual fixture then we'll need to continue attracting crowds of 65k+, even when both clubs are struggling. If we can't manage to do that the AFL will simply drop the Easter Monday fixture like a hot potato and return our games to Etihad or Kardinia Park.

Was a good crowd but let's be honest it would get that much any time slot at any round of the year. I would prefer the day hosted different teams each year especially games that may draw more that day than they would at other times because as I said will make little to no difference to whenever the Hawks Cats games are.

Nuh, way more Hawks there. They were much louder too.

Having said that tho alot of them left with about 5-10 minutes to go in the 4th. We were dumbfounded at that, the game was still up for grabs!

They know when they're beat... My hawk mate called it early too!

They had a very easy shot on goal with a minute to go tho. Thank god they missed that cause there was still time to get another one!!

You never leave games that close.

Learnt my lesson at a certain game at Etihad with a certain player whose names rhymes with "Baccardi".
:(

How the umpire missed the Franklin throw in front of our goal before the ball was swept to the other end in those final minutes still has me bemused.

Not in the second half they weren't.

We were outnumbered, but Cats fans made a lot of noise during the comeback. We did all right considering it was their home game and they have 20,000 more members.

Yep, both my Hawk mates who I went with were down in the dumps when we hit the front for the first time in the 3rd.

"That's it, we're done."

One of them looked at the other with a resigned look and sighed "it took them 10 minutes to undo a half of footy."

After putting up with the high fives through the first half that made me smile like a Cheshire Cat.

When you see Geelong play in front of 75,000 people at the MCG in 2013 i can't help thinking this is where Gary Ablett jr is missed the most. Not in the lineup anymore, i think the team has more than covered him adequately, but football in general. ( No one is irreplaceable) It's the big stage, playing in front of huge crowds in front of a huge TV audience that he is missed the most. The media can talk him up as the great player he is and he deserves all the accolades, but footy is the loser with Gary Ablett turning it on up at Metricon playing in front of a bunch of ex pat Vics and South Aussies in retirement! What would you rather see Gary Ablett picking up 35 possessions and kicking 4 goals in front of 75,000 people against the Hawks or slicing through the hapless Saints like swiss cheese at Metricon? The fact that Geelong are still up there as contenders is truly a magnificent effort by all who administer this football club. Many a team would've have imploded after the events of 2010 with a 10 year coach and it's best player leaving at the same time. Geelong responded by winning the Premiership! You have to stop, think and shake your head sometimes at the remarkable achievements of this team these past 6 seasons. This is where the Suns have their work cut out for them, it took Geelong years to build up to this, beginning with Thompson's appointment in 2000. It won't come overnight for the Gold Coast Suns, they will win the odd game up there against similar opposition, but they won't beat anyone really good consistently for a couple of seasons. The big shame is Gary Ablett may never play finals football again.

^Fair point but Gold Coast and the AFL might argue that having Ablett in QLD will bring more people to Gold Coast matches and lift their profile (and the AFL) in a rugby heartland (in some ways it is like having Billy Slater and Cameron Smith playing rugby in Melbourne).

I'd be willing to bet there would be a few people who go to Gold Coast matches solely to watch Ablett play - I know I watched the game on telly with family (who are North and Bulldogs supporters) and we all just enjoyed the show Ablett put on.

Of course, from a selfish point of view I wish Ablett was still with Geelong.

down the jolimont end nothing but a sea of gold caps.

I've a friend who is a Hawks member and that is their season ticket holders area. A bit like KP where there are complete sections that are reserved prior to season beginning. They have a huge amount at the moment partly due to the fact they can get gf access with many of those particular memberships also.

I also sat with a Hawk mate who called it early. He didn't get out of his seat for most of the second half after been up and about in the first including a standing ovation for Shoemaker when he spoiled Hawkins.

Most of the Hawk supporters after the game had a very haunted look about them - lots of sleepness nights ahead thinking about our next clash.

Me and a few others were surrounded by Hawks fans. They were everywhere. Nothing compared with the noise in the third quarter though. A few Hawks fans a couple of rows in front of me decided they were done as soon as we took the lead in the third and took off.

Yeah there were more Hawthorn supporters from what I saw... but there was certainly a good proportion of Cats there. Considering the umpiring we had lots more to be vocal/disgusted about and you could definitely hear us, but the Hawks goal cheer was louder.

I was sitting up the back on level 1, so had an awesome view of all the Cats supporters jumping up after the siren! Was beautiful!

that would make sense. but also looking around the ground it just seemed to be a sea of gold caps.

also, i was standing in m56 and there were many empty seats in front of us. there should really be a process for these reserved seats to go back on sale instead of shunting people to level 4 on match day.

No. A good indicator is the crowd response when the sides run out on the field before the first bounce. There were definitely more Hawks supporters. When Geelong hit the lead in the 3Q Cats supporters became very vocal which may have created the impression there were more of us.

Hawks may have had the numbers with supporters, but in the 2nd q when the umps missed the high tackle and the deliberate out of bounds and then payed a free the other way. I have never heard cat fans so vocal. The other time was when the umps came off at half time. Very loud booing where I was. 15 to 9, rightfully so.
