Ranges hopefuls on track.

Eastern region manager Anthony Parkin said he expected the Ranges to continue providing AFL-level talent this season.

"I had a look at a projected draft and it's got three of our boys in the top 25 picks," he said

"We've got, probably, three really good chances of going early, then a couple we hope to get drafted and, maybe, one smoky.

"The boys are working well, things are pretty upbeat on the track. The next five weeks for us is when the hard work goes in.

"We don't have great depth this year, but we're trying."

"We've got 150 kids on the books, they're all out training at the moment. It's great to see."

Parkin identified the Ranges' best draft chances as Jonathon Patton, Michael Bussey and Hayden Crozier.

Patton, Eastern's best-and-fairest winner last year, is a powerhouse 196cm key forward from the St Simons junior football club and will be a key to the Ranges' 2011 campaign.

Bussey, an athletic 195cm key forward, and Crozier, a 184cm speedy midfield/forward, are both Rowville juniors and are also highly-rated prospects.

Went and watched the two practice match's on Friday night against Calder. I was amazed at the talent on display. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the games this season. In between attending the kids footy, hawks home games and perhaps Box Hill as well, its going to be a busy season :)

Ranges pins hopes on star
02 Mar, 2011 01:00 AM
EASTERN Ranges may not have a lot to be happy about leading into the TAC Cup season but one shining light is key forward Jonathan Patton.
The highly touted "power forward" and reigning club best-and-fairest will attract plenty of attention from AFL scouts and opponents this season.

Region manager Anthony Parkin said Patton was a player to watch for in 2011 after a superb bottom-age season.

"He's a power forward with a great set of hands," he said. "He'll anchor our forward line. At 196 centimetres and 93kilograms, he takes a lot of moving and is similar to Jonathan Brown.

I dont know any of the players, but going from the team list I was given on the night #17 Dylan AGNEW played well as did #22 PATTON, #33 Shane THOMPSON, #9 Jessie FIELD. (I am by no means an expert on good play, so my apologies to the other good players I havent mentioned :o )

Sorry, Monkhurst wasnt on the list, so I dont know if he played or not.

cheers,

Eastern Rangers has been an epic breeding ground for AFL players over the last few years and it will be interesting to see how many more enter the system this year. Not from Melbourne so don't know but it it a prestigious club that all the 'guns' go to or is it just a coincidence.

Looking at each clubs website, they've all had a lot of players drafted.

"Since 1992 the TAC Cup has become the major source of AFL Draftees with more players recruited to the AFL from the TAC Cup than from any other competition throughout Australia."

Eastern Ranges draws its players from the outer Eastern suburbs and is based in Kilsyth, near the Dandenong Ranges. So effectively it takes young players from the Eastern Football League and the Yarra Valley Mountain Districts Football League along with some other junior only leagues. Some players are invited to join Box Hill Hawks after they move on from the TAC Cup competition.

umm what ? I think the Chargers had 10 draft or rookie listed last year alone.

Both Oakleigh and Eastern have had a few drafted... but none of them have a long career in the afl... maybe 25 games if there lucky... go back over the names mentioned above... who are they 70% didnt play a game!!!

The obvious ones are the Scott brothers, Brad 168 games, Chris 215 games (dual premiership player), Wirrapunda, 227 games (one premiership) Kane Johnson, 220 games, (duel premiership player) Travis Cloke 124 games currently (premiership player).

If you check each TAC clubs website, they've all had a lot of players drafted. Some never make it any further, but that doesn't detract from the quality players coming up through those development squads.

Opening blow

Eastern Ranges, had a tough start to their season with a 103-point loss to Oakleigh Chargers at Visy Park in North Carlton on Sunday. Jonathon Patton kicked five goals for the Ranges to be their best player ahead of Ben Slattery and Patrick Lawlor. The Ranges will look for a better performance when they face Western Jets at Visy Park from 10am this Sunday.

Anyone who's familiar with the Ranges know much about Jordan Williams? Underage kid who kicked a goal in last week's shellacking. 177cm according to the squad list.

Essendon has a Jordan Williams eligible father/son in 2012 (son of Daisy) and i'm not sure if this is the same guy. There's another 17yo Jordan Williams who was in the Simon Madden development squad for Calder - not sure which if either of them are our boy...

The Eastern boy is from Woori Yallock, so i'm not sure if he is Daisy's kid.
Daisey was from Vermont.

Lost to the Jets by 4-5 goals.

Patton kicked 5 goals in the third quarter alone.

Freak. Top 10 draft pick.

I'm not sure the 5 gls in a quarter is true. He ended with 6 but he had a few early then spread them out.

Eastern is in for a long year with Patton missing for a chunk of it with Metro. They don't have much else out on the field if the truth be known.

Very true. He really held them together today. I was hoping for more from Bussey, but he didn't make much of a dent up forward and got destroyed by White when he went into defence

Greenwood wasn't too bad (#6?)

Ranges fade away

THE Eastern Ranges' slow start to the TAC Cup season has continued, as a late fade-out saw them defeated by the Western Jets, by 29 points, at Carlton's Princes Park on Sunday morning.

With the scores tied at 10.5-apiece at three-quarter-time, the Ranges were, well and truly, in the contest.

But, the Jets rallied to kick six straight, to the Ranges' 1.1, to run away with the win.

Eastern coach Darren Bewick said it was a combination of physical and mental fatigue, which led to the late-game slump.

"With 10 minutes to go we're one point in front. To get beaten by five goals or so is very disappointing," he said.

Consistency earns Ranges the win

THE Eastern Ranges have broken their duck for the 2011 TAC Cup season with a 14-point win against the Murray Bushrangers at Craigieburn's Highgate Reserve on Saturday.

The Ranges, well beaten in their previous two matches, made the most of a six-goal second quarter, kicking with a strong breeze, to take a two-goal lead in to half-time.

That lead was down to just eight points at the last break, but a strong final quarter helped the Ranges over the line
