Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

So they require 50,000 units to be sold, how many units are sold with popular games such as FIFA ect... is 50,000 achievable?
FIFA 11 - 2.6million in under a week, over 100 million across the franchise.

AFL games sell 40k-85k , while cricket games (which naturally have a much broader market) sell 650k+ according to the following article: http://www.cnet.com.au/aussie-sports-games-win-lose-or-draw-339297302.htm

If this AFL game is half as good as the people who have played it are saying, then big ant deserve enormous kudos. The way they are approaching it is promising too - they've learnt from the previous developer's errors and developed a good game engine first, and then plan to add the non-essential stuff later. Irgurus could have developed the world's greatest career mode in their franchise but in the end nothing could have saved them from their poor original game engine (no offence to any guys from irgurus - i really had fun with the games but there was just something not quite right in every game)

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

I dropped by to check out the first demonstration down at Chadstone on Saturday, and it's fair to say my: mind = blown, pants = jizzed! :thumbsu: :D

Unfortunately I didn't get to have a chat with Ross, but I had a brief chat with one of the graphic/menu designers from the BigAnt team, who was Scottish/Irish if my memory serves me correct (forgive me as his name evades me). He was an awesome bloke and gave me an in depth run down of the game, and was even nice enough to approach me, as I was watching from afar, and offer to give me an opportunity to play a game.

First off, the menu interface and overall graphics look phenomenal! It's easy to navigate and in terms of the colour scheme, and quality, the menu looks almost as, if not better polished than FIFA.

In my first game I played 4 on 4 co-op with another bloke as Carlton against Hawthorn, and it's fair to say even as an avid FIFA player myself, it took me a little while to get my head around the controls. So naturally me and this other dude ended up getting smashed 40 to 7.

By the second game I started mastering the ruck contests and got the hang of the controls some more, along with the player movements, and ended up soundly winning as the Bulldogs against 2 others playing as the Swans.

The most impressive part about this is that it only took me two games in order to get the hang of the game. Sure, I still needed to get used to other intricracies such as baulking tackles/evade/soccer kick etc., but the fact I was able to become accustomed to the game within 2 games is phenomenal!

One thing that caught my attention the most was how much controllability you're allowed to have at a ruck contest and boundary throw in. As opposed to previous AFL games, contesting the ruck itself now requires a level of skill and timing in order to come away as the winner. More importantly, if you're playing in a co-op game and your teammate is taking control of the ruck, as the rover/ruck-rover you're able to tactically run into position to receive the hitout if your teammate is successful. Brilliant! BIG thumbs up to BigAnt here! :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

The overall pace of the game is fantastic, and I love the fact that it allows you to change the camera to a behind the player view when you're taking a set shot. This is EXACTLY what I had in mind for this aspect of the game. Kudos once more!

The only query I had - and there were close to none mind you - was that I found when I was running towards the ball when it had hit the turf, whilst using sprint I found at times it was hard to turn. Sometimes it refused to let me turn in diagonals, as if only letting me run in a straight line. One instance I overshot my run and went to turn around and retrieve the ball, but it was rather clunky. However, when I took my finger off the sprint button and was running at a normal pace, only then did it allow me to turn in a 360 degree range of motion.

Ross, am I imagining this because i'm subconciously used to the fluid 360 degree range of motion in that of FIFA, or is this part of the game to prohibit the overuse of the sprint when picking up the ball?

Other than that i'd give it a 4/5 at this stage, and can't wait for next month to roll around. :D

@espe

Did you end up going to the eb games play session today and if so did you check up on the evasive moves in the game ie what they are and if in fact they are controlled by the right thumb stick.

If anyone else knows the answer please feel free to answer.

I did go. But it was absolutely packed to the point i couldn't even see the screen. So i basically gave up and did some shopping instead :p

Maybe someone else knows. I'd like to know aswell.

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

Someone else can confirm this but I don't think there are any specific evasive moves other than say a fend off. You do have full 360 control over the player though I guess it would be hard to implement because if you gave people spins and sidesteps etc they might abuse them and turn it into a dancing game.

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

From Trublu twitter:

Play AFL Live this Saturday 19th March at The Gamesmen Penshurst NSW. From 2pm to 4pm.

Looks like the interstaters might get a crack.

Another playtest this time for our Sydney based supporters.

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

lol an hour? Try otherside of the country! I would gladly drive an hour or 3!
If it was an hour away from my house I wouldn't go, but I wouldn't complain

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

I'm an hour away and I'll be going. There won't be many people there. They should have put it out in Western Sydney with GWS and all.
But G Dub aren't in the game. Bit pointless touting it for those who would only want to play as the team they can't even select!

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

I so want a demonstration in Adelaide. I would go wherever it is.

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

Hopefully the Dream Team/Vics are edible.........would be nice to make some worthy All-Australian type changes to them!

I think you mean editable (which I'm 95% sure isn't a word) meaning able to edit as opposed to edible which mean able to eat.

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

Is the play test at Frankston EB true? I can't find a post from Ross about it, but I'm hearing that it's on.

Good thing my post is editable.

Re: EB Games - AFL Live demonstration dates and discussion

I read somewhere on BigFooty that Essendon's clash jumper in the game was an inversion of the home one, red with a black sash. If anyone here saw this, did the clash have the full sponsors on it? Because I have noticed in the videos that the heritage guernseys don't have sponsors so they are not "official" as such, as opposed to club approved. On this, I would assume that if the "clash" has full sponsors then this in fact will be our 2011 clash jumper?
