Roast Ebert

Agree with the last few posts. Especially the posts regarding his work off the ball. Have always admired the way he gut runs both way. More important to our press than a lot of people seem to think.

Collingwood put on show yesterday how good it can be having really fit players gut run both ways. Now don't get me wrong, I do believe Ebert has a lot of room for improvement but he does have a big part in our future.

I also like seeing him going for those marks. He makes a contest, usually a good thing.

When you look at our team and even our tight games its easy to see where the improvements can be made.

These tbh are the players who are borderline due to skills, development or decision making going forward.

Ebert
Mcginnity (mind you i'm becoming a big fan of his as his hardness is just first rate and makes up for most of his deficiencies)
Nicoski
A Selwood

Now ebo is only 21 and is definitely a better player now than he was at the start of the year and definitely a better player than a year before hand as well. I think he's going to quite the maligned player for the next 2-3 years before becoming our version of lingy.

Mcginnity has poor skills but like glass is now playing within himself and all things being positive i think he can eventually develop to a similar level to clint jones from the saints. Really see a lot of similarities between them. (in saying that i see a lot of similarities between mcginnity and dempster and thats not such an endorsement)

Nicoski has had a good year but he's just not a class forward and while i recognise that not every player can be a superstar with our marking forward structure its even more important for us than most teams to have quality crumbing options going forward.

A Selwood is probably 12-18 months away from being overtaken permanently within the team. He isn't as fast as he once was, his tagging isnt quite as good and with introduction of the press and zones its hurting his gamestyle as his decision making isn't great either.

As far as next week goes the only i want ebo in the team is if cox doesn't come up and then the forwards would cycle through more with kennedy playing CHF, darling playing as the deep forward, ebert to take darlings role and lynch to play ruck and around the ground utility.

selwood was never overly quick, certainly no slouch either though. ran off sidebottom in the first or second quarter from memory

Bit hard to perform on a HFF when all the kicks are going to big packs near the boundary line. Ebert's good overhead but he's not Nat Fyfe.

Needs a big game next week.
Shouldn't be in the team next week. Simply not impacting the games enough. McGinnity does/offers more IMO and when spots are tight some-one has to miss out and I think it should be Ebert this week. BTW I am not a detractor of Ebert but he just isn't doing enough to justify his continued selection.

If we had to play Collingwood again, McGinnity as a defensive forward on a Collingwood backman for either Nicoski or Ebert wouldnt be a bad move...

Probably keep Nico as he should be able to kick more goals.

We all have strong views  the match committee obviously disagree with you:)
He is a limited player not fast, kicking skills are not great but what he brings to the TEAM as that is what it is not a group of individuals, gets him a game most weeks.
He plays hard, tough footy good overhead, tackles hard and runs his ass off.
Saying all that he is probably on the edge of being dropped, ive got ginny in front of him:eek:

I hear this a lot about Ebert. Have I been watching a different Ebert? The stats also back up my opinion. Nicoski is the only guy in our forward line who takes less marks on average than Ebert, and only just barely. Darling, Lecras, Kennedy and Lynch are all well ahead of him in that area.

Thats the main problem IMO, Ebert is like the 4th marking target in the forward line. If we played with at least one tall down he would probably be able to use his strength more. He certainly is a good mark over head, not Bartell good but a level below that.

At the moment at any one time we have a resting ruckman, Kennedy and Darling/Lynch in the forward line.

If he is the 4th tall marking forward shouldn't that mean that he should have a 4th string defender and be marking all over him? There's no real point having a 4th tall target if he isn't taking marks. We would be better off with another quick small.

In Ebert's last 17 games there has been only once were he has managed to get over 20 possessions.

He only averages 13.5 Possessions a game & he's not particular damaging with those possesions.

This is a player with pretty much no injuries too.

These are pretty mediocre stat's for someone who does occasionally get runs through the midfield too.

Lets Comapare:

Lecras has had 9 games this year with 15+ possessions(45 Goals).
Lynch has had 15 games this year with 15+ possessions.(27 Goals)
Ebert has had 6 games this year with 15+ possesions (14 Goals)

Rest my case.

How many of those 17 games has he been the sub?

His defensive pressure and taking packs on would be about tenfold of LeCras', but it's not what you would want Le Cras doing, is it? He's playing a team role, whether we like it or not, because he's being selected each week, apart from one.

No point smiths, there will be no swaying some. :)

People need to realise that getting 20 touches on a HFF isn't easy.

Nicoski is averaging 13 touches a game, the same as Hams in 2010.

Strijk average 14.2 last year.

Ebert's 13.6 this year is comparable. What Ebert needs to be doing is hitting the scoreboard a touch more but when you consider Nicoski, Hams and Strijk are a few years older than Ebert it's not the end of the world.

bigQstick, thanks for putting up the numbers of LeCras, a part time mid, a Lynch, who we go through at CHF. Very suitable comparisons
