Ed has now played 15, 16 games for us, and of those his so-called ‘best game’ at the end of 2024, and his rising star game of last season.

But the rest were not memorable. And the same criticisms keep coming up: a lack of intensity, involvement, engagement.

He’s not gonna make it.
It doesn't look good for him.

I'm starting to think he won't make it. It's only the first game so I'll give him some grace. I really thought he would take the next step

Tom Mitchell won a Brownlow. What goes on upstairs trumps the hell out of athletic traits.

I think an Oleg Markov career is about his ceiling.

Poor by foot today. Put him in a line up and he just looks a player, put him on the park and he just doesn't. Must do more this year, still waiting for a breakout game.
I think he's been poor by foot throughout his short career. Even when he has time, he is a below-average quality user.
His pre-season has shown some improvement, so he will get some grace as clearly he is someone the club is hoping will take the next step and fill the void of some of our senior mids.
But I fancy Swadling on a wing as an alternative and Anderson as a better inside mid option offering much more intent and vigour (albeit also shaky with his kicking).

Is there a possibility that Ed is playing a role where he’s instructed not to guess whether to attack or defend, but react? Maybe some guys have a license to try to pre-empt the play and others don’t.

Can’t afford to have everyone running forward at once, nor everyone playing defensively.

Maybe Ed’s speed allows him to play a reactive role?

He’s a midfielder in his 4th season. At some point the excuses run out. As keeps getting highlighted what are his strengths?

He’s tall but it’s not strength as he doesn’t use it. He’s not a line breaker, is a poor user by hand and foot.

So we are left with he can run a lot.

People keep hoping because he’s a “first round” pick rather than just accepting he’s not very good. It happens. He was picked on physical traits, it hasn’t worked out

Time to move into the next 3 potentials in swaddling, prindable and Anderson

I will reserve judgement based on this game. Lots of our usually productive guys didn’t touch it a lot and we played through a few key personnel as much as possible.

Ed did less with his few touches than guys like JDG, McCreery, Long, Sidey, etc so it certainly wasn’t a good game for him.

And that’s fair enough. Myself I look at it as 4 seasons of the same. There’s no “on” switch that’s going to make him a good player. He just lacks it.

Given Macrae and HDM it does make it a hard pill to swallow. Just one coming on and we are in a much better position

Just seems that way because of the first round pick tag. But blokes in that draft range not kicking on is the most likely scenario.

He looks like an Athelete playing Football

Moves well but does not seem to have a Feel of the Game
The good players have taken 2 steps before he's taken 1. Pace isn't going to make that up except when it's a 40+ metre race for the ball.

Have yet to see him react in any way, shape or form

What Premiership Pie?
Love him, but jeez he got lucky. He had a 10 year AFL career, but other than that year, I wonder how many times he played seniors 10 games in a row without getting dropped.

Lucky is a bit harsh imo.

Let's not forget at one stage he was the fastest player in the AFL.

He brought alot to the table and wasn't just recruited for his surname/lineage.

I'm not forgetting that. He got a decade in the AFL because he was an awesome athlete. 23 games in his 5 years at the Tigers. And then cut after 3 years as a GC fringe player in a rally bad time. His running was a weapon but couldn't do much else very well. If given long enough in the industry Ed who is an excellent runner and may be able to bulk up into a huge man might develop and be able to string a year together that's good enough to hold down a senior place in a good team like Oleg did. And if he's really lucky like Oleg was, that year might be a premiership season.
