Eddie Betts Dissapointing

He did come to Darwin with Joey Anderson for at least part of the break. And I can attest to the fact that it is compulsory to drink beer whilst in Darwin.

Surely the club would allow some leeway for those players who had operations that would have prevented doing all the usual work.
As a poster on the previous page said , I'm sure the goals set would have been realistic enough and catered for his op and lack of some exercise . Personally , I'm not bothered by it but the team as a whole does need to be on the same page to achieve the ultimate goal . Parrot put an interesting point of view on it 2 or 3 pages back as well , have a read .

GIBBS.

LMAO !

Not only would Caroline Wilson have more of a clue as to whats going on inside our football club than Westy's_Warriors ....

I'd be willing to bet that she's probably also much better looking.

It's bleeding obvious Eddie has an endurance problem. This may or may not be a rumour but... For someone to have an endurance problem who has been on an AFL list for more that one season let alone as many as he has is shocking.

It's a highly paid job and endurance is something he can definatly improve on. So he doesn't have natural endurance, he could have a lot more than he does.

Endurance is something that takes a long time to get and takes a lot of hard training. For someone who is getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to do a half assed job its a bit ordinary IMO.

I'd love to see him fit. Getting to contests and covering ground is what he must do to help his game and the teams.

I was very dissapointed to hear yesterday that Eddie has come back to pre season training in very poor shape. All players were given skinfold goals to make sure they came back in reasonable shape and Eddie was not even close to the goal set by the Fitness staff. He got a very good serving from Justin Cordy about how dissapointing it was and unacceptable it is.

Players were split into groups of about 4 in each, and if one of the players in that group came back in poor shape they would have to train with the Northern Bullants for a month and do various Boot Camp sessions, and not be allowed to partcipate in the main groups skills session. As Eddie let his group down in now means that Hampson, Anderson and Hadely will also train with the Bullants. Hadely apparently hasn't been guaranteed a contract yet and it will be based on his pre season, so by all reports he is not a happy man at the moment.

Other than Eddie all the players that have come back so far have presented in very good shape, Cameron Cloke really impressed the fitness staff and has reduced his skinfolds to be lower now than what they were towards the end of the season, which is a really good sign with 3 months of pre season training still to go.

With the news out today looks like your thread is the bulls**t of the year post.:thumbsd:

He was a fit as a fiddle and ripping it up before his season came to an end - if you want to bag someone, go onto Collingwood's board and bag Anthony Rocca - living proof that sometims endurance cannot be improved

Rocca never really required it like most big forwards. I'm sure he never did any gut busting running, would have done sprints and heavy gym work a bit like fev would do. Big forwards don't really need a big tank.

Guys, believe me if you want or not but it is absolutely guaranteed that Eddie came back with around 22mls of skinfolds higher than what his targets were set at. I have no need to make things up and couldn't really care less if u think im making it up.

I'm not sure if you are the Peter West who used to do a bit of work down at Carlton. But let me tell you Eddie is looking like he hasnt been starved of turtle meat over the break. You are spot on with what you have said and let me tell ya, Eddie has a bit of work to do over summer to get back to being the speedy little goal sneak rather than the blob of churd he looks like now!!!

gee batman - have you ever done anything athletic in your life LOL. Do you know what gut busting running is - repeated sprinting (you know those things u said Rocca would have 'only' done)

Just take it from me that it is a known fact that Rocca is living proof that not everyone is capable of elite aerobic fitness. Collingwood would have loved young Rocca to be capable of having a run on the ball but he could never really do it at senior level.

PS Somebody had better tell that Franklin character to reduce his tank size.

Genuinely hope he's delisted at the end of the year.
Genuinely hope he does something to turn that around this season.

This will be his 5th year in the system. Can't wait forever for him to suddenly flick the switch and say he wants to do this at the highest level.

London - Is that where you are based and thus did not see Eddie's good season?

I'm really struggling to think of a standout game he had. The first game against Essendon actually would be of a very decent standard.

Don't think anything came close to that though.

More consistent performers waiting for their chance.

Eddie would be one of the first picked each week and capable of getting a game at nearly any club.
Not sure what you mean by standout - I don't expect FP to be BOG.
He averaged 1.4gl/match (check the av.'s of FP's and u will find this is good)
Averaging 2 tackles and 13 possies (half contested) was a solid return in my book and the forward line did not function nearly as well without him

Who is your consistent, goal-kicking, crumbing forward that I should look out for next season?

Thing is though - those averages have remained stagnant since he's arrived at the club. He was effectively getting those type of stats since his first year. No real improvement either way.

I'd have Wiggins and Russell ahead of him any day, as at least you get 4 quarters out of them, as well as a week of appropriate preparation in advance. Hell, I'd rather see what Joseph or Ellard have to offer if Betts isn't prepared to commit himself to a pre-season off the grog and the bong.

I still think the stats are ok and a lot better than the likes of neon Leon in his early days - so we will have to beg to differ on them

Wiggins and Russell do not play Eddie's small pocket role and JR really cant kick a goal. As for Joseph and Ellard - they will have to push him out of the team

Our semi-professional heroes of the past mucked up all year - if nowadays a kid cant go half a step off the straight and narrow during his holiday break (and be prepared to make up for it - they know they have no choice) then they will all take up NRL ;)

lol, yeah I'v done plenty and played plenty of footy. Lets just say I am glad my club doesn't do skin fold tests! I've Already put on a few kilos since the end of footy! Spending too much time on BogFooty :p. Buddy needs a handy cap!

Even Houlihan is another option. Walker too to an extent.

I don't think the stats aren't bad, they stack up quite well, as you say, to his peers. I just don't believe the input provided is that crucial to Carlton winning a game of footy, nor has the input increased significantly over the past 5 years.

Fev improved his output significantly this year, with the arrival of Judd/return of Stevens/winning games relatively consistently. Betts didn't take a similiar step up in terms of what he was bringing to the table. It's still very much what we've seen the last 4 seasons.
