Following on from the BigFooty poll, what are people's opinions on Eddie McGuire's multiple roles (chins) in the media and AFL?

It's been all his own, hard work getting to where he is, starting as a reporter for Ten. Good luck to him. Ron Casey had multiple roles in the media and VFL, didn't he?

ALf...this is an Eddie thing NOT a Collingwood thing!

There is a difference!! Remember...not may people liked Eddie before he was the Collingwood President.

Now that he is...Collingwood supporters automatically think than an attack on Eddie is an attack on the Collingwood Football Club.

Yes...I admit that some intend it to be taken that way, but remember, you are defending a bloke who has the uncanny ability to 'change hats' on a whim.

So therefore...an attack on Eddie the journalist cannot be construed as an attack on your club. If you say that it is...you are pretty much saying a conflict of interest does exist.

Let me explain. Eddie has been strong in keeping his journalistic and presidential commitments separate. As he should. Therefore, he is open to critism as a journalist or the President of the Collingwood Football Club. By saying that a general attack on Eddie is an attack on Collingwood says to me that these roles are infact NOT separate....therefore a conflict of interest.

If McGuire were to mix both roles...he would find himself having to relinquish one of those positions.

mate, why do people bag him?? i never see any threads on here bagging any other journo's.. well there is the odd occasion, but not half as many as Ed...

that is not the reason he is being bagged on this site!!! he is bagged becos he is the collingwood president... thats the reason, dont tell me it isnt, becos we all know it is....

Well, of course Eddie is biased. Just like any other journalist. For example, Andrew Bolt of the Herald Sun has a pathological bias in favour of the Liberal Party. Is this a CONFLICT OF INTEREST too?

Is this about Eddie's ability to influence the outcome of a football match?
Does Eddie influence the outcome of a football match because he goes on TV and expresses his love for Collingwood?
Are you saying Eddie is in a position to influence the outcome?
Really?

To go back to the Andrew Bolt example, I would suggest that Andrew Bolt is in a stronger position to influence the outcome of an election than Eddie McGuire is in to influence the outcome of a football match.

Since the notion that Eddie can influence the outcome of a football match is plainly ludicrous, I assume the issue at stake is more to do with Eddie's ability to influence public opinion.

But TopDon, as a BigFooty poster, is also in a position to influence public opinion. It's only a matter of degree.

So put up, Donnie. Or shut up.

Because this CONFLICT OF INTEREST bollocks has got great hairy knobs on it.

Hate to blow this Eddie bashing post apart but there are TONS more people in football that have a *perceived* conflict of interest. Why does Eddie attract ALL the attention? Because he's Collingwood President that's why. How bout leaving Ed alone for 5 mins and worrying about your own team..

I don't have any particular bias against Eddie or Collingwood. I'm going to try to place my opinion in perspective. For starters, your comparison between myself as an Essendon supporter and impartial BigFooty poster, to Eddie McGuire the journalist and Collingwood President.

For starters...if you wanted to make a fair comparison, I'd have to be a BigFooty Moderator ontop of being an Essendon supporter. If I didn't like your posts...I'd delete them (if I were that way inclined). If I were to mix both roles...I would have to take critism as an Essendon supporter and not delete posts that 'I don't like' written by people 'I don't like'.

Now with Edward. Thus far, he has managed to keep both roles separate (helped by the fact that Channel 9 haven't had the TV rights). However, he was quick to jump on the "discontent down at Melbourne (re: Joseph Gutnick)", reporting this issue "as a journalist". This is fair enough. However, what if the same thing were happening at Collingwood. Would he be silenced by his own board? Muzzled? Wouldn't this affect Eddie's credibility as a "journalist". And, if by some miracle, he were to discuss the "rumblings down at Jock McHale"...wouldn't that effect his credibility as a journalist?

Do you see where I am heading?

Being an Essendon supporter and BigFooty poster, I have no effect on the posts that appear or do not appear on these boards. If I were a moderator...and I didn't want anyone to know AlfAndrew's opinion...I'd block his posts, his IP, etc. The way in which this analogy works...if something is going down at Collingwood...do you think he would tell anyone. He would only get on the defensive if troubles were leaked to the media...like all and sundry knew that I was purposely blocking everyone from reading your rather insightful comments. :D

And Afl...i'd never forget the red + black pompoms ;)
 
If there were rumblings of discontent at Pie Land Eddie may well choose not to reveal them. But I'm sure if Sam got a sniff of the story he'd let us all know about it!!!

Being a journalist (or a BigFooty poster, for that matter) does not bind you to a duty to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Journalism is not as noble a profession as you seem to think it is. I'm sure if it was suddenly revealed (speaking hypothetically of course) that our Prime Minister was a paedophile, I don't think Andrew Bolt would be falling over himself to "break" the story. Journalists will always report whatever suits them whenever it suits them ... subject, of course, to defamation laws.

Now, OK. If Eddie chooses to hush-hush some story of discontent at Collingwood for fearing of causing damage to The Club one could well say, "Poor show, old chap. That's jolly bad journalism." But that just makes him a bad journalist. Or, more to the point, a typical journalist.

NOBODY tells the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Absolutely nobody. I certainly don't. And I'm sure you don't either, TopDon. There are just too many things that we, as human beings, do not want other human beings to know. For all sorts of reasons.

If you want to cast doubts on the quality of Eddie McGuire's journalism, then fair enough. It's your opinion and you're entitled to it, regardless of the colour of the pom-pom on your non-biased hat.

But this rather emotive term "CONFLICT OF INTEREST" seems to carry a lot of baggage with it. It has come to mean something very sinister when it really isn't.

The fact that people are not 100% honest 100% of the time, and that a person's allegiances in one area of their life will affect their behaviour in other areas of their life is really no more than basic human nature. It should not come as any surprise to us. And it should not provoke baggage-laden howls of moral indignation.

So, does this mean I'm "admitting" that Eddie has a CONFLICT OF INTEREST?

Yeah. Probably.

But then I would add to that ... so bloody what?

We ALL have a CONFLICT OF INTEREST. It's part of the human condition.

I think that's probably all I've got to say on this. For now, anyway.
 
You're right "Conflict of Interest" is rather emotive language.

I do see where you are coming from and some feel the need to bag both Eddie and Collingwood.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Just wanted to let you know my take on things, and it's interesting to hear yours. He is doing great things for you club, and that's all that really matters. :)

Your getting it wrong. There's a percieved conflict of interest with Eddie because he is the president of a football club. Nearly all football journalists have their favourite team but most of them arn't presidents of a football club.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm going back a year or two, but wasnt there a bloke who had something to do with a club that wears red and black, then moved onto the AFL whilst remaining involved with a company that had some kind of arrangement wih the AFL to provide services (food?) at Colonial or the MCG? I think its a scenario they could use now at Harvard BS to give an example of 'conflict of interest'. Makes you think about the difference between perception and reality.

Boy, I wouldnt mind a quid for every time the magic COI phrase has been posted on footy board the last year or so.
 
I don't think there is much doubt Eddie does have a potential conflict of interest in been a journalist who at the same time has access to information no one else would have thanks to his role as Collingwood president.

HOWEVER, a conflict of interest is only a problem if Eddie uses it to his advantage. For example, the AFL giving Spotless Catering the rights to cater at Colonial, when Graham Samuel is on the AFL and Spotless Boards, now that's a blatent example of a conflict of interest.

Eddie on the other hand is yet to really use his position incorrectly. Yes, he did report on the Melbourne board, but only if he found out because he is Collingwood president, and not because he is a journalist is it a conflict of interest.

But the thing is he is treading on very thin ice. Everyone got stuck into Dermie for sticking up for Croad, but of course he's going to, he's on the Hawthorn board. Eddie is always going to be biased towards Collingwood in his reporting, just like Steve Quartermain is biased towards Hawthorn, Rohan Connolley towards Essendon and UDC towards Richmond.

It's only when Eddie starts taking advantage of his position as Collingwood president when acting as a journalist that he will get into real trouble. I mean, if he says one day "apparently St. Kilda have asked the league for $2 million" and Sam asks "where did you hear that?" and Eddie replies "The AFL president's meeting I was at today" then he would be stuffed.

So far I haven't seen any evidence of this, but it's something Eddie will have to be very careful of, particularly next year with the added exposure of the TV rights.

PS. Andrew Bolt is the biggest right-wing fascist moron ever to be called a "journalist".
 
...give me Andrew Bolt before that red flagger Jill Singer any day. The only good red is a dead red. Put them on the back of a tractor and drag them around. Give them a taste of their own medicine.
