Is it my imagination that there seems to be pattern that if Edwards is used up forward then John.... will be down back - and vice versa??

I don't recall many games [if any] where they seem to be at the same end of the ground for an appreciable amount of time?

Where do people think that they best serve the team structure?

Probably because you need one of them (or someone of that type) in the backline.
