EFC Oppostion Spud Coversion Rate: Mythical?

Jones will become a dead-eye dick just for out benefit. Just you see.

Players that normally can't kick straight over a jam tim.. until they play us are:

Kurt tippet - Jeff Garlett - Travis Cloke - Tom Hawkins - Sam Reid

(lucky Lindsay Thomas has a proper case of the yips, even playing us can't help him)

Prepare to add Jones to this list?

Richo and Sumich were past players who had the radar against us only.

We sound like whingers, but out of form (or plain poor) players turn it on against us. I suppose we should be used to it. I don't know a lot about the Dogs, but I don't think they have a lot of depth and already have a bunch of kids in their team. No excuses this week. Will Minson come back in? (Pun unintended).

Can't kick over a jam tin??? Travis Cloke is one of the biggest kicks in the AFL, all year round, I'm not sure you'd put him or Hawkins or Reid in the can't kick over a jam tin category?

The statement was qualified...

'STRAIGHT over a jam tin'

The myth grows and grows. Can't believe so many people on our board buy into this rubbish.

Out of all the players listed the only one you could make a case for is Tippett. He had that one day out where he couldn't miss but on that day players from both teams were kicking them from everywhere.

Thomas and Reid last year.

What do you say? That average players or players in a slump have to come good eventually, and it just happened to be against us?

Look, these are just comments based on observations of opposition player performances over a period of time. Facts are that no-names and hacks, or good players in slumps sometimes turn it on against our boys. No one said it happens every time.

Kongy, can you move this discussion to another thread? I don't want to derail this one.

The "EFC is an opposition spud converter" discussion?

Call it what you like.

Of the players listed -

Hawkins - has never done anything against us
Richo - average against us is down on career average
Sumich - see above
Reid - averages just over a goal a game against us.
Cloke - up and down same as against any other team.
Garlett - see above

Reid couldn't miss against us last year at Etihad and there's been other instances. Don't know about hard facts, but it certainly feels like it.

Eventually one of the bottom 6 - 8 players in an opposition side is going to play a good game. 6 - 8 players, 22 rounds, that's 132 - 176 opportunities for a spud to turn it on against us every season so it's only fair to think 3 or 4 will do so.

And it isn't just us, it happens against every club.

Now if said spud does it repeatedly against us then that's another story.

Sometimes it feels like the entire team we are playing has a field day when it comes to goal kicking, ie:
freo up until 3 qtr time. Though they werent particularly hard shots they had.

But I tell you now they have been more spuds to have a day out against us than any other team just to name a few,

Kent Kingsley
Scott Welsh
Nick Gill
Mark McGough
Steven Jurica
Port Adelaide

Hey it goes both ways, the amount of players I've seen come to Subi and suddenly find their radar is incredible. Taylor Walker couldn't miss against us. Hurley last week. I know Hurley is a decent kick but he's hardly been a dead eye dick this year. Saturday night? Couldn't miss!

Whenever Cloke had the hard core yips he would be potting them from 50 on the boundry against us - it may be big game mentality... maybe he is just better from outside 50. Some are better when they have to kick through it, like Crameri, like Hille.

Not calling buddy a spud either but who wouldnt say he dosent relish playing agaisnt us... he grows an extra leg!

Its obvious that some players play better against certain teams. In much the same way some teams 'allow' spuds to get under their guard. Thornton is the lassic example.. how that sh*t truck can constantly come from the 2's into the ones and take contested marks and kick goals on us is unfathomable.
