My advice to young people is do not listen to either party, they are full of scare campaigns such as the one with Howard and interest rates. My advice to look at the history of politics and you will see that both Liberal and Labor have given us high interest rates. After all, Howard is the worst treasurer in history who gave us rates of 22%.

Amen.

Personally I will vote for a minor party (still haven't decided which one) but will give my 2pp preference to Labor, as I will never forgive Howard for putting us in breach of our international obligations by entering into non-UN sanctioned conflict with another state over WMDs that were never there. Plus all the other bullshit lies he's fed us. I recognise Labor are probably just as bad but they haven't had the opportunity to feed us as many bullshit lies yet.

But that's just me.

I turned 18 this year and get to vote for the 1st time. If anyone knows anything about economics and the economy they would vote for the Libs. Rudd just seems to be fake. Though if Labor gets in i'll laugh at everyone who voted for them when the interest rates go over 10% and they all start to cry. They will try and blaim the government but in hind sight they can only blaim themselves. I say play it safe and vote the Liberals.

Despite the fact that's bollocks there are more important things in life than interest rates *cough* environment, education *cough*

I was effected by Workchoices. Where I work, I lost my overtime rates from double time on a Saturday to time and a quarter. We also lost our bonuses that the company offered which improved productivity from 15,000 units to 23,000 units and after putting in the hard yards, they took it away from us.

Now, they have banned overtime, some of us guys who have been with the company for many years, are now put onto menial tasks and demoting us in the hope we resign in anger, which they now are replacing us with casuals for less pay and no overtime rates. So far since that started that tactic, a dozen people have resigned and been replaced with low paid casuals.

Just before workchoices, I was bringing home (after tax) anywhere between $850.00 - $1000.00 a week to now which is about $550.00 a week.

I have 7 kids, I see them unable to buy their own home because of affordability, I see them having hell in getting a decent paying job with the my way or the highway attitude of companies such as mine.

I voted for Howard last time because Latham just scared me, but Howard will not get my vote this time. I am sick of his fear campaigns, his deceit and contempt for parliament and the Australian people.

Interest rates will not go through the roof as Howard is saying. He is riding on the reforms of the last ALP government who opened up the country to the world in trade, which helped revive the country after the mess that Fraser and Howard left the country in. After all, I am old enough to remember the high interest rates, the high unemployment which Howard as treasurer left when in government.

Fair enough. I think personal experience will determine how the majority of people will vote. Predictably, Labor have run sob stories about Workchoices, and the Liberals have run scare campaigns about Unions and 'Look at the economy - our policies inc. Workchoices caused that', but I'd hope that the people of Australia are smart enough to see through all that rubbish.

I'm more concerned about interest rates with regards to housing affordability than I am about the economy as a whole, personally. WA isn't going to go into a recession any time soon, the resources sector and world energy/materials prices are driving the state and will continue to do so. I'm not convinced the ALP will turn 7% back into 17% overnight, or that the libs well get them below 7% and keep them there.

Low interest rates 5 years ago were great. They have gone up but are still pretty good in historical terms. 5 years ago you could buy a 4 x 2 in an average suburb for 250k. Today you'd be lucky to get the same for under 450k.

250k at 7% over 30 years is $382 a week. That's relatively affordable. A whole percentage point increase makes it $422. Another percentage point makes it $462. That's still reasonable for many individuals and families, even after 8 0.25% rate increases (they usually go up by 0.25 or 0.5%).

450k at 7% over 30 years is $688 a week. You have to earn $45,000 a year just to meet those repayments after tax, let alone eating, feeding a family, running a car etc. 8% is $759 a week (50k). 9% is $832 a week (56k). I don't know about most people, but I don't have a spare $800 each week.

Other than the State Govt dropping stamp duty on houses under 500k (after they took the cream off the top of record sales during the housing boom) and the first homebuyers grant, there isn't a whole lot being done to genuinely make housing more affordable to average Australians, which is disappointing. Given all the piss and wind about interest rates, the economy and and how Workchoices/Unions will leave you better/worse off, some decent policies about housing affordablity would be good a vote winner IMO.

Libs here....I loathe unions, and Rudd the ear-wax eating weasel is not prime minister material. Gillard is a joke.

Libs for me. Things are going well so why change? Need experienced safe hands in people you know and what they stand for not the smug Rudd. A vote for Labor is a vote for the return of union thugs and bullies because they control Labor. Shudder to imagine Gillard as a minister Garrett having an important role. Labor are soft on illegal immigration. Only have to look at the very poor decisions and stuff ups by Labor state governments especially here in WA and having Labor governments Australia wide just will mean more of the same even worse with no control. Labor don't know how to control the economy, they are irresponsible in that aspect and in these times we need people who know how it works and have done it well. It will be a mess with Labor if they gain power and they will stuff it up once again after the Libs have just sorted out their mess the last time they were in. The Libs have held up their end of the mantle over the years well and if Labor get in that good work will be gone and it's not so easy to turn things back. Don't fall for Labor's gimmicks and don't gamble with the future of our great country, it's not worth it.

Been working for the Coalition for a while, have we?

For those actually interested for reasons on who to vote this election, head here:http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=229

A fair bit of crap to wade through but at least it'll give you much better understanding of both parties and you'll probably learn a lot more things than you already know. Like Howard being the worst treasurer in Australia's history pre-Hawke and Keating governments. So much for economic credibility

Anyway, you DO realise it took about 8-9 years for Hawke and Keating to fix up the mess Howard left the country in after his time as treasurer? 22% I believe it was when he handed it over, get your facts right. The Libs are riding on the mining boom and Keating's workplace reforms and economic policy and claiming it as their own, which it isn't. All of Keating's hard work being undone by Howard, after he'd spent 13 years fixing up the mess in the first place.

I was defiantly (and probably still will) going to go for Howard/Liberals because of the economy but the whole thing is stupid, I dont like the way the Liberals are going about the environment/education while there are many policies I dont like about Labor. That's why I'm hoping (and voting) the Greens into the Senate.:thumbsu: No I'm not a Greeny either, as long as the economy isn't affected too much, I prefer to see the environment actually been cared for more (greenhouse emissions need to be cut).

Anyway enough with it all. Just want to get it out of the way but there is no way Im doing a donkey vote, waste of time and they only go the the party that's leading.

Why? Do you own a business? were you made to pay your workers the right amount of money?

there are some stupid unions but there are also some really good ones too

No offence, but I'd be surprised if you know much about economics when you can't even spell the word "blame".

Ha ha... also if you knew anything about economics, you 'd know that interest rates are largely determined by world economics. The liberal party ads are totally misleading for anyone who doesn't understand the factors that affect interest rates. When they were high during the labor years, they were just as high worldwide. Roll on Saturday!!

Greens in the senate, Labor in the HOR. Dislike the lib's born to rule mentality immensly, as well as the vote buying excersize which has made an absolute matrix of the tax system. I don't think Labor will actually wind this back, but I can always live in hope.

I will vote Libs i dont mind Rudd but the rest of his crew Swan,Gillard etc scare the shit out of me.and dont even get me started on the little prick Carpenter what a dog he has become :-)

Labor & Greens all the way!

I'd be voting for them anyway, but...

Costello as a prime minster?! That guy is a souless ****** ******* **** ******* *** ******! :thumbsd:
