FWIW my interpretation of "Elite" is a top 16 player (room for 1 per club on average). Someone who you could build a team around, not someone who is having an improved season.

I hate how the media has turned average footballer with potential in to verging on elite or A graders etc. Being an A grader now means you are in the top 500!

Cotchin has only played a handful of games, it would be like us saying that Zaharakis is elite (or on the verge of).
 
i think that the term elite tends to be thrown around to describe someones value to a team.

there are a lot of players that are valuable to a team and play a role that the team really needs them to play, but they are not elite, regardless of how well they fill that role.

these players will often get called elite, which should probably be reserved for the top bracket (however many that allows) in the competition.

i guess though some would argue that to make an AFL list you would have to be elite, as so many people play the game around the country, and relatively few make the top flight.
i think this argument shows that elite is a relative term that can only be applied when you are comaparing to others in the same ballpark as you.
