I've got uncut version of Blues Bros and the full version of the John Lee Hooker track kicks arse.

That version of Boom Boom is great isnt it?

It's certainly a lot more upbeat than his original version. I wonder if he did it in a studio or just sat out on the street with a mic in front of him? The romantic in me really wants it to just be out on the street, but the sensible person in me says it must be a studio recording.

Most of the books I have read about him say he was killed by poisoned whisky by a jealous husband.
From memory that was part of the deal - selling your soul meant an early death.

This is the guitar off from the Crossroads movie. Both parts are Steve Vai. I personally think it's a load of waank but some people like this stuff.

Yes I'm familar with his work Mantis.I was just expressing shock at coming across a real live disciple.

While i don't agree with 'And Smiths' premise about the whole popularity as the final trump card .To be fair to him it's a bit rich to be pulling rank on musical 'cred' if you haven't even heard of Robert Johnson.

It's ok i'm not insecure about my music knowledge :D

Granted it mostly revolves around Punk,Ska and the 60's,70 + 80's there's still alot of stuff iv'e yet to learn.

Though i'm only half way through cataloguing my 3500+ record collection so i'm sure i'll learn a bit more by the end of it. :thumbsu:

Robert Johnson should be the starting off point for anyone who wants to claim any sort of knowledge or authority on modern music.

Sweet Home Chicago and Love In Vain are classics.

Agreed, though the strange part about his legacy is that there's so much mythology surrounding him.

In truth alot isn't known about his career/life and during his time he wasn't that well known.

It's more today with modern artists citing their influence of his material that his work has come to prominance.

Here's a badly dressed asian guy doing the guitar part to Cream's version of Johnson's Crossroads.

Enough of that crap rock that bogans and old people listen to. He's something a bit more hip and cool:

Not.

Keep on keepin it real cats56...

btw the next new thread is on you. ;)

Are you actually going to contribute to your own thread, or just keep blowing sunshine up Cat's arse and it's poorly thought out arguments?

You and Mantis also need to stop relying on the myth that because music is popular, it isn't quality.

A whole lot of assumptions being made in this thread. Not the least of which is that popularity equals loss of credibility. You can be extremely talented, fantastic vocalist with range and emotion but you need to be a good entertainer in order to get your music out there as much as possible. Some seem to focus on the good entertainer part in assuming artists like Elvis were less credible in tangible musical areas.

Most people around the globe didn't get to even see Elvis in his heyday and he didn't leave the states aside from Germany. Yet, he had universal appeal. Why? Did people need to see Elvis wiggling his hips and curling his lips to enjoy his music, to shed a tear at one of his ballads? No. His songs were his primary appeal, the rest just put him over big time.

You can point to pop artists like Kylie all you want but I ask you if Kylie's music will stand the test of time? How much early Spice Girls stuff do you hear these days? Not a lot. This is a prime example of popularity vs credibility.

Elvis has stood the test of time and he has done it while being dead for almost 30 years. Pretty hard to tour and showcase your stuff under those circumstances. Sure his estate has milked it for all it was worth but you don't do it for so long without a quality product.

There is a lot of personal preference in this thread being stated as fact and much of it pretty insulting. Also a lot of attacking of posters intellience. The last bastion of the desperate when the argument doesn't stand up all by itself.

.

.......... based on your opinion like it's important or relevant. I've not heard of Robert Johnson and i listen to all kinds of different music.

Me thinks a lot of you Elvis bashers on here have seen Walk The Line in the last year.
I enjoy listening to Johnny Cash, he was a great songwriter but with an ordinary voice IMO. You are doing him a disservice by comparing him with "The King"

Some of the crap on this thread has been unbelievable. John Lennon once said "Before Elvis, there was nothing." But then some of you numbskulls probably wouldn't rate John Lennon either.

Did you actually read any of the posts? If you had you would have read that i've been listening to Johnny Cash for 40 years and havn't seen the movie. Nicky hasn't seen the movie. If you can't post with any credence don't bother posting at all.

Quite frankly I couldn't give a rat's how long you have been listening to Johnny Cash. You said Elvis was garbage and was not a musical artist by any stretch. Any person with any credibility, whether they are a fan or not, would not doubt his talent and his influence on the artists that came after him. Yes I read your posts and they sounded like they were coming from a Johnny Cash fan who is biased.
By the way, YOU saying my posts don't have any credence is actually a compliment to me, so insult away.

LOL :D You're getting a little trigger happy with YouTube though, much like rJ.

Should see my almum collection, even Rick James was was impressed, when I move, the biggest things are my vinyl albums, being from a musical family I have albums from the 50's, I have to catalogue them, so I know where to find an album someone wants to listen to.
THE Rick James? ;)

quality not quantity lovie. Grace is an album that has soothed my sould for over 11 years. I have listened to it more times than all of albans work put together and then some. Anyone can keep producing mediocer music, look at madonna, oasis, pearl jam, u2. Doesn't mean their music continues to be any good.
Grace is a good album, you're probably overrating it because of the emotional attachment you have to it, but still a good album.

As for the quality over quantity thing, that would apply more to the Beatles who made records for 7 years, all quality; not someone who made one album -the sophomore slump, selling out, etc could have happened to Buckley. So if you're going to judge an artist on one album, you may as well pick the best album of U2, Pearl Jam etc. and use that as a snapshot of their career.
