Hi guys,

As I wrote a few days ago I was looking into how to get a hold of the Grand Final logo's used on the players jumpers on game day.

I have spoken to a few aussie companies that make these sort of things and most have said due to it being a licensed product they wont go near it.

One company has come back and said the same thing but said if the license holder approved it then they could make them for about $50 and it would take 3 to 4 days.

So my question is, how exactly would I go about contacting the AFL. I have checked the AFL site and had no luck with an email address or even phone number to talk to someone about it.

Anyone have any idea of how to get in contact with someone who could help.

Cheers.

There are three different types of Licensee
- Production of licensed products for retail sales
- Sales promotions
- Official supplier

I will break it down for you.
The AFL want a minimum $100,000 for an official license.
(It's actually 75% of 15% of the forecast sales, but let's say you're starting small, so $100k is the entry level.) You pay 15% of your wholesale sales to the AFL as a royalty each year.
Now this belongs to a company, so you can use as many products as you like under the one license.
It gets paid before you get access to their IP in any print ready sort of format
However, you have to go through their Licensing Dept as they try not to have too many companies supplying the same thing.
You have to give them a business plan of the product, an idea of how long you want the license for and then it gets reviewed once you've actually started doing business. At any time they can walk away and give you your $100k back. But that means you don't have a License.

You are required to report each month on what you sold and the wholesale value of what you sold.
You owe the AFL 15% of whatever that is, though the good news is, the first $100k is already paid because they take that off what you owe them.

Without the $100k for the license they will not allow you to create anything they own in any format.

That's a joke, if you're not gonna sell it and only want it for one jumper (which already has the AFL logo on it) you have to fork out $100k?

Err yup.

Or, take the course they would prefer, don't do it yourself, and try to find it from someone who is licensed.

And the other option is to source it from a manufacturer in a country that has little understanding or regard for Australian Intellectual Property laws.
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/236777563/vivid_iron_on_patch.html for example.

Disclaimer: This should not be taken as a reference or direction, or anything other than pointing out that it is possible to source products easily to make replica AFL IP very cheaply.
www.alibaba.com you can basically find some company somewhere who will make anything you can think of.
