I Kanye west revived it when he started gaining popularity. Sure he might not be as technically a skilled rapper as the greats, but at least the kind of music that got college dropout and late registration going (through the wire, All falls down, Jesus walks, gold digger to a lesser degree, heard em say, touch the sky, diamonds) were creative and a breath of fresh air from the bullshit that 50 cent personified at that time.

Completely agree - I always thinks it does a real disservice when Kanye gets thrown in the same group as 50 and the like... Kanye is making significantly better music than that.

As you say, he's not amongst the greats as a rapper, but as a producer he's as good as anyone there is, and his music stands up and sets trends, rather than following them.

I disagree with your argument based on the artists that you have mentioned. Sure, people that really understand the genre are going to know those artists and appreciate that they have lots of talent and also produce solid work that delivers to any knowledgeable fan. Hiphop that isn't aimed to sell at the top of the commercial charts will always put out quality albums. Always. It has always produced consistently throughout the genre's history. I think what people are referring to when they say 'hiphop is dead' or 'hiphop is turning to shit', is the hiphop selling at the top of the charts, because otherwise hiphop always has produced quality - you just have to find it. The hiphop songs on the commercial charts is where the quality has fluctuated throughout the years.

For 3-4 years we have to put up with rap/hip hop turning to absolute shit. Then all of sudden eminem comes out of no were and gives you songs such as, Relapse (some of it), Beautiful, Drop The World, Forever, Airplanes 2 & Recovery. + He has more songs coming up with T.I, Kanye, Dre & Scott Stortch & Raekwon. This guy has single handedly revived rap in the last 2 years. How could you not respect this guy?
