Help Emojis changing to ?

So I noticed in my pm to Allikat a few days ago that a laugh emoji in response to her comment had turned into ? (Sorry Alli I would never be rude to you) and after looking around a bit I found the same issue with a few emoji posts.
I pm’d Muddiemoose last night coz I noticed he had ?? under his name and obviously it was the same issue...he thought it happened after an update. Muddie, do you wanna tell Chief which update you think it was?

I’m not sure of the exact update but I definitely noticed it over the weekend and last last week that the emojis I had in my sig had turned into question marks

No idea, whatever you updated recently? I only noticed my emojis yesterday. Others have obviously noticed it before then.

We migrated databases late last week. The vendor failed to advise that if the database transfer isn't done in a certain way then emojis are corrupted. Fortunately, we have a copy of our database prior to cutover so can restore all historical content containing emojis. Restoration should be completed sometime between now and tomorrow morning. At which point the question marks should turn back into the proper emojis.

Looks like they are, but the whole site is out of whack now lol. Days of posts missing, and posts out of whack in middle. Unstickied posts have been re-stickied too. Seems to be site wide.

The restore seems to have upset the forum/thread indexes and counters. These are being rebuilt right now which should put everything back into the right order. Will see how things look in next hour or so.

Why do I keep getting this when I use the embarrassed emoji?



Only happens on chrome on a mac. Mobile and other browsers are fine. Have cleared cache and all the other nerd fixes etc and still happening.

Please help, this is like 75% of my go-to posts ffs

...

The best I can find is that 2 years ago a MacOs/OSX user had problems with an emoji using chrome, but I'm otherwise unable to find any known bugs around that combination, sorry.

Can you advise whether this is a new issue? When did it start being a problem? Are there any other emojis that aren't displaying properly?

It also seems like you can see it properly but not create one yourself? Are you doing it by typing in <colon>embarrassed<colon> ?

Not just for mine either - all look the same, regardless of who posted it.

All emojis look broken to you? This is starting to point at your Chrome/OSX combination quite specifically rather than anything on our server side. *sad face* I'll keep trying to find if there's any known issues that can be fixed. Sorry that this is affecting you.

Just the embarrassed emoji for some reason. This is what it looks like for me (when I use it or when others use it). No biggie though I'll survive....

I was just walking past and read this thread.

Hadn't noticed it before now but I get this same issue as well, Chrome on Android 11.
On Windows it works fine in Firefox but get the same problem on Chrome

The thinking one works and comes from https://images.bigfootymedia.com/smilies/thinking.png

If I change the embrassed one to come from https://images.bigfootymedia.com/smilies/embarrassed.gif it seems to load properly

A lot of the other ones are all fancy and have the source like 'data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7' which all work as well.
