How do you rate him. He is obviously a brilliant guitarist. However he has done to many covers and not enough original songwriting for me to praise him like i would for a Dylan or McCartney. Layla will probably be a classic for another 100 years and Tears in Heaven is probably my favourite song. I love his Cream word aswell. How do you rate what he has done over the last couple decades.

What do Eric Clapton and coffee have in common?

They're both rubbish without Cream

Lame joke, but it's true.

he's an excellent musician but some of his song writing is a bit erratic, so yeah i'd agree with your post.

slowhand is an excellent album - one of my favourites.

cream are one of the most original bands of the 60's IMO.

Actually I prefer them both without cream. His Unplugged album is one of my favourites of all time.

Thats a bit harsh. Surely you agree that Tears in Heaven is a beautiful song. Clapton even said that he hates writing lyrics whilst under pressure. His Autobiography is a excellent read for anybody interested.

Not enough original songwriting and too many covers? So what. I find this argument as to a persons place in music a touch odd to be honest. Historically songwriters wrote songs and singers sung them. The singer/songwriter as mainstream is a fairly recent phenomenon. If Sinatra had a career based on what he wrote he would not have had a career.

As to Clapton for all the highlights, he does generally leave me cold somewhat and I am not that impressed with his recent work.

The guy was so good, so early that the only way for him was down. Honestly, I don't think any of his albums since 461 Ocean Boulevard are remotely listenable (exceptions being From the Cradle and the Robert Johnson covers album of a couple of years back)

Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs is top 5 of all-time stuff.

The only thing that brings it down a notch is the god-awful acoustic version of 'Layla' (which wasn't on the album, I know). How can someone turn one of the most powerful songs of all time into one of the most yawn-inducing???

Having said that - this time last year I was seeing him in concert and it rocked.

When i first heard that i felt physically ill. It's so bad.

Compare a Dylan and McCartney who have so much great original work, they make Clapton look very small. I'm not taking anything away from him, its just that i dont think he compares to Dylan or McCartney. Then again McCartney had some really bad stuff aswell.

Very good in his early days. Seems to have faded though as all greats do.

Faded in his originality and importance - but his power still remains. Although, having a kickass band behind him (including the incredible Derek Trucks) helped make his 2007 tour pretty darn memorable.

(The fact that he structured his setlists around predominantly Derek & the Dominos songs didn't hurt one bit!)
