Currently our young ruckmen are Pattison, Graham, Putt and Cartledge. We will most likely pick up another young ruckman early in this draft so why do we need to get another 20-odd gamer at the cost of at least one precious draft pick?

Same with Kerr, we do not want to give up any draft picks. Example: Carlton picked up Judd and gave away two first round draft picks. Personally, I would rather Masten and the number 19 or so pick than Judd. I would not want to give up a first round draft pick for Kerr. I would not want to give up ANY pick for Kerr.

Our key to success in this draft is to not get recycled players but to pick up young players in what will most likely be the last draft where the Gold Coast doesn't intervene.

Vickery>Warnock
Ziebell>Kerr (only going to play worse, getting old now)
Cousins...Well...Didak and Shaw are waiting for another drinking buddy. Anyway it does take a while to get back into footy after missing it for a whole year. By the time he does get back into it he will be too old to contribute.

Only trading the Tigers should be doing this year is for draft picks, not players.

Coz he 21 and he's 207cm who has shown a enough to sugges he could carry as as a number 1 ruckman when Simmo goes away. Pattison won't be able to do this while Graham and Putt are still a way off

He has the same amount of game experience as most of our list - less than Pattison. Although he is playing second/third fiddle to Sandilands...
By the time Warnock gets to number 1 ruckman Graham and Putt will be good enough, and assuming that we pick up a ruckman this year he will be ready to play well too.

Warnock is not worth a draft pick.
Who do we have to trade?

If they go out and get Warnock who is the coaching staff going to give up on??? We can't carry 5 ruckmen, 6 if you count Putt.

The club has invested time in Cartledge Graham and Patto without giving too many seniors opportunities to 2 of them and at least one of the trio has to go if warnock is traded for.

More importantly if Warnock does arrive where does that leave Patto??

I'm no talent evaluator, nor have I seen enough of 3 of guys I've talked about. Is Warnock that big of an upgrade that we will jettison potential and lose a valuable draft pick?

Situation is complicated more if Simmo hangs around longer than 1-2 seasons

People need to realise for all his effort Pattison will never be more than a 2nd ruckman. He is simply too short and doesn't have a leap to compensate. Graham I am less than convinced by but am willing to give time and Cartledge is 23 and won't offer much more than he already is.

Realistically we have the makings of a top 4 midfield within the next two years but if Simmonds goes away then we are in serious strife. Freo dominated the periods where Sandilands got ontop and I wouldn't want us to do a St. Kilda and squander our premiership hopes through an irrational hate of Ruckmen. We need a mid 20s ruckman because we didn't have the foresight to develop our own and instead have traditionally traded for rucks (see Deer, Charles, Stafford, Knoble and Simmonds). Warnock realistically isn't a bad target. It's just the price we're going to have to pay that's the pain.

Looks like Melbourne will get him they would be 1.20 favourites considering he went to there game, his brother and the position Melbourne has in the PSD.

.

We should be making every effort to get Cousins and we'd be mad not to at least try. Regardless of his on-field contributions, his work ethic and example on the training track alone will be invaluable, particularly when you consider he would cost us relatively nothing. :thumbsu:

Ottens.
Is Warnock the new Ottens? Or is Kozi? We need it to be someone. I think Kozi is a better fit for us actually but does he want to leave St Kilda? Would they let him? Probably not on either count i reckon. Which is a shame.

Hey, here's a wild one: Kozi and Warnock.

If Collingwood's serious about getting Cousins it'll take our 2nd or 3rd round pick in the ND to stop them.

Give this guy a medal. Finally out of all the crap I have read here finally someone has had the balls and heart to speak the truth. Very well said Simche! You are absolutely spot on 100%

I don't really mind if we go for Warnock, but only under the proviso that I don't think he's worth much.

But in your post you make an assumption (we will get a junior ruckman) that can't be substantiated. I would say it would be one or the other (Warnock OR a kid).

We have an emerging side with a moderate ruck division. I can live with that.

Save your time barring up about which juniors we might draft. It's a waste of time. I can remember hoping we'd get Carl Steinfort in 94 (I think it was). I can remember hoping we'd get Beau Dowler. Same with that kid who went to Adelaide and then St Kilda.

It was a waste of time because 1 day after the draft I didn't care one little bit as they had not gone to Richmond.

I've been thinking about this whole philosophy recently and there are good arguments for either side.

When I look at our list though, I see that the following players will be retiring within 2-3 years:

Richardson
Bowden
Johnson
Simmonds
Brown

Now, if we trade our picks for Kerr and Warnock then in 3-4 years we will have a lot fewer good youngsters coming through than we'd need to get on top. We have 2004-2007 returning us with quality, but we need another good batch or two.

We need to nail a draft the way Hawthorn nailed 2004 with a Buddy/Roughy/Lewis burst of talent coming through to replace our retiring seniors.

This will be more beneficial when they retire than a 29yo Kerr and a 25yo Warnock who may or may not be any good.

The risk is finding these kids.

A 21yo gun mid, a 20yo gun forward and a 20yo tall utility will set us up in 2011 more than a 29yo Kerr. But can we find that kind of quality with our draft picks?

We gave up Keplar Bradley at pick 6 to get Nathan G. Brown, so the risk works both ways.

Sorry Mario, got to disagree. This guy is 30, has been absolutely battered and seems to be more in love with being a celebrity than football. It would be a huge mistake for our football club to pick up Cousins.

...Don't start

If we can get Warnock for our second rounder and a fringe player (that will be more than what Melbourne offer) we must do it. People relying on Graham to become a number 1 ruckmen are kidding themselves and Putt is a long way off. Its ok to use draft picks but to get Vickery we would have to use our first pick on him anyway, so we may well get Warnock cheaper anyway. The other problem with drafting a young ruckmen is that it takes 4-5 years to get to AFL standard (atleast number 1 ruckmen standard). Simmo may only have 1 good year left and we would then have a gap of 3 or so years with no good ruckmen and they would be wasted. Warnock should be very good by 2010. This would also mean we could use our first round pick on a Key forward/ another good midfielder and fill one of those holes on our list as well as our ruck position.

So you are saying we should forget about Graham (who is in his 3rd year), but it takes ruckment 5 years to get to AFL standard?

Well this being our last normal draft for a while I would take all the picks you can get. Which means getting Warnock is out of the question unless Freo are stupid enough to take one of our older players for him.
