ESPN stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network.

The National Spelling Bee is one of many things that comes under the "entertainment" banner. Others include the Hot Dog Eating comp on the 4th of July, Poker, Fishing, World's Strongest Man and the Westminter Dog Show.

I am a little surprised that ESPN Australia show the National Spelling Bee, but no one is forcing you to watch it.
