Dont even know where this North rivalry stems from. Always seemed manufactured.
Comes from Bombers BigFooty posting losing the plot and being obsessed with North

Took less than 1 minute for a Bombers supporter to flip out at me lol

Case in point

It stems from historical off-field events mainly and that is why its one sided. Essendon basically did the dirty on us and we have hated them ever since. ATM there is next to no rivalry because we keep losing to them.

yeah i dont think its the bombers fans who are obsessed...........

you are the ones with a dedicated Essendon hate thread on your board.......that rarely drops off page 1.........no such thread about north exists on our board.

at least you admit it's one sided.

So what you're saying is that you check our board daily?? Who's obsessed?

Just every other day then, it seems. Truly the only time I remember Essendon exists is when I get reminded by Essendon supporters every week how much they totally don't care about us lol

lol

if that makes you feel better.

There was a rivalry there - a strong one - but it has become somewhat anaemic due to 2 decades of the AFL minimising scheduling between the two clubs in order to give return legs between the biggest Melbourne clubs and ensure they play the minimum amount of games against lower drawing non-vic clubs.

North Melbourne Afl GIF by NMFCOfficial

He is killing it. Killing it. And it kills them.

Was absolutely a rivalry from say 98 to 2000 or so.

It’s not one of those rivalries that sustains beyond a period when both teams are doing well.

Bit like Sydney and West Coast, epic rivals for a while, but not much beyond that.

I’m sure if Essendon and North became top teams again and played a series of good games then the media would beat up the history from 25 years ago and it would grow some legs again for a time.

But it was just kinda there for a short time when we were both good and then died.

I disagree with the sentiments of many Essendon supporters on here. I know North supporters can be wild with their Essendon hate (and we just ignore their weird antics), but I think there is a genuine rivalry. Many of them probably don't know many North fans IRL but I know plenty. There is history there, though it stems mainly from North being negatively impacted by Essendon. If I were to list our rivalries:

Carlton
Hawthorn
Collingwood
Richmond
North

West Coast and Sydney at times too because of the many close games, particularly West Coast.

North are the struggle bus of the AFL due to the off field antics of the Bombres on entry to the VFL. I’d be pissed too. Bombres can look around and say “wha”, but they are as underhanded and sketchy off-field as the Blues have been through their history.

I think you are right how you perceive it, and I would somewhat compare it to the Collingwood-Geelong rivalry.

It's an important rivalry for Geelong (probably the biggest after the Hawks), but Collingwood have much bigger rivalries against Carlron, Essendon, Richmond and traditionally, even Melbourne.

In the same way, North probably view their rivalry with Essendon as one of their biggest, whereas Essendon have much more significant ones with Hawthorn, Carlton and Collingwood.
