hmm, should be some interesting debate over this one .... although I'm all for trading a flanker for a KPP, Wirra is special, and I'd like to see hawthorn sweeten the deal, just think that Wirra has a much bigger upside. Especially since he has been relatively injury free for the past few years.

The fact remains, we need a KP defender, no doubts about it, and although we may miss Wirra, I'd hate to see him leave ... we do have cover, Green, Hunter, Collica, Read. None in his class, but then again, trent carroll isn't in Hay's class either.

It would crush me if we lost Wirra, he is an idol to the players and fans and I would not like to see him traded.

Sure he is injury-prone and we do need a player like Hay, but we have to keep leading identities at the club for the younger supporters to be able to connect with the team, and therefore build a stronger fanbase in years to come.

He is intregal to our success in the oncoming years, and I would urge West Coast officials not to consider trading him, but rather try and tie up that contract ASAP!

On top of all that Wirra has also stated that he wants to stay on with the Eagles while it appears that Hay has hinted he may want to venture home, so therefore wouldn't that put the dealings to try and secure Hay's services in our court and give us the upperhand on what talent would be available to the Hawks from our playing list if a trade was put to the table come trade week?

I had Wirra ranked 3rd in my personal Eagles MVP ratings. He would be a big loss, but IMO it's a no-brainer.
With Wirra playing most of his footy down back anyway, we don't lose as much as we gain by trading for Hay.
Quality key backs don't grow on trees, and Glass is going to need some help next year. Jako is past it, Carroll is useless, Seira is slow, Lynch has invisibiloustocoaches disease and Hunter is a part-timer.
I'd jump at this trade, and I'm sure Wirra would be just as happy to go home as he would be to stay.

I think you guys are over-estimating Hay. Sure, he was all-australian a few years ago but what has he done since? Through injury or form, he is now just an average AFL tall defender IMO He isn't worth 470k of the salary cap which is probably why Hawthorn may be prepared to let him go. I don't think anyone at our club would earn that much, it would be extremely disruptive...

I wouldn't pay him that much either - Hawthorn would have to chip in ala Melbourne for Woewodin at Collingwood. Injury free he is easily in the top echelon of key defenders in the AFL. His All-Australian year being the only year that he has been injury-free. Keeping him fit is the only question mark as far as I'm concerned.

What I dont get is:

1. Why trade Hay for Wirra when Hawthorn are worried about the cap? After all, Wirra is worth more than Hay.

2. Who said Wirra was going home? Wirra was happy to stay in Perth and be part of the Eagles for a lifetime.

3. Why has not Wirra signed yet?

4. Losing Wirra for Hay will be a huge loss for us. Sure Hay is a fullback, but nothing of significance. It would be a huge loss for us.

Wirrpunda isn't injury prone - he was apparently waiting until he hit a particular age to have surgery to correct his chronic leg problems. Now he's had surgery he has been the picture of consistency.

Won't happen.

Whoever "leaked" that the Eagles are poised to make a straight up offer of Wirra for Hay is doing so to strengthen Hay's negotiating position with the club. The Eagles are in no position to be looking at trading anyone at this stage of the year, we are still playing finals FFS.

Both players have previously stated they have no desire to return to their home states ATM.

I'd love to see Hay in an Eagles jumper as much as the next bloke, but this won't be the deal that clinches it.

As much as I love wirra - a straight swap for hay would be extremely benificial for us.

We need someone like hay more than we need someone like wirra - as special as he may be.

no thanks

Thanks but no thanks.

Wirra has said numerous times that it is his desire to play at one club. Hay has not said he wants to return.

Seems to me it is just his management trying to force the Hawks hand and make sure he is not the tall that they need to get rid of.

Absolutely.

I don't want to lose Wirra. He is a great person to have around the club and I think that's worth a lot.

Hay's good, but he's not that good.

if you're going to go by the article i think the key line is It is believed West Coast are poised to put an offer on the table at Hawthorn for a direct swap of the out-of-contract David Wirrpunda for Hay. ie west coast will put the offer on the table.

like any one eyed supporter i think wirra is to much for hay. throw in a 2nd round draft pick as well. of corse hawks fans will want wirra + a draft pick.

Agree totally.

The only exception would be if Wirra asked to go himself. You don't want to keep someone that doesn't want to stay.

I would swap Wirra for Joel smith. Like for like.

Wirrpunda wouldn't be used as trade bait for Hay IMO.

We basically would still have the same problems down back.

If we go after Hay, we'll give up someone who plays up front or in the middle.

A backline of Wirrpunda - Hay - Morrison ; Hunter - Gaspar/McDougall - Green

doesn't look to bad for mine in 2004.....

Another small defender I'd like us to really look at is Ashley McGrath. On the Brisbane board, there was a bit of interest in Glass, but we'd obviousbly have to throw in a draft pick to secure that one. But McGrath is a gun.....

As someone stated before, the hawks wouldnt accept wirra for hay, they would only trade hay to alleviate cap pressure, wirra wont do that. If anything they may look for something LIKE chambers+draft pick or lynch+draft pick ie a pick and a player whos shown he is decent/change may help and has fallen out of favour. What player they wanted would depend what positions they think are available and what we were willing to give. We couldnt trade duds like Carrol and a pick though, needs to be a decent up and comer that isnt costly.

i got this run down today from somebody who knows the hawthorn football club a bit better than me.

The Hawks will trade Harford for a pick and may just let him go for less and pay the difference as Melbourne did with Woewodin. That means that the Cap will go down by about 200-300 and they only have to pay 50 for the draft pick.

How about Hansen - he's a Vic and doesn't seem to be on Woosha's agenda. Personally I think Lynch is on the outer, and may be traded, but I reckon he's definately worth keeping.

Would love to see Hay in the blue and gold next year, but I wouldn't want to give up Wirrpunda who has turned his career around over the last 2 seasons.

"Hay's Perth-based management said yesterday the 24-year-old was bitterly disappointed at being asked to take a second pay cut in three years.

His agent Peter Christie said Hay wanted to return to Western Australia. "There is always the lure of either Fremantle or West Coast, who would do almost anything to get him back," Christie said.

Who would want to stay with your employer if they asked you to take a pay cut twice within such a short period of time.

Are you crazy? Do you realise how many times the ball goes into our defensive 50 only to be mopped up by Wirrpunda? If we were to trade him we would get an average to good tall backmen which IMO we already have in Glass.

Example of what might happen..... Hay in theory spoils Lloyd on the lead only for Wirrpunda to clean up.....oh wait, we traded Wirra. The Bombers crumb and goal. See where im going with this. Where will this get us? Please, for fun, name all our quality small defenders. Now for extra fun, name the two most likely small defenders to go AA this year.....

Not to mention that Wirra is a fan favourtie, been with us his entire career, is an extremely good player who actually wants to play for the club. A lot of you guys seem divided on this but IMO it's pretty clear cut. DONT TRADE WIRRPUNDA.

Ive just re-read this reply and it seems disjointed...but I cant be bothered fixing it. You can all tell what Im saying anyway.

Disjointed or not, I'm with you all the way (except I don't think Hay would get there in time to spoil Lloyd on the lead).

i'd rather take a punt on Glass than trade Wirra for Hay, Wirra is an essential part of our backline no way would you do a straight swap for Hay.

Also: reading that artical its says Hay is on big bucks, could we fit him into our cap without offloading?

Glass will play no matter if we get Hay or not - We need a minimum of 2 decent key defenders
