So if Waugh is in such great form, and his hand is fine, why did Hogg and Gilly bat ahead of him, and why did he declare when he was due to bat in the second innings?

you must be handicapped mentally in some way.

the first point has already been s-p-e-l-t out for you, and as for the second..

do you really think he should have batted on in the second innings?? perhaps his priorities lie with Australia winning.

Why is everyone so keen to get rid of Steve?

Who cares! Just let him play, he's not pulling the side down.

Just let the guy play for gods sake.

Actually no you didn't spell it out, you threw in a  and left my original question unanswered. I'll ask it again.

If his hand cannot handle the rigors of batting, why was he picked?

Given that he dropped down the order in the first innings, and declared when it was his turn to bat in the second, and had Ricky Ponting in his place at gully, suggests he was protecting his hand.

Waugh is not in the side because of his 7-2-16-0 of medium pace.

I thought another 30 runs would have been handy. A side with Lara it can chase any reasonable total, and 407 in about 130 overs is pretty generous (3.1 per over). The pitch was deteriorating, but a heap of runs had been made across the whole match. The end margin may have been 100 runs plus, but I don't think the Windies were that far away, they were in it until Lara got out. In terms of run rate required they were ahead.

With no McGrath in the attack, I think it's fair to say that Lara has the wood on most of the other blokes. With this in mind, I think Australia should have batted for another half hour or so, and had the Windies chasing 440 in 120-125 overs (3.5 per over).

Waugh is the #5 so yes he should have batted. If he can't handle two short innings of 30-40 minutes, why is he in the team?

The truth is no established Australian player is EVER going to walk away from the game voluntarily. The money is too good, and the strength of the Australian side combined with the generally appalling standard of other nations means there are easy runs and wickets to be had. Fact is even though Waugh is on the decline, against most other test nations he will still make plenty of runs. There aren't enough top quality bowlers around now, simple as that. Watching the current series there is no way the Windies will take 20 wickets in 5 days. They can't even land the ball on the spot. This isn't too decry Australia's achievements, but it's a sad reality.

steve waugh was in near career best one-day form when he was dropped from the side. he was averaging over 10 runs better per innings than his career average. yet he was dropped, and the team has gone from strength to strength, winning the world cup in spectacular fashion.

i say that his international form is sketchy at best, and for those that think he is in some kind of form, well, that didn't save him in the one day form of the game. if he can't even reach gavaskar's test runs (another 59) by the end of this series, then he should definately go.

but let's look at his five-day form for the last 18 months, since the kiwis toured and ended Steve's one-day career.

tests: 19
innings: 27
not outs: 2
runs: 778
100's: 2 (103*, 102)
50's: 4
avg: 31.12

his average over that time has dropped from 51.88 to 49.33. doesn't look like much, but an 18 month average of 31.12 is telling.

mark waugh's test average over his last 18 months was 43.09, up from his career average of 41.81.

thanks for the memories Steve, including a magnificent 200 in Kingston which I saw in person, but your time is up. You never were going to tour India again, I'd say that was a little tongue in cheek.

Onya Steve! :p

Oh, that's right, it's only a ****weak second rate worst ever Windies bowling attack.

For other members of the team hitting a hundred against that attack cements their place in the team and establishes them as genuine international top batsmen, but for you Steve I'm afraid it doesn't count.

well done Steve, no one denies the man is a legend. i still don't think he should play on until he's 50 years old though.

good thing bicks nursed him through the innings. (just kidding)

i have to question why we didn't declare a) once we made 600 or b) once Brett Lee got bowled. Has no impact on the game, just thought it odd compared with his declaration in the 2nd test.

Tino Best might have to wait awhile for his second cap.

I think the declaration was postponed as Waugh maybe wanted to fire Dizzy, Lee and Pigeon up before a few days in the field, plus let them have a bat for the series.
Pigeon's batting appearance came to a halt as Steve who doesn't like to give an inch wouldn't of wanted the Windies to get a hat-trick and put them on a little high before they went into bat.

I think we should still drop Steve Waugh, I have no reason to back this up with, but he should be dropped anyway.

How good a bowler is Darren Lehmann? The ball that he bowled to dismiss Ganga was an absolute jaffa. We will be hard pressed to see a more unplayable delivery this year. He'd be close to being in the top 5 left arm orthodox bowlers in world cricket.

Wot a load of rubbish

What a load of toss!

Hes only hit what 9 centuries since Christmas. Thats the sign of decline is it?

How many test tons does he need to get to keep u happy.

He could make a century ever bat and you would try to tell me he is in decline.

Whats his average for the last year? Have a look you might get a nasty shock.

you asked for stats. i posted this over a week ago, yes before this test and his 30th ton. his century improves his figures no doubt. i'd say it was a well timed knock though. if he had failed to get a decent score on tour, then like the governor-general, he may have had to start looking for a new job.

Drivel

By your reckoning then Michael Schumaker should be dropped from Ferrari.

Jeez hes only won one race this year so he must be no good anymore.

Any chance you could use intelligence to back up your answer?
Schumacher has been the #1 driver for the past two years, and is currently 2nd in the drivers championship, a mere 4 points adrift of top spot, after having won TWO out of five races this year.

So remind me how Steve Waugh's statistics over a full 18 month period compare/relate to Schumacher's for the first five races this year?

I didn't make the statistics up. They are fact.

Onya Steve.

Hope to see you still leading the Test Squad at the end of this summer.

don't mind R+B silver balls, he's just got one massive chip on his shoulder and a deep ingrained determination to rid the side of steve waugh, no matter how he performs. just remember, he is probably under a lot of stress, being an I.T. professional and all..

I didn't think you were posting on the cricket board anymore?
