AFL Club
Collingwood
This is such an exciting time to be a Collingwood supporter. A team on the rise. Young guns coming through in spades. Some of the most talented kids we have had at the club in a long time. This year there will be great wins, some hammerings, fantastic times and frustration ... Mark my words .... Roll it .... Wrap it .... Give it a date .... We are on the verge of a new magpie era. Bring on the next few years.

It is so exciting watching youngsters come through. I will never ever forget sitting in the Sherrin stand at Pie Park in 1979 as the Pies smashed the Saints by 178 points. The excitement of the crowd that day as a young first gamer midfielder wearing number 35 weaved some magic through 3 or 4 Saints defenders only to see his first kick sail out of bounds on the full. The Macedonian Marvel was born and football at Collingwood would never be the same again. The magic had begun.

Yeah, I agree...

I wanted to make a thread this week (but didn't have time) about us getting cocky. I felt like after belting Saints and Carlton all our supporters got a tad cocky... The media (who had been bagging us out at the start of the year) were suddenly talking us up big time, and we bought in to it. Now, after to losing to a decent team, we seem to be eating our own again. I think the fact that our back 6 had 2 players out of it this week didn't help. But ultimately the cats prepared and executed their plans better than us. It took as a half of footy to catch up and start playing our game. They had a point to prove, whereas we - to a degree - have already proved our point; we are not a bottom 4 side, and we are on the rise.
Geelong supporters still believe that they are premiership contenders. They needed this win. They were desperate.

Anyways, I particularly resonate with what you say in regards to having both big wins and big losses. We are such a young and inexperienced team that we will ocassionally get belted pillar to post. Similarly, because of that same youthfulness, we will also belt some other teams. Then we'll also probably play some good footy against teams we shouldn't beat and bad footy against teams we should.

Getting Sidey and Greenwood and Reid back at some point (if ever) will help. But we are NOT premisership contenders this year. We are not a top four side and thus we are not a premiership chance. That's just fact. if Geelong can do that to us, (overall I think they are a 3-6 goal better team than us atm), and Hawks, Port, Freo, Sydney (and maybe the dogs, who else?) are ahead of Geelong, then we are not even a top 6 side. we're an 8th-12th side. But we will beat some teams who are in the top 4 and lose to some that are bottom 4. That is just the nature of inexperience and youth.

I would expect that next year we will be pushing harder for a top 7 spot, then in 2017 we will be pushing again for top four once these young guys have 50-80 games under their belts and blokes like Reid, Shaz and co are back and performing.

Good times lay ahead! The awesome part about this year is there are very little expectations and pressure on us. No one really cares about collingwood atm because we're not a huge threat. So let's just ride the roller coaster of Collingwood this year... enjoy the ups and embrace the downs. We got slapped a couple of times in 2010 even as far as I remember! And we have more youth in this side now than we did then. So let's just chill and enjoy watching our young guys (like Crisp) take the next step!

Without a doubt in the world there is enough potential at the club to see us becoming a very strong side. Top 4 definitely.

Actually surprised to see some positive support on the board, it's a fantastic change :D As per usual I'm going to skirt a wide berth around the post-match and 'changes' thread for the week :P

The big step of course is going from an exciting prospect to actually producing, and hopefully we can start to see that consistency come next year, and of course that we don't drop off in the second half of 2015 like we did last year.

I thought new draftees got 2 year deals when drafted? If this is so, then shouldn't De Goey & Moore be signed until October 2016?

Thanks :thumbsu:

Updated :)

Of the young grp in our current 22 are going to be elite A grade talents?

Grundy maybe in his role.

Elliott? again maybe but his type can fade as fast as they rise ala Medhurst.

We all hope that Hine absolutely nailed the 13 and 14 drafts and are banking on Freeman Shaz DeGoey Moore and a smokey in Abbott to bringing some elite traits into what i would call a team occupied by a lot of hard working role players who have a fair bit of NQRs about them individually.

Kenno Broomy and others are nore then likely going to be good players without necessarily being elite.
Thats ok as long as we also get a couple absolute elite players out of the other groups.

This is so we don't find ourselves out gunned like so many other times we have in contention.
Atm Dogs GWS Suns have is pound 4 pound on talent. This is why playing the kids and having one more down year would be beneficial over trying to play vfl quality talent that will both negate afl development of top kids and doubly have us finish too high up the ladder to get the cream.

There are not too many players who have shown as much as Oxley after only 8 games. Beams would be one. Sidebottom maybe. Pendlebury definately not.

Frost would easily be on the same trajectory as Nathan Brown (Frost has played 30 games, Brown played in the 2010 grand finals with his games 49 and 50)

I have no doubt in the world that Langdon will reach AA status in his career - it won't be 2015, but it'll be sooner rather than later.

Oxley is a nqr having a good year but will get found out once teams put time into him.
Has pace query, is slight build and knocked off the ball easily, struggled defensively when not playing wing and essentially loose and finally is a tad on the soft side.

Great kick generally, is finding it well and appears to read the play well. Wont be an elite a grader.

Now Im not saying we don't have any talent on the list im saying of those exposed currently under 23 we don't have many if any genuine star material elite players coming through.

Agree - Oxley will be a Good Player but not close to a A-Grader

People should be excited to watch skill, daring and big marks regardless of the age. Why people get excited watching 18-22 olds run around makes me scratch my head.

Pretty fair assessment but I would say that Grundy is the most elite talent on performances we have. He needs to take more marks around the ground though.
