Anyhoo, no haiku's this time I'm afraid as we return to normal programming for Round 7:

7.01 DBAH0 - Brandon Roy
And the first rookie is taken. I've never seen him play, but by all accounts he is favourite for Rookie of the Year and is a good scorer who also has a decent all-round game. Probably the right time to take him I'd say.

7.02 sirjames - Luke Ridnour
His starting job is under threat, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't hold onto it for the entire season. Even if he only plays around 30mpg he'll still get great assists, steals, ft% and t/o's, but probably needs to become a bit more of an outside threat. A good value PG pickup for sirjames at this stage.

7.03 X_Box_X - Troy Murphy
Like I mentioned, Murphy was a guy I was looking at in the previous round. He should qualify at C soon, which eases X_Box_X's problems somewhat. The last double-double guy on the board (based on last year's stats). Obviously not a traditional big-man so the fg% and lack of blocks will hurt, but the 3's & steals will make up for it. A good pick.

7.04 morpheus - Wally Szczerbiak
Well Wally's knee is still dodgy but it shouldn't hurt his stats since he's not much more than a shooter. The %'s, points and 3's are nice and this is not a bad pick at all, but I might've taken a punt on one of the other swingmen taken in this round.

7.05 GeeCat - Samuel Dalembert
Is this the year Sammy finally breaks out? The potential suggests this is a valid pick here but the no's tell a different story. Yes, the blocks are fantastic but can Dalembert become more than just a one-category specialist? Can't blame GeeCat for taking him here though, as he needed a C badly.

7.06 Showbag - Eddie Jones
Who will step up with Pau injured? Don't overlook Jones, who can still get it done. The 3's and steals in particular are great - which makes it a good pick for Showbag as he looks to find a good balance in small-man and big-man categories.

7.07 voodoo_86 - Mike Miller
That said, I'd put my money on Miller become the Girzzlies main offensive weapon in the early going. 18+ points and 2+ threes would make a good pickup here and Miller is not averse to grabbing the odd rebound as well. A popular sleeper pick this season and someone worth taking at this point in the draft.

7.08 Borgsta - Luol Deng
I'm not sure where Luol will fit into Skiles' plans - he struggled for a long stretch last season - so the extent to which this young guy will continue to improve is questionable. His rebounds went up last year and I expect his steal and 3's to do the same this time round. A decent pick as there's no reason why he can't be as effective fantasy-wise as Iguodala.

7.09 Colonel Matrix - Danny Granger
Another swingman taken, but I'm not a fan of this pick. Yes, Granger showed flashes of being a multi-cat star as a rookie, but one decent game in every ten is not gonna cut it for a pick this high. A starting position for Granger and approx. 30mpg is still questionable in my book (I know Kenny hates Marquis, but I think he can help out the Pacers). Granger will eventually become a valuable fantasy player and who knows, it could pay off handsomely for the Colonel this season, but IMO he's more of a mini-Battier than a mini-Matrix at this stage in his career.

7.10 Kenny_01 - Shane Battier
Speaking of Battier, I would've really liked this pick if Bonzi hadn't signed up with the Rockets. Make no mistake, I still like the pick, but not as much anymore since Bonzi could take away rebounding and scoring opportunities. Battier will no doubt become a favourite of Van Gundy's though, so expect that rare combo of at least 1 three, steal and block along with good %'s. An intangibles player who actually provides worthwhile fantasy no's. Good pick.

7.11 Falchoon - Larry Hughes
Yeah, the injury concerns are there but I think Hughes is probably worth taking at this point (whether I myself would've taken him is another story). I still think he can form an effective partnership with LeBron and help reinforce Falchoon's already strong rebound, assist and steal numbers. The finger sounds like it's still giving him problems though.

7.12 hans moleman - Pau Gasol
Pau was just too tempting to pass up at this stage and I wanted another rebounder and shot-blocker on the team. Who knows, it could be late into the season before Pau starts producing any fantasy-worthy numbers. I guess it was my turn to take a risk on an injured player.


Worst pick - Danny Granger. A sink or swim selection.
Best pick - Troy Murphy. My personal preference in a round full of very subjective picks.
 
Good summary.

And I don't hate Marquis... but I was going for the Mavs last playoffs and watching Daniels was painful. His stats might have been ok, I don't know, but no vision, made stupid decisions, just really cost the Mavericks.

I said to myself, I bet the Mavs get rid off him, and surely enough they did.

And on Battier... he will start at PF and I'm expecting 36mpg between his time between PF and SF. He played PF for the Dream Team he said and he also said he played some PF last season. I am expecting more blocks but perhaps less steals. I think his rebounds might remain similar.
 
And I also like the pick of Granger, even though it might have been a round too early.

He will start at SF. Al will start at C, believe it or not. That, and the fact that Granger can play SG and PF also will give him about 30-34 mins per game I think. I think he will be ranked a top 60 fantasy player by the end of the season. JON is also an injury risk so could be relied upon more.

I was thinking the same with Granger until they picked up Al. I'd certainly never heard about Al being played at C, although its definately a position they seriously lack at so its an option. I think he is a pretty good pick although I'd probably have gone with Prince just before him.

I just call it how I see it, and hey, the spreadsheet backs up my claims :p

If it's any consolation, I seem to be the only one who thinks Granger was taken too early and you're team does have a lot of potential (plus I did think Hinrich was the best pick in round 4)...anyways, I look forward to our first 'grudge matchup' during the season :)
 
My Korver pick was pretty awful, I do admit. But my needs were such that I could not afford to miss out on him, so I took him earlier than I expected. More a strategic decision than merit-based, because the guy doesn't do much else than plant himself in three-ball territory.

Korver is alright dude... always ends up being ranked pretty highly. Top 50 last season, think he was top 30 odd season before.

His %'s are decent, you get points, treys, low t/os, a few boards, a steal a game and a couple of assists too. And his exceptional treys makes him a pretty good player... you could have got him later though.

Having said that though this is the riskiest team I've ever selected in my fantasy years... I'm hoping that Manu/Granger/Williams (all of whom have plenty of upside) have a big year!
 
Ok I promised Kenny i'd wait to post this until his picks were over but now is the time for a bit of discussion on this topic:

Promoting unselected players.

Maybe i'm just way too competitive. Maybe I'm just far too cynical. Personally I think the -only- reason anyone in their right mind would talk up a player that hasn't been taken yet is to divert attention from a smokey you have your eyes on yourself.

Now I can sort of understand that if you've got 20 picks until your next choice then pointing out the obvious probably wont hurt (you). But this is happening with only a few picks before the person who name-dropped is due to select.

I know Kenny talked up Nocioni and Knight to divert attention away from Hedo and Radman, even threw Randolph in there for a bit of a laugh before i told him he was being way too obvious ;)

I know i've had on 1 occassion someone in mind and someone name-dropped that player - i pretty much scratched him off the list of potentials then and there because i know if I saw that myself and was tossing up between 2 players (and thought the comment was legit) i'd sway towards that guy.

So what's the deal fellas.. are we all caring-and-sharing upstanding and honest citizens, or are we:

- trying to divert attention of the guy we really want
- trying to ensure someone you rate as your closest competitor doesn't get a player that would really suit their team (hoping someone before them picks)
- trying to make the person who just chose second guess their pick (not sure why, but it'd be fun haha)
- play the whole reverse psychology card now i've gone and put these thoughts into everyones head by talking up a player you really want cause now everyone will think you have alteria motives ;)
 
hehe. Well I mentioned Prince last night and he was picked up this morning. My theory behind saying it was simply that I thought he'd go within in the next 2-3 picks and wouldnt actually last to me.

I thought steals were his best category, I nearly picked him in both of the last 2 rounds, having ranked him in the 90's .

The Houston rotation/playing time and the fact I didn't want another crock (not that it really matters at this stage) swayed me towards other options.

Granger won't play shooting at all, I don't think he knows how to play that position, he'll play backup SF or PF or at best start at SF with Al at PF & Jermaine at C.

Prince should have gone earlier, I can't believe I got him with that pick.
