Expectations for 2026

I've never been as furious with a game as I was with that ****ing game vs Norf in Bunbury. It's making me mad all over again just thinking about it. Holy shit we should have buried them. Just ****ed.
Yep. Kick straight and we win by 10 goals. They kick straight for 6 minutes and we lose instead.

For those watching every WCE home games this year must have observed the following: (not easy to see on TV though)
1) The coach has constantly tried different drills and pack/zone structures in different quarters. This has caused instability and unfamilization to the players (This also explains why we won some quarters but failed badly at the end)
2) Also, we did not play a spare man behind the ball in some quarters. When we did, we used people like Dewar whose defensive effort was quite poor. A turnover often caused a goal against. (In short, poor defensive set up)
3) Our tight pack formation required players running fast to break the pack and when opposition defended well on us, the play became very congested and contested. Some players started giving up easily.(Probably, thinking we were playing to train rather than to win).

I am sure we will address these problem in 2026 and will be winning more games than losing. I also expect we will play more "kick/mark" than 2025.
That’s the first time I’ve seen anyone mention Dewars poor defensive game but it is true. He has skill and provides good run but defensively he is poor. Maric can also be poor at times but both are favoured to provide that run from defence because of their kicking skills. When and if he they turn the ball over (or Duggan does) there is no plan to fill in for them on coverage of their man. That’s when easy goals are kicked against the team and the game is lost. McCarthy does not seem to have the same problem even though his game is based on run and disposal.

Wow, it's just a lost game amongst many lost games in a season, amongst many lost seasons. Why beat yourself up so much? If it's particularly a Norf issue, maybe we'll beat them this season?

I’m bullish. I expect to beat the following at home and challenge if not beat away:

  • North
  • Richmond
  • Essendon
  • Port
  • Carlton
  • Melbourne

That would have us 12th. That’s my minimum.

I can see us pushing:
  • Bulldogs
  • Swans (home only)
  • St Kilda (home only)
  • Collingwood (sliders)
  • Fremantle

Split them 50/50 and we’re in wildcard territory. I haven’t checked our fixture.

I think this can be a 2002 year, if injuries are kind to us.

Things are looking much more rosey this year (as they tend to in Pre-season) but more-so this year than in the past.
I usually take the optimists view _ I thought we might pinch 5-7 wins this year as an example (before we lost Yeo, Waterman Gov and essentially Oscar), but with cautious optimism I predict the following:
Win 8 including a sneaky Derby win.
Finish outside the bottom 4.
At least 3 of Duursma, CDT, Lindsay, Davis and Shanahan get Rising star nominations with one of them winning it.
Ginby to make the AA squad of 40.
Shanahan and Waterman combine for 100+ goals for the season.

With 2 key forwards combined with 100+ goals, the team should be in the top 8.

I'm thinking the 2025 season was just a re-building experimenting season where win/losses were just taken off the board.
New coach and game plan and a lot of young developing players.
Missing Yeo and then losing Gov, Oscar (who had really already checked out), Sheed, Waterman just would have really emphasized the fact that it wasn't about winning but learning, understanding and improving on how we want to play. Also learning what the different players can bring with their strengths and weaknesses.

2026 is a new season and most of the players and coaches have a better understanding of what is expected. there is more competition for spots and the 1st and 2nd year players want to be playing AFL footy not biding their time in the WAFL. Makes for some interesting times when a best 22 has a bad/average game.

I 100% believe we will not have another 24/25 season and we will catch a few teams napping early in the season. This is where we can pinch an unexpected win or two.
Obviously there is still a big gap between us and the top teams but I think the middle of the ladder and bottom teams will be a lot closer than recent years.

I want 5+ wins at 70+% and not finish on the bottom. Would like to finish above Richmond, Essendon and North oohhhh and Saints please 😁
Wouldn't be surprised if we get a surprise win against a top 4 team from last year if we can catch them off guard.
5-6 Rising star nom's would be awesome as it would show our youth are on the right track.

Minimal, minimal injuries.

2006 is back! Who needs small forwards when you have goal kicking mids?

Our 2006 Premiership side was bizzare in hindsight - we basically played two rucks, a full back, two makeshift tall forwards and about four teams worth of midfielders.

[And the second ruck was basically there for show]

Q stick and Adam Hunter being in career form during those mid 2000s helped.

Last round vs Hawthorn in 2019 was pretty darn frustrating with actual stakes.
The North game this year was basically meaningless.

Back in the heady days of 2018 I was pissed off with a WIN vs St Kilda.

How times change. We could have and SHOULD HAVE beaten Norf. We should have doubled our win count (without affecting our draft hand). And we lost because we couldn't hit the side of a barn after dominating all game.

That's what made the Norf game so infuriating

It's preseason - so the flag becauss ****in' anything is possible.

I wouldn't be sleeping on North next year.

Yeah, they have shown nothing for years, but there were serious signs they are on the up last season, and I think they will step up big time next season.

Maybe one of the wildcard(🤮) spots I would pencil them in. No longer easy beats

That game was hot n cold coz we were dominant, led by like 50 in the last then let them kick the last 7 plus JD did his ankle and was never the same as that first half of 18

I'm not going
I expect we will be more competitive, be in games longer and hopefully pinch a few (4-7)

Im sure there will be the odd fall back to a shit show, maybe even a 100 pointer but generally better

Hopefully 1-2 goals average better for and 1-2 goals less agst
This is my line of thinking, but I'd probably be a little bit more bullish.
Last season was the season we had to have, ripping the band-aid off and now we're fully set to head in the right direction.

yeah but you often see lower teams have a run of good efforts followed by a blow out loss, which is fine as long as theres a bounce back

Yep I agree with that. If we're in a situation where we have a blowout loss like that and be confident it's an anomaly rather than reverting to the norm then I guess that indicates progress! :D
