Not expecting too much to change in 2004 in regards to where we finish on the ladder (especially with our current gameplan ) although a lucky run with no major injuries and our best 22 playing 18+ games would see us finish a few rungs higher and even scrape into a final 8 spot. See 2004 as a stepping stone.

Apart from Brown who is our only addition of true quality (won't count Morrison until I see him play) we have mainly spent the offseason replacing a number of "duds" with young promising kids at the bottom end of our list. Hence our poor depth won't improve for another year or two at least. We will be mainly relying on the likes of Krakouer, Rodan, Fiora, Blumfield (injured 2003) etc improving so they contribute to the team on a consistent basis.

Looking forward to seeing Newman (a kid of all class) step up another level, Schulz spending more time in the seniors and finally seeing a whole heap of fresh young faces at Tigerland.

All we need is for Ottens to be injury free. The form he was showing in the final rounds really whet the appetite for what is to come. He will be the first choice ruck and should start to dominate.

As long as he doesn't take too many Brownlow votes off Coughlan!

Campbell has already indicated that he will stand down as captain at years end. While Gaspar would be the most likely choice to don the #17, Johnson or Coughlan would also be in with a chance as well.

And to think that a few years back, I was calling for Bowden to be Knights replacement as captain! Oops!

i expect us to show a slight improvement next year but i have my doubts we will make the 8.too many if,s and but,s.id be more than happy to see the improvement in the likes of rodan,krakour,schultz,newman and finally fiora to show us why he was picked ahead of pavlich.

For the first time in 10 years, I do not expect us to make the finals. I think there will be a change of coach during the season and that we will put together some good games towards the end of the year when we throw out the flooding and assorted bland, wandering, listless football that Frawley brings to Richmond. I expect Krakouer, Rodan and Fiora to improve. There is still not enough help in the midfield for Coughlan and Johnson, I realise Brown will be thrown in there, however, I see him more as a forward/ midfielder and will play as a crumbing forward.

I expect that we will make the eight, I dont know what else I could want apart from that.

I dont expect the coach to be sacked. Frawley is a good coach (No matter what digglers claims). Yabbie Jeans (the god of coaching) always spoke some words of wisdom when it came to coaching footballers..(....they're still sausages). Keep it simple for them, thats frawleys style.

I think the cattle has been a definite problem at richmond, not the coach. I am more positive of the team now, hope for a low injury season.

Expectations for 2004:

- Coughlan and Johnson to dominate.

- Campbell, Gas and Bowden to return from injury but not back to their best till 2nd half of season. As a result we finish strongly.

- Otto and Fiora to have big years.

- Richo to be his usual brilliant, frustrating self.

- Tiv, Chaff, A.Kellaway and Newman to continue on with their good form from this year with Newman to spend more time in the midfield.

- New recruits in Brown, Tuck and Blumfield to reward our faith.

- Morrison, Weller, Fletcher and Fleming to be honest toilers.

- Krakouer, Rodan, Zantuck and Shulz to continue to improve. Shulz was drafted bottom age would have been eligible for this years National Draft.

- Make or break seasons for Hyde, Hall, Nicholls, Hilton and Pettifer. Hyde (backline/tagger) and Hall (at CHB) to be the surprise improvers. Tempted to add Nicholls also, just not sure where his best position would be.

- Do not expect any of our young recruits with the exception of possibly Gilmore or Hartigan (late in season) to play senior footy. With Jackson doing VCE I expect he won't even spend that much time with Coburg. As a result playing with a useful list of about 33.

- Cosgriff to be promoted from the Rookie list after consistent AGGRESSIVE, eyecatching performances at Coburg which draw comparisons to Aaron Hamill.

- Club will continue to rebuild with delistings at end of 2004 to come from Houlihan, Fleming, Fletcher, and Marsh. Hyde, Hall, Nicholls, Hilton and Pettifer also need good seasons to continue after 04.

- D.Kellaway and Rogers to retire at end of 2004, with Staff talked into going round for one more.

- Kane Johnson to replace Campbo as Skipper at end of season. Gas too introverted. Campbo to play on.

- One of two scenarios for Spud. Club to start poorly and Spud to be sacked. Club to finish stronger under new coach (mainly due to Campbo, Gas, and Bowden's 2nd half form) or Tiges have a reasonable year and finish 6-8 and renew Spud's contract.

- All in all looking forward to watching our new players and some of our older ones who are on thin ice with a point to prove. Hopefully some stiff competition for a senior game. Ultimately injuries will once again dictate where we will finish. Anything is possible.

2004.....BRING IT ON!

What I'd really like to see is someone kick 60+ goals.

Whether that is -

Brown--highly feasable if played at ff/fp evey game

Richo--very much doubt it,if he hasnt mastered the set shot by age 29 he never will

Ottens-top set shot but required for rucking duty.

Blumfield/Bowden 30 odd each

I dont really care but if we want to sneak into the 8 one of that lot or the bowden blumfield combination have to score fairly heavily.
Might add that if krakour or rodan could become a great goalsneak that would also be mighty handy.

On the subject of Ottens--i noticed in an article Frawley plans to make Ottens our no.1 ruckman and have Richo full forward.

I think this is a big mistake.I'm of the opinion that ruck is not the essential spot its made out to be.Besides Stafford is a more than capable ruckman.I rate having a gun full forward a much more important consideration.I believe Ottens could make a top full forward if he was left there the whole game for the whole season.He 's almost a lay done misere any set shot inside 50--much like Lloyd.

Stafford should start in the ruck and change off the bench with Ray Hall or Marsh.

Richo should be allowed to play CHF--he s the leading contested marker in the league.

Brown I'd stand next to Ottens to either lead or crumb and Krakour I'd stand next to Richo.Blumfield and Bowden to roam in the forward 1/2 of the ground.

I expect the team to have a less predictable gameplan. If the team is not flexible enough, good coaches like Malthouse and Sheedy will figure us out and eventually so will the rest of the competition. If we don't, we might win one or two against poor opposition but that will be it.

If we dont develop a less predictable gameplan, I would expect Danny Frawley will be a major casualty in 2004.

I couldnt disagree more. The reason why Ottens hasnt reached his potential yet is cos they keep moving him around. He will be a brilliant ruckman if he was just left there all season. The ruck is a ****en important position and Ottens will definitely win us more games in the ruck than he will in the forward line.

Yeh thats fair enough scroda.Stafford is a capable tap ruckmen though ,wouldn't you agree?I'll say this.The only times Richmond has been a serious contender in the last 20 years were when we've had a goalkicker that could kick 70+ goals.

1980 it was Roach over 100 ,later on it was Mathew Hogg who kicked 74 from memory,then our good year 1995 Richo kicked 70 odd.
I can't see anyone else atm who is capable of a 70+ season apart from possibly Brown who most people pick to play midfiled.

Perhaps Schulz in a few years.

In 2001 we didn't have a super goalkicker (from memory)

Port, Collingwood, Sydney, West Coast, Adelaide, Fremantle - don't think any of them had huge goalkickers this year. The only ones in the top eight who did were Lynch and Lloyd (and even he didnt dominate in 2003).

Yet Port, West Coast, Sydney (until Ball got injured), Brisbane all benefited from standout ruckmen whilst Fremantle, Collingwood, Essendon were all criticised for poor ruckmen

I just think we would be a much better team with a permanent Brad Ottens Ruck. The rest would fall from that.

From memory, Richo did his knee early in the year in 95 when he kicked about 27 goals 3 beinds. I recall the biggest goalkickers for us were the likes of Daffy, Naish, and the rest being an even contribution.

evo agree 100% with your earlier post. Ottens should play forward and Stafford should ruck. I watched Ottens play a lot up front when he first came to the club, and he is all class. He knows where to run and when to run. Despite all the criticisms about poor midfield delivery, he makes the midfield look much better than Richo does. And he's one of the best kicks for goal we have.

Also agree with your 2nd post that we need a 70+ goalkicker. Except that from memory, Richo was out most of the season in 1995 with a knee he did hitting the boundary fence in Sydney. Which leads me to argue that if you look back at the years Richo has been out, we finished much higher than when he played.

One-eyed tiger, also enjoyed reading your post. I reckon it covers it all. Only disagree that Frawley contract will get renewed. There's a lot of people at the club that were directly involved in going all out for a new coach. Sheedy, Malthouse, Lyons, and right at the bottom of their list was Frawley who got the job. He only got it because the top 4 candidates said no at the time. And they said no because we kept sacking coaches. Since we havent sacked Frawley, and honored the contract, a lot of people at the club will be thinking we've now got credibility to attract a proven coach without them being scared of getting sacked. It will be interesting to see how much say Miller and the new CEO really have. If its a board decision, there's no way Frawley can be renewed.
