External hard drive problem

Hey guys,

I have an 500gb Maxtor Basics External HD
i got it late january
and for some reason just recently its not working. My computer doesnt recognize the device nor does it even acknowledge that it isnt recognized

What should i do?

How much stuff is on it? If you can spare to lose it, then a Format is your best option

Try it another computer. Try it in with another cable. Are you sure its not showing only in Explorer? Check Disk Administrator (admin tools/comp mgmt). I recently had a problem drive that wasn't showing in explorer but was in DA.
I ran error checking tools on it and it fixed it.

Try another USB port, can you connect other devices to your machine?

One thing to try is to turn your computer off and unplug all the cables so there is no power. Leave off/unplugged for about 30 seconds then reconnect and try again. Sometimes a USB port can lock up as such, was a bug in Windows XP SP1 I believe.

I had the same problem and it turned out the 5 pin connector that goes from the adapter to my hard drive was broken, asked WD for a new one and in 3 weeks got my new one and it was working.

ah kk, yeah i just sent it too maxtor through dick smith. it should take 6-8 weeks.
