In case you are unaware, last week EzyDVD went into receivership [link].
Today there's a story in the Geelong Addy that mentions people who have orders are unlikely to get them and that the gift vouchers aren't being honoured.

GEELONG movie buffs are out pocket after EzyDVD went bust and receivers put a block on the DVD retailer honouring gift vouchers and giving refunds on customer orders that won't be fulfilled.

At Geelong's EzyDVD there is $35,000 worth of DVD orders that are unlikely to reach customers' hands.

DVD chain scratched

Phew, just last week ordered seasons 2-3-4 of The Wire. Was about to get them from ezydvd until someone said they were a couple of bucks cheaper at JBHiFi.

Thanks to whoever that was.

That's very surprising. I thought they would continue as normal, someone would buy the chain then shut the non profitable stores, but still honour the orders.

The comany are still operating, at least in the interim.

The receivers are trying to find a buyer for the company (and the company owned stores).

Doug Dorward, Geelong Ezydvd owner
"We had the CEO (of EzyDVD) here three weeks ago and he didn't say anything.
"I just feel angry I was never ever told what was going on."

I feel for the franchisees who have put up $300k for their store and have now been done up like a kipper, but i find it hard to believe that they didn't know anything until now given that the company had been cut off by their suppliers some two months ago and thus no new release titles have been distributed to franchisees in that time.

Blasphemy! Those stores were truly great. This is most depressing news.

The b&m stores (along with the online rentals thing they tried) are part of the reason for their predicament.

Ezydvd have always charged a premium for the majority of titles and that wasn't an issue in the early days because generally, punters were pretty ignorant about the dvd market.

But as people became more educated (and the market became more competitive) Ezydvd's pricing became an albatross around their neck.

The online store still did well because it was well presented, well maintained and had little competition, but the b&m stores didn't have that luxury.

These b&m stores were positioned in big shopping centres that also housed Big W, Kmart and in some instances, JB Hi-Fi.
Why would anyone go to Ezydvd and pay $35 for a new release when they can walk a few doors down to Big W and pick the same title up for $27?

The bigger stores are able to use dvds as loss leaders, a luxury that Ezydvd didn't have, so once the initial fascination was done, their stores were doomed.
Uncompetitive operators just don't last in our market (Harvey Norman is the exception, sadly).

I always thought it was much cheaper to buy elsewhere so I rarely went in.

Not surprising if you ask me.

it's like shopping at Sanity...

Very true.Let's just look at the price difference of a recent release DVD like Tropic Thunder

Big W - $25 [I got it on special for $20 their the other day]
Sanity - $30
EzyDVD - $40

I like their website and often used it to get cheap box-sets or older movies. Prices were usually good and delivery excellent.

However, I never bought anything from their shops, despite visiting once a week. It always felt disorganised and they had limited stock.

I won't particularly miss them, but it sucks for the franchisees.

Not surprising this has happened. They were way too expensive and didn't have a huge range to choose from, unlike JB Hi-Fi.

Their online store was quite good as others have said. I picked up a number of classics from them.

Is that the single disc edition, or the two disc SE ???

That's the single disc prices. The single and double discs are the same price at EzyDVD [rather odd],but the double disc is $37 in Sanity compared to $30 for the single.Don't know about the price of the double at BigW.

Over here in WA they just opened a new JB in Carousel shopping centre (theres a huge JB just down the highway too).

About a week after it opened, the little EzyDVD store started a 'EVERYTHING AT COST + $1' sale.

Probably not a great sign!

I sometimes find the odd bargain in an Ezydvd store, but apart from that I go to JB HiFi or Big W all the time.

However, always use the EzyDVD website for finding out when new titles are released etc. :thumbsu:

I thought Credit cards weren't charged until the DVD left the warehouse so how are people out of pocket for unforfilled orders?

My local EzyDVD store is almost always empty when I go in there and I'll only go in there to see if I can find any good bargains. However, usually they're just offering the same titles for the same or higher prices than everybody else.

The store in my area has only been open for about a year and I don't understand how they've survived this long, as I don't see how they can turn a profit.

Back in 2003 and 2004 I ordered 5 or 6 DVDs from their website and didn't have any complaints.

Then for some reason I ordered a DVD from the Atlantic DVD website. I noticed Atlantic DVD sent it in a sizeable package with much bubblewrap. This drew my attention to the fact that EzyDVD sent their DVDs in a basic DVD case-size envelope.

I then looked at the DVDs I got from EzyDVD and notice the edges of the case corners were slightly scratchy compared to the smooth condition of my other DVDs. From that point on I never used EzyEVD again.

I went to any of their shops so I can't comment on them.

Hopefully, most people only paid a small deposit when they put their order in at the store.

People should contact their credit provider about reversing the charges, but then again those banks are probably creditors as well.
