Was a decent show back in its day, but wow it has aged poorly.

I agree it hasn't aged well, much like The Drew Carey Show. Other shows in this era - Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond and The Nanny - have held their age better. The show took an unusual path - starting off well, declining later in its run, then having a good last season.

My favourite episodes included:

  • Rachel dating a guy who had a very strange relationship with his sister.
  • Rachel trying to teach Joey to sail
  • Joey lying on his resume about his singing/dancing abilities, this backfiring when he was cast in a Broadway musical
  • Monica and Chandler going to speak to a couple who had adopted a child, Chandler accidentally informing the boy he was adopted.
  • Ross dying his teeth for a date, who was horrified that his teeth glowed in the dark, Ross explaining that he "did it all for her"
  • Phoebe tactlessly asking for some of Monica's old high school clothes while she (Phoebe) was pregnant, as maternity clothes were too expensive.
  • Joey and Chandler taking Ross's infant son to the park, everybody assuming they were a gay couple who had adopted.

Loved this show when it was on. Favourite season would be one of the earlier ones, as the quality defintiely dropped off midway through. Didn't really have a favourite character, but my favourite episode was easily the one with brad pitt. Have watched that one a few times on foxtel and it still cracks me up.

Who was your favorite chararter? Probably Phoebe or Chandler before he got with Monica.

What was your favorite Episode? The Unagi ep, The one where they find out about Monica and Chandler and Where they have the quiz for the apartment or getting rid of the birds.

I love that one.

Ross: What was Monica's nickname when she was a field hockey goalie?
Joey: Big fat goalie.
Ross: Correct.

So many awesome questions in that one.

I also love the storyline where Ross can't name all 50 states.

I also love the storyline where Ross can't name all 50 states.

Where Joey thinks there are 56 states...

Chandler: Time's up. Pheebs, how many you got?
Phoebe: Well, I started naming states, but then I got tired of it. So, I started naming different types of celery. So far I only got one- regular celery.
Chandler: ...Okay, Phoebe's got the lead in vegetables. Rach?
Rachel: 48.
Chandler: Not bad. Joey?
Joey: Behold the new champion of Chandler's stupid state game.
Ross: How many you got?
Joey: 56.

I also love the storyline where Ross can't name all 50 states.

That is also one of my favourites. There is alot of quality episodes. Other favourites of mine are The thanksgiving one with brad pitt, when ross buys the leather pants and the one with the lottery. Phoebe on the phone pretending to be the pigeon never fails to crack me up.

One of my favourite shows ever! I like all the seasons but my favourites would probably be from season 3 onwards, but still like the first 2. I really like the way Ross' character changed, he was a bit mopey early on. Its a show that i can just watch repeats over and over and over without getting sick of them.

One of my favourite episodes was when Ross and Mona have "Tha Talk" lol.

A character i thought was brilliant that was not one of the main cast was Phoebe's boyfriend Mike. The scene where him and Ross hang out at Ross' apartment while Phoebe and Rachel have a girls night is great. As is when Mike and Monica play table tennis :)

Does anyone else find it really funny when Chandler does them funny dances lol.

Phoebe: No, huh uh, no way, I'm sorry, not gonna happen.
Chandler: Whoa, whoa, prom night flashback.

Monica: Joey, what would you do if you were omnipotent?
Joey: I'd probably kill myself.
Monica: Excuse me?
Joey: Hey, if "Little Joey"'s dead, then I got no reason to live.
Ross: Uh, Joey... Omnipotent.
Joey: You are? Ross, I'm sorry.

Loved how Ross's wife was a lesbian.

Why did it age so poorly? Was a mega hit back in the day. Part of it for mine has to do with the repetitive nature of the characters punchlines. Phoebe says random thing, Chandler makes sarcastic comment, Ross has a whinge. The character dimensions needed to change a bit while the show was on.

The lack of side characters also hurt the show too in the long run. No Soup Nazi, no Frank Costanzas, nothing but the 5 was too repetitive. Monica and Chandler bunking up also killed the show. It killed off the entire chances of ever introducing side characters and also killed off any changes you could make to the characters themself.

All the best episodes occured before they went all lovey dovey

Monica/Chandler killed Chandler, who was their best character.

Phoebe: Chandler Bing, that's an unusual name
Chandler: You should meet my dad, Bada.

There were only two relationships
Rachel/Ross
Chandler/Monica
Plenty of flirting but that's all it amounted to.

Wasnt Joey and Rachel in a "sort of" relationship for a while.

Iirc, thats when the show completely and utterly went downhill, was a ridiculous storyline.

Dont know why people say it aged poorly, it has probably aged better than most other sitcoms. Not sure people even know what "aged poorly" means because Friends definetly has not. I am guessing people who are saying that are people who didnt like it to start with anyway.

Repetitve is not always a bad thing though, a show like Seinfeld was one of the most repetitve and predictable shows i have ever seen yet people love that.

It also had plenty of side characters, they came and went but there were still plenty of them.

Yup I still watch it regularly and enjoy it as much as I did back then.

Not as many as Seinfeld but there were quite a few. Some off the top of my head..

Phoebes bird killing cop boyfriend
Gunther
Janice "oh...my...god" Litman Goralnik
Mike
Phoebes nerdy boyfriend
Russ

Jack Gellar is great too, there are plenty more "side characters" who have been around on the show like the main characters boyfriend/girlfriend over time who have all been around for atleast 6 or 7 episodes each, there are about a dozen of them. Mr Treeger and Mr Heckles, Phoebes brother Frank, Estelle... There are plenty of them. Im not saying they have the most but it certainly wasn't like they had a shortage of them
