The game is a classic

Thread needs a bump. Finally getting some good results in my shitty sauber. After finishing anywhere from 21st to 14th, managed to get 8th at Baku and get some points after starting near the back of the grid (bloody Rosberg DRS'd me right on the line to steal 7th).

Then started 18th at Red Bull Ring. Race started in the wet so I cranked up the downforce and went hard on the inters, knowing that the rain wouldn't last long. I managed to get up to 6th as I was able to get a sharper turn and earlier acceleration than the AI cars coming out of the tighter corners. On to the softs and held off Kvyat until he damaged his wing trying to get past me. Onto Supers for the last stint and Hulkenberg up my date the whole way. He got past me with 5 laps to go. I nearly got him back with DRS with 3 laps to go but had to bail out and slipped back from him. Then just concentrated like buggery to ensure I was within DRS range on the last lap. Just got close enough to use it down the pit straight, which had me right on his ass. Nearly snuck through on the inside into T2 but he held on. Then DRS'd down the back straight and out braked him into T3 to finish 6th. Genuine fist pumps were had.

**** the high speed tracks make a big difference in the Sauber. I wasn't competitive in the slightest at Monaco and Canada, the tight corners just had my car bogging down big time and the other cars would just pull away from me. Baku and the RBR however? Soooooooo much better.

This game must be good as I bought BF1 and have only played a few games as I keep getting sucked into doing another GP in career.

**** sounds rad. And the price should drop for Christmas yeah?
Yep - if you don't care about the driver lineups being out of date, will absolutely be worth picking it up over Christmas.

Thread needs another bump so I can vent my raging

Hungarian GP and I started 16th on the grid. My goals were to finish 14th or higher and above Magnusson and Wehrlein. Race started in heavy rain. Chaos at the first corner saw 4 cars retired, I managed to get around the outside of most of the carnage and was up to 13th, one behind Wehrlein. Stayed there on his tail for 7 or 8 laps. Rain started to lighten up. Luckily, I'd had the foresight to set my next tire to Inters, as just as I was coming up to the pit lane, I got the call on the radio that it was time to change strategy. I swerved into the pit lane at the last minute and didn't have time to accept their strategy change, but thankfully got the Inters anyway. Out I go and manage to undercut a bunch of cars who had already passed the pits when the Inter call went out and I was up into 9th behind Massa and Guitierrez, with Vettel on my ass. Vettel kept having cracks at me, but I managed to hold him out. Guitierrez was holding Massa and everyone else up though. A couple of times I nearly managed to get past Massa but had to bail out.

Finally, Massa got past him and then I managed to get a flying run at him up the hill into T5 & T6 and squeezed around the outside. Adrenaline flowing now, I set about staying with Massa and building a gap on Vettel while he was stuck behind guitierrez. With 13 laps to go (50% distance), the rain had just about stopped and the track was starting to dry out. Out comes the Safety Car, and I decide to chance it and pit for softs before I get the call that the track was dry enough for slicks. I was the first one in and one or two cars followed behind me.

BANG, my call was spot on and out I come and the track is dry enough for the softs and I undercut the field while they're stuck behind the safety car. They all pit at the end of that lap and the SC was far enough ahead that I could do the whole lap flat out. Noticed all the dots in the pits as I came round the bend onto the pit straight, get around a couple coming out of the pits and as I hit T1, I'm up to 4th. Couldn't have nailed the race strategy better if I tried.

A few laps behind the safety car and I'm thinking "the cars at this end of the field are going to be faster than me in the dry, but I should be able to hold enough of them at bay to finish in the points at least". SC goes in and off we go. Within a couple of laps Kvyat gets past me and I drop to sixth. No big deal I think. Another couple of laps, and with 8 to go, another car squeezes past me. It's ****ing Guitierrez again. He must have been one of the cars to come in to the pits with me, as he was slow as **** in the wet.

Turns out he is still slow in the dry on the same section I got past him in the wet. I get right on his ass coming up the hill into T5 & T6 again. I must have a bit more downforce, as I get a tighter turn than him into T6 and my momentum carries me up alongside him coming up to the long T7. No worries I think, I'll just hold the outside line around the bend and I'll still be a fair chance to get past him.

I was wrong.

The dirty bastard gives me no room and gives me a hard tire bump into the wall. I decide to take the lightweight option and use the flashback, as I wasn't having my awesome race ruined by that bullshit. As I was flat out and right on the edge coming up into T6, I decide to wait until I pulled alongside him until I triggered the flashback, as I was worried the wheel wouldn't be perfectly aligned and even the slightest wiggle might have caused me to come undone. I try once again to get around him, same result. Now, because I left it so late to trigger the flashback, I have very little time to do anything, so I try it again, and this time I just jam the brake as I trigger it so that he doesn't take me out. It works, except then Vettel behind me smashes me into the wall. I try the flashback again, this time, there is no time to do anything but watch Guitierrez take me out and try to manipulate my car as best I can so as to minimize the damage. I end up with moderate front wing damage and the remaining cars all get around me. I end up pitting and taking a new wing and super softs and just rage flying around the track for the last 7 laps. Knocked about 11 seconds off the gap, but to no avail, I end up 17th, one spot behind ****ing Magnusson.

I haven't gone to bed that angry in a looooooooooooooooooooooong time :(

Sorry for the long vent, but I needed to get it out there to start the healing process

That made for awesome reading! We've all been there though.

Might have a crack at this tonight. We rarely have the wheel set up because it's ugly and get's in the way and I don't use the controller to play very often.

Haha, I keep getting told off for not putting mine fully away. Rather than folding it all up and packing it away, I've just been leaving it in the corner of the theatre room as I can't be bothered moving it around.

Was the first time I'd played it in a couple of weeks. Should have known the race couldn't go THAT perfectly without a hiccup :D

Haha that's what I normally try and get away with! Sneak it down the side of the couch haha. Truth be told it's not that bad to move, more an inconvenience. Because I don't see it, it's an out of sight, out of mind thing.

I've got the next two days off so I'll be giving it a crack for the first time since Bathurst haha. (Which somehow was over a month ago!)

The game obviously sensed my distress from the previous night, as last night it let me finish 4th after starting 18th in the German gp. Had a lengthy session of light rain the middle of the Race, which I managed to do with 1 set of inters, while everyone else seemed to use two sets. Tire wear was nearly at 70%, and then I took a chance again, pitting for the super soft a lap before most other cars as it started it to dry up. Next thing I know I'm in 3rd. Bloody ricciardo got me with drs on the last lap to rob me of the podium.

Anyone else notice how cautious the AI is early in the race? Within a few laps, I'd gone from 18th to 8th as they just stayed in a conga line, slowing down far earlier than you normally would for corners. I was able to fly down the inside quite regularly (cleanly, for the most part)

No better feeling in this game than nailing your pit strategy and performing an undercut.
Got my first ever podium (Manor, Legend Difficulty, 50% Race Distance) at Austria. Qualified 16th but have found i'm more competitive with race pace, and defending in race conditions.
Most cars seemed to be going for a 3 stop race. I started on the Softs, and the plan was to try and do 2 stops and go SS, SS to finish the race. Got a beautiful start off the line (i seem to be quite good at these manual race starts, or everyone else is poor) and was up to 9th after Turn 2. There was a safety car on the first lap and some cars chose to pit, which put me up into 5th, and also helped with tyre management.

Most of the cars around me were in the top 10 qualifying from the day before, so most were on the supersoft or ultrasoft tyre, and lapping considerably quicker. I could get good exits out of Turns 1 and 2 which helped me defend my Manor from guys like Hamilton/Vettell/Verstappen who were trying to pass. Eventually these guys went into the pits, and I was leading the race on my set of softs, which at this stage had about 50% wear. Lap times were really starting to fall away (was doing 1.14's and everyone else was doing 1.12's) and just as I got to the pit window there was a virtual safety car called out, so I quickly banked into the pits and the VSC ended just as they had fit my tyres on.

I came out of the pitstop in 7th so had made up a couple of places from the cars that had now all pitted. It seems as though I was one of the only cars running the 2 stop strategy. More importantly I had run the longest stint on the softs, and had the ability to really thrash the following sets of supersofts. I actually had the pace to catch Button (McLaren Honda have improved their car in career mode) and made a move stick into Turn 2 (late braking) to move up to P6. All the cars came into the pits for their second stop, but I still had tyres with only 20% wear on them so I raced hard from the front. Eventually came the Pit window, which meant I had about 10 laps on the final set of supersofts. I came out of the pits in 5th, which would have been my highest finish thus far.

About 2 laps into my stint on the supersofts, I noticed the conditions getting a bit more overcast, and the engineer saying that rain was a few minutes away. At this stage I was about 10 seconds away from a group of drivers in P3 and P4. I waited a lap and sure enough light rain appeared. I decided to box onto Inters without really knowing if the rain was going to be heavy or not. I came out of the Pits in P8 but was the only car on the intermediate tyre. My first few sectors I was slower than all the other cars, but the rain became heavier. All of a sudden my sector times were a good second or two better than the group out in P3 and P4. A lap later pretty much all the drivers came into the Pits to put on the intermediate tyres. I had undercut up to P3 by taking the gamble on the green tyres.

The driver in P2 (Rosberg) was still on slicks, and I had about a 15 second gap to him. He came in and pitted the next lap and I came out a good 5 seconds ahead of him in 2nd position. Bottas was in P1 and seemed to be caught in traffic. I had about 2 laps left in the race to try and close the gap. I got the gap down to about 1 second, but DRS was disabled because of the rain. In the end I had to settle for second position, but handed Manor their first ever podium mainly down to a brilliant race strategy.

Undecided as to whether or not I should stick with Manor and try and make them a championship winning car, or jump to a Mercedes/Red Bull when possible

And I thought my race summaries were long :D

Good read mate. It seems you're finding the same as me, from Austria onwards I've been threatening the podium

i need to get back into this. Have been playing BF1 for the last 3 weeks and had a go at F1 multiplayer and im sloooowwww.

Picko we need to start racing each other again :)

I've got some set ups now and know a lot more of the tracks, so hopefully I'm a bit more competitive!!

Maybe I've just been lucky, but the last 4 or 5 races the game always seems to generate a SC or a weather change to give you an opportunity to undercut. I'm not complaining, as eagle said above, it's a great feeling when you fly down the pit straight, see all the dots in the pits and Jump up a few spots. I'm more curious if everyone is finding the same, especially once your car (if you started in a crap team) starts to be competitive

i havent done career mode in about a month. Sucked a bit not getting an offer from one of the big teams considering i won the title with Renault. From memory i didnt have many rain affected races at all in season 1 of mycareer mode.

Hmm my definition of undercut seems to differ from the definition here. what is the meaning of undercut in f1?

Means you pit before someone in front of you, with the aim of coming out on fresher tyres and being fast enough so, that when they pit later on, you overtake them before they get back out
