7.10pm, Saturday April 7, 2011, AAMI Stadium

Last time we met: Western Bulldogs 14.16.100 def Adelaide Crows 10.10.70, round 13, 2011 at Etihad Stadium

Possible Line-up:
B Murphy, Lake, Addison
HB Hargrave, Markovic, Wood
C Cross, Smith, Griffen
HF Giansiracusa, Jones, Cooney
F Dickson, Roughead, Higgins
Foll Minson, Boyd, Picken
Inter (from): Cordy, Djerrkura, Wallis, Liberatore, Dahlhaus, Panos, Grant, Sherman

Bulldogs Preview: This week the Dogs travel to Adelaide for what looks like a tough assignment against the Crows. The Bulldogs looked impressive at times against West Coast, but were outplayed all around the ground and fell away badly towards the end of the game. Adelaide had an outstanding preseason, beating West Coast in a home grand final, but are yet to be tested in the real stuff after smashing Gold Coast in round 1.

At The Selectors Table: Round 1 gave us a good indication of where several players are at, some positive and some negative. Howard at this stage is the only definite out after picking up a knee injury which will keep him on the sidelines for 2-4 weeks. The biggest bullet would be pointed at Grant’s head after coming on as a substitute in the 3rd quarter but failing to make a strong impact, albeit at a difficult time. Names next in line would be Addison, Wallis, Roughead and Dickson but don’t expect a large turnover in players. Markovic was soundly beaten by Kennedy, but is needed for size and will get another shot. Griffen will return if his hand injury has healed, whilst Cordy and Djerrkura both impressed for Williamstown. Our biggest worry is finding a forward line which can deliver a winning score, which may give Panos his first game. McCartney is unlikely to be making many changes early on, so the lineup should look fairly similar to round 1. Prediction: In: Griffen, Cordy Out: Howard, Grant

The Game: Adelaide are a bit unknown at the minute, following a very strong preseason and easy win in round 1, with many tipping them to challenge for the top 8. Once again, the Bulldogs come up against a tall forwardline in Lynch, Tippett and Walker, the latter two sharing 9 goals between them last week. Our backline will need to bounce back this week after allowing 21 goals through against the Eagles, Markovic and Lake in particular have big tasks again. The midfield will be an interesting battle. Thompson was everywhere against the Suns and will be tagged by Picken. The Bulldogs last week were well serviced by Liberatore, Boyd and Cross however kicking efficiency is a worry as we can’t afford to turn the ball over against Adelaide with Dangerfield, Sloane and Vince lurking to take advantage of a fast break. The Crow’s defence looks their weakest area, and the Dogs once again need that important spark which was provided on the weekend by Dahlhaus and Smith. Much like Tippett, Jones has the ability to find the ball but needs to hurt the opposition when he does, whilst we desperately need straight shooting from Higgins, Giansiracusa and Dickson when they get their chances.

Players to Watch:
Markovic- Badly beaten by Kennedy last week. Will take one of Tippett or Walker who are in good form, the Bulldogs cannot afford them to get on top of him.
Dahlhaus- Brilliant game last week, looks to be so important across half forward and needs to back up. Delivery into the forward line is so important and he is central to that.
Picken- Kept Kerr to just 7 touches against West Coast. Big game against Thompson needed, which will go along way towards deciding the result of the match.

Prediction: The experts will be tipping Adelaide at home, but I don’t expect the game to be so one sided. If Picken can get on top of Thompson, the Dogs should win the midfield battle. Once again, if our forwards and mids find ways to goal, we are a big chance. Western Bulldogs by 11 points.

When: 7.10pm, Saturday April 7, 2011, AAMI Stadium
Last 5 at AAMI: 2006 - Adelaide 132-55, 2007 - Adelaide 107-73, 2008 - Adelaide 76-67, 2009 - Doggies 118-86, 2010 - Doggies 61-53.

Last time we met: Western Bulldogs 14.16.100 def Adelaide Crows 10.10.70, round 13, 2011 at Etihad Stadium.

Bulldogs - Possible Line-up:
B Murphy, Lake, Addison
HB Hargrave, Markovic, Wood
C Cross, Smith, Griffen
HF Giansiracusa, Jones, Cooney
F Dickson, Roughead, Higgins
Foll Minson, Boyd, Picken
Interchange: Wallis, Liberatore, Dahlhaus,
Sub: Sherman

Adelaide Possible Lineup:
B: Talia, Rutten, Doughty
HB: Reilly, Otten, Stiffy
C: Douglas, Danger, Mackay
HF: Sloane, Lynch, Vince
FF: Walker, Tippett, Porps
Foll: Jacobs, Thompson,VB
Interchange: Petrenko, Smith, Callinan
Sub: Shaw
Emergencies: Wright, Jaensch, Kerridge

*After the Stevens concussion issues, I think the club will be very careful with Hendo and give him a week or two off... I think due to the small/midsized forwards of the doggies - Shaw will be brought in to help provide another defensive option.

Key Matchups:

Tippett/Lynch/Walker v Markovic/Lake/Murphy:
This proves to be Adelaide's big advantage in this Saturday's matchup. Watching Markovic have 7 kicked on him by Kennedy means that Adelaide will try to isolate him 1on1 vs Tippett or Walker. Murphy will probably go to Lynch and Lake to Walker with both of these forward being told to leave take their opponent away from Tippet & Markovic matchup. With Markovic's confidence down and Tippo being in the form he is - we could have a Dawson V Rocca style matchup.

Advantage: Adelaide

Jacobs v Minson, Thompson v Boyd, Vince V Cross, Van Berlo v Cooney, Sloane v Griffen, Danger V Libba, Smith V Wallis, Mackay V Picken...

This is where the game will be won and lost... Both teams have very similar midfields with one elite mid (thommo v boyd), a couple of very good mids in (Cross, Griffen, Cooney / VB,Vince, Sloane) - slight advantage WB) and some very promising young and emerging talent (Danger&Smith v Wallis/Libba) slight advantage Adelaide... The ruck battle is fairly evenly poised with Minson being underrated in my opinion and I think the midfields will come out relatively even, meaning the advantage will go to the side who uses it better..

Advantage: Nobody

Gia / Dahlhaus / Higgins / Smith V Johncock / Doughty / Otten

I think tall forwards are a big weakness for the Doggies and Roughead & Jones will be covered by Rutten and Talia - meaning we need to shut down the doggies small forwards to win. In the game against West Coast - the Doggies smalls kicked 9 of their 12 goals.

Advantage: Doggies

Bulldogs Players to Watch:
Cooney - Typically does very well against us... Hasn't looked 100% since knee injuries have derailed him... Is this the game he comes back to his elite best?
Dahlhaus- Small forwards typically hurt us and Dahlhaus is in very good form. The little cult figure could do some damage providing Jacobs doesnt mistake him for a blade of grass and step on him.
Smith- Who the hell is this kid? Absolutely blitzed it in the first quarter kicking 4 goals before suffering from 'entire body cramps' and having to be subbed at half time. Has the x factor and could kick a bag very quickly.

Adelaide Players to Watch:
Porps: Many of the posters on this board were very unhappy with Porps Rd 1 performance. He is immensely talented and after spending 18 months between actual AFL games can be expected to a bit behind the pace... The question is when will it all click - lets hope rd 2.
Callinan: This guy has made me eat some serious humble pie over the past 6 weeks... Has not put a foot wrong over preseason, kicked 2.4 (with 2 posters) against GC and is returning to his beloved AAMI stadium where he can kick a goal from anywhere.
Walker: Am amazed that he gets nowhere near the press that guys like Hurley get! If there was a 21year old forward who played 46 games for a victorian club and kicked 95 goals with the ability to kick one from 65 metres out - he would be the messiah (not a very naughty boy, like he is to some on this board).... If he puts a full game together he could kick 10.

Overall:

With the Crows being in very good form over the past 3 weeks and playing this one at home in front of over 45,000 people on a Saturday night we are deservedly the early favourites. This battle will be decided by who gets first use of the pill out of the middle.. If the two midfields negate themselves it will come down to whether the Crows talls or Bulldogs smalls can be more efficient and kick a winning score.

Prediction: Crows 16.11 - 107 over the Doggies 12.13 - 85.

Goals: Walker 4, Tippet 3, Callinan 3, Porps 2, Vince 1, Thompson 1, Danger 1, Mackay 1
Goals: Gia 4, Dahlhaus 3, Higgins 2, Jones 1, Roughhead 1, Murphy 1

Best: Sloane, Thompson, Vince, Reilly, Walker, Johncock
Best: Cooney, Griffen, Gia, Dahlhaus, Cross, Wallis.

We really missed Griff's run and carry.

I agree with your INS/OUTS however Grant is as I said in the selectors table thread a little unlucky. Didn't do much with his brief time on field however did not have much time to establish himself.

Not the best choice for a Sub IMO, wish they would scrap that rule.

I highly doubt Picken will play on Thompson, he is not really a taggable player much like Boyd as he works so much on the inside and his dispoal can be pretty iffy, Picken would be more likely to play on Dangerfield who can be easily shut out of game by a strong tag and can be damaging if left free, Boyd nearly always goes HH with Thompson and they both rack up 30-40 touches for the day.

Grant must stay in and not as sub (that was a stupid stupid move, sub must be a midfielder to help rotations when game opens up) to provide a target up forward alongside Jones, I would be happy with Cordy and Griffen in for Howard and Roughead but I doubt Roughead will be dropped despite the fact he is in side to play as a 75% forward and is completly useless in the role, it's Hudson and Minson all over again as Minson and Roughead are both #1 ruckman where as Cordy is tailormade for the #2 ruckman role and filling gaps forward and back as needed.

Hopefully Markovic has a better go as he should be more suited to Tippett than Kennedy as Tippett is a contested marking forward rather than on the lead.

Ins: Griffen , Cordy

Out: Howard, Wallis

Grant to start on the field and dickson gets the vest

Hmm yeah you might be right on that one. I thought Picken took him last year but on further recollection I think he went to Bernie Vince. I'm not sold on tagging Dangerfield yet though, he has moments but not sure if he is damaging enough to warrant it. We will see.

I hope that Grant does stay in and get given a full game this week, however I think the selectors will see that we need changes up forward, and given his game on Sunday, he has got to be most likely to go. For me, ideally wed have Grant starting with Dickson sub, and get Cordy in there whether at the expense of Roughead or not.

Not confident for this one, I think Adelaide are a much improved side and they're due for a win over us.

I will be AAMI for the game though, hoping it's worth the trip. Probably not though.

At Etihad the chances are realistic. At AMMI park its a different kettle of fish

Thompson will be playing his 200th this week but I don't think those milestones are as big a factor as people make out. It's round 2 and all 44 players should be having a red hot go.

A bigger issue for us is whether our host of young players (half the side have played less than 50 games) can run out the game against a slightly more seasoned Adelaide side.

I agree with the INs (Griffen and Cordy) but only if Griff is 100% right. If there's the slightest doubt we should bring in Djerrkura instead. I originally thought the outs should be Howard and Grant but on watching the replay I thought Grant provided a bit of spark and variety in the 30-odd minutes he was on the ground. Could have easily had 2 goals. Maybe Wallis would be the one to be omitted even though he had an OK match. Dickson as an older body should stay stay in and be given a chance to find his feet in AFL. He'll improve.

Wood Lake Addison
Shaggy Markovic Murphy
Cross Smith Griffen
Dalhaus Jones Cooney
Higgins Roughead Gia

Minson Boyd Picken

Libba, Grant, Dickson | Sherman/Tutt/DJ

Meaning

IN: Griffen, Sherman/Tutt/DJ
OUT: Howard, Wallis

Adelaide are having the sort of start to the season that Essendon did last year, and are playing a lot better than people rated them pre-season. Whether they can sustain that to make finals is another question, but we have to play them now when they're red-hot, and also being in Adelaide, we could be in for some pain. I'm looking for the following from the dogs.

1. Same contested ball and clearance effort as against West Coast

2. Better team defence, Wood, Hargrave, Addison etc getting to the contest and going 3rd man up to help out Marko. Need this for the entire game, only got it sporadically after quarter time on Sunday

3. Set up differently to prevent easy take-aways at centre clearances. This killed us on the weekend.

I think the above is achievable in a week (fixing our forward line is a bit more problematic...) and will give me confidence we are heading in the right direction.

I'll take a 4 goal loss.

Everyone seems to be taking a much more pessimistic approach to this game then last week, where the majority were tipping us. Adelaide to me are a great unknown, its too hard to base were they're at on their last few games. They finished off 2011 quite poorly, and whilst they do look to have improved, I don't understand why so many were tipping us to knock off a top 4 team but nobody rates us against the Crows. Obviously being in Adelaide will make it a little harder, but we have a shot.

Yes we fell away against the Eagles, but I think we looked quite good for 2 and a half quarters, even whilst getting smashed in defence and with a fair few having quiet games. Our forward line was always going to be a problem, but if we can get on top of Walker and Tippett then I don't see why we wouldn't be in with a huge chance. I believe we will win in the midfield, 50-50 in our foward line and similar in defence. I rate us much more likely against Adelaide than West Coast.

Tippet and Walker are on fire and agree if we can get on top of them then we have a good crack at it.

Griffen should help in the middle as we done well against west coast undermanned. Boyd to handball a few more rather then kick and use the wings more often (would like to see Dahlhaus on 1 side and Tutt on the other, if fit)

Boyd vs Thompson head to head! Cant wait! My mouth is already drooling!!

I can't split this one.

I reckon our forwards have the advantage over your defenders.

But I also reckon your midfield has an advantage over ours.

Our defence might have the slight advantage, but given you guys have a small forward line, and we really only have johncock... who knows? Reilly also, somehow, is in great form.

So... I predict the inside 50's will be very close. Scoring shots also. I think it's going to be a matter of kicking straight, and that will be all...

Adelaide in red hot form, dispatched WC easily in the NAB cup. Some people say NAB doesnt mean anything but from what I seen WC's preseason form was almost the same as their round 1 effort against us which doesnt bode well.

Adelaide by 75 points.

If I see solid performances from our youth than I will be a very content man.

First of all, great write-up Sentinel :thumbsu:

Obviously shutting down Walker and Tippett is vital. If Markovic and Lake struggle then we are in trouble. Cordy down back could be handy, assuming he will be recalled after a strong VFL showing.

Hopefully Jones will find it easier against the Crows backline.

I think we should have the upper hand in the ruck stocks with Minson/Roughead. Jacobs was struggling I thought against the Suns... Whilst Will isn't the most mobile/athletic big man going around, he won't be completely dominated like he was last week.

Will be a tough ask for us, Van Berlo/Vince/Sloan/Dangerfield are Rolls Royce movers of the ball, with some great forwards on the end of it.

I reckon if we can stay within 4 or 5 goals we've done well.

Tippett & Walker were keys for us last week but TBH had little to no opposition - especially in the first quarter. I'd expect Lake & Markovic to be a much more difficult match-up and if that's the case we'll have to work a lot harder for our goals.

At the other end of the ground our key defenders (aside from Rutten) and your key forwards are pretty inexperienced and not yet consistent players at this level. Which side gets on top here could make all the difference. I also imagine you'd put a stopping small forward on Johncock who is responsible for a lot of our defensive rebound.

I don't think the Crows have anywhere near proved themselves yet as the 'real deal' in terms of being a top 8 contender so I expect this will be a pretty tough hit-out for both sides and a result within five goals either way.

Good luck!

Sorry to invade

But you guys need to send Picken to Danger and Boyd to go H2H with ST. Also Griffen was one of your best clearance, contested players in NAB he needs to go into the guts, however if only one spot is open due to Picken and Boyd already being in there than i reckon Libba and have Griffen off a wing.

What you guys want to try and do is get NVB into the guts on Griffen, allowing him to sit on him on a wing is an advantage to the crows. So if he goes to Griffen send him right in the thick of things, he will throw NVB around.

Its always hard to kick a score against the eagles.

Higgins, Gia, Grant (when in form), roughead, L.Jones, Dickson, Dalhaus have the ability to kick a score, also Griffen and Cooney are good for 2-3 between them.

Thanks for your thoughts, a few have echoed the same thoughts to give Boyd/Thompson h2h and Picken to Dangerfield.

You're correct in that we're much better side with Griffs clearance work and run & carry.

I think we should have the upper hand in the ruck stocks with Minson/Roughead. Jacobs was struggling I thought against the Suns... Whilst Will isn't the most mobile/athletic big man going around, he won't be completely dominated like he was last week.

What makes you say that? I thought Jacobs was easily one of our better players. Finished the game with 28HOs and 18 disposals. Tough to get struggling out of that.

I reckon you guys probably have the advantage in the midfield, but that won't be because our rucking lets us down.
