Freo's $30m Dream Home

Fremantle want to establish a $30 million training and administration facility within five years as part of a redevelopment of historic Fremantle Oval.

The redevelopment would create a mixed-use community facility which would also incorporate space for South Fremantle Football Club and University of Notre Dame.

The ambitious plan, which hinges on the Department of Lands approving a fresh use for the Stan Reilly Centre which is next to the ground on the south side, would incorporate part of the club's existing administration and training centre built 11 years ago.

The City of Fremantle recommended last month that the Department of Lands approve the site's new use.

The City, South Fremantle, the Department of Sport and Recreation and the AFL have also been involved in the club's planning for the development which would more than double the size of the Dockers' existing presence at its spiritual home to about 7500sq m.

The Dockers investigated sites at Murdoch University and within the City of Cockburn in case they were unable to redevelop the ground.

Chief executive Steve Rosich said the Dockers would continue to investigate a site in Cockburn's Central West as a back-up training venue, or a site for training facilities, if the club was unable to proceed with its plans for Fremantle Oval.

"Fremantle Oval is our current and spiritual home," he said.

"However, the significance and complexity of this project, including the limitations of the current site and the significant costs involved, dictate that we should continue to conduct due diligence on alternative sites while progressing the master plan for the Fremantle Oval precinct.

"This due-diligence process will continue through to at least the start of the 2012 football season and will include separate and ongoing discussions between the club and the City of Fremantle, and the club and the City of Cockburn."

But Rosich said the Dockers would always retain a presence at Fremantle Oval regardless of where their training and administration was based.

The Fremantle Oval master plan includes:

·Retention of the heritage-listed Victoria Pavilion.

·A main building on the ground's southern wing which would house the Dockers and South Fremantle, albeit in separate areas.

·The University of Notre Dame's proposed health sciences faculty.

·A large indoor training facility.

·A function centre.

Rosich said the club was quietly confident the master plan would go ahead.

"The club component of the development will be in the order of $30 million with a funding plan to be finalised early next year," he said.

It is understood the Dockers plan to raise most of the money.

Contributions would come from government and the AFL.

"We will have a better idea of a completion date in and around April 2012 but we would be seeking a finished development by 2016 or 2017," he said.

Rosich said the Dockers were pleased with the progress on the master plan, which they had been working on for more than a year.

"The City Of Fremantle recommended to the State Government Department of Lands that it approve the club's proposed use of the Stan Reilly site post 2012," he said. "Approval would enable the master plan, which details the proposed redevelopment of the Stan Reilly site integrated with new facilities at Fremantle Oval, to be activated.

"The community integration and use of the site will be greatly enhanced under the master plan, which will incorporate modern facilities for Fremantle Dockers members."

Jeers to those who assumed this was last on the boards 'to do' list behind dropping our identity. Just because the papers aren't included in every step of the process - doesn't mean things aren't neccesarily happening.

The truth is self evident Nickos. The rebranding is done and the new facilities are still a long way off.

Even through rose coloured glasses you should be able to see that the board's focus has been distracted by peripheral issues.

Seems a long way away though really, this facility should have been sorted 2-3 years ago and been up and running now or in 1-2 years........ not in 5 years.

This.

Sounds like Steve has learnt a thing or two from American NFL from 5-15 years ago or so. (and other sports to some degree). "Give us our building or we take our business elsewhere" type mentality. Well maybe not quite as bullying as that, but on those lines ... fair enough too in this case.

Would be a real shame if the Club aren't able to do this at Freo Oval. Done right it would hold it's heritage value and feel, enhance the club and the city of Fremantle itself and cement Freo in Freo for years to come.

Personally really like the mention that Notre Dame would have their health sciences program in the facility as well. Should be able to leverage/test new techniques and implement the ones that work.

Whatever helps you sleep at night matey, yeah yeah I know - same goes and all that.. :)

About time.

I remember when Lyon was asked to assess Fremantle´s facilities by a reporter soon after he joined us. His answer was "they are adequate". I.e. he wasn´t overly impressed by them and this is coming from the previous coach of perenial financial battler, St Kilda.

Most clubs in Melbourne now have much better facilities than Fremantle owing to many of them taking this quasi community approach, teaming up with other organisations and then getting stackloads of money off the Government for their "community development". Heck, even North Melbourne´s facilities are probably better than ours now. And Freo are meant to be one of the financial powerhouses of the AFL....

Good news lets hope we get it sooner rather than later, but at least they're doing something haven't heard the eagles announce any new facilities?

I support the club, irrespective of who's running it. The clubs in the black (again) not like 9 others, new facilities are on their way, we have had a solid list strategy in place for the last 3 years which on paper looks like a good base for 2012-2016, the majority of clubs will/have commenced a rebuild next year in the 2012 "super draft " while we top up in the free trade market with the cash we have. We don't have a flag yet but seems like the club is doing everything in its power to get one. It's confusing how people can moan so much about the club, why don't you ask a Roos/port/lions/bulldogs/saints supporters if they think Freos administration runs ok?

That's because they're waiting for the stadium issue to get sorted before they commit money to anything.

Once it is they're going to build facilities better than James f**king Cameron could create with CGI.

That was the key to a lot of WCE's success. Getting them involved with the UWA exercise phys mob.

My sis did her med degree at Notre Dame - I'm not certain they will be good for FFC :P * personal opinion only to any Notre Dame staff reading this

I see. But it may at least link us to another Hobbit, this one formerly known as Rudy, and complete the club trifecta.

City backs Dockers' bid for training facility
28/Dec/2011
By Jessica Nico, Fremantle-Cockburn Gazette

Comments:
THE City of Fremantle has backed a proposal from the Fremantle Football Club to establish a $30 million training facility.

The five-year project would involve the development of a main building on the southern wing of Fremantle Oval that would house both the Dockers and the South Fremantle football clubs in separate areas, a health science faculty for the University of Notre Dame, an indoor training venue and a function centre.

The heritage-listed Victoria Pavilion would be retained.

The decision requires the Department of Lands to approve a new use for the Stan Reilly Centre, next to the ground, and would include the club’s existing training and administration centres.

The Dockers have also been investigating back-up sites in Cockburn and Murdoch should they be unable to develop the ground.

City of Fremantle chief executive Graeme Mackenzie said the proposal could be an important benefit for the city.

“The City recognises the importance of having the Fremantle Football Club in Fremantle, rather than at a new stadium somewhere else in Perth,” he said.

“The City also understands that an AFL club needs modern facilities to compete at the highest level and hopefully bring the premiership to Fremantle.”

Last year, Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt and Mr Mackenzie visited Melbourne to inspect facilities at other AFL clubs’ grounds.

“The really exciting part of where this project is leading, is the opportunity to take a now disused facility adjacent to Fremantle Oval and provide not only football facilities that meet modern needs, but also provide both dedicated and shared use community facilities within a development,” Mr Mackenzie said.

“Such a development will also bring the football club closer to the community.”

The City of Fremantle will continue to work with the Department of Lands and the Fremantle Football Club to keep the project progressing.

True but Subi is not exactly a gold standard and plans have only just been completed for the new stadium. Subi has been considered outdated for a while now.

Could not agree more Yakka, but it is not as it those that run the AFL are hanging around Subi with the General Public. Not to mention that their care factor for W.A. is WAY down the listof priorities for them.

Subi needs an upgrade, W.A. needs a new stadium and Freo oval should also get an upgrade in facilities. Will be tough to get the $$$ when they are pouring money into GWS and the Gold Coast though. :(

Just wait til 2013 when the ALP is shit scared of losing their Freo Seat. The Libs will counter. They'll be pork barrelling overflowing. I'll bet we get the development largely paid for.
