Fallout: 2022

After Saturday we will have another 8 loss in row, we had a 9 loss run earlier in the season. Must be quite rare to have such records in the one season. I'm confident if things don't turn around next season Simpson will get sacked, we can't have a run of 15 losses in a row and fans not turning up to games rightly so.

I'm not too optimistic about next year already, giving contracts to the older bridgade needs to reach a point I feel that we can't re-sign all of Naitnaui, Redden, Hurn. I just don't see the point; we need to start developing players for those positions NOW, not in two seasons time. NN I can understand as we are literally starved for talent in that department, he just needs to get fit and work harder over pre-season.

We'll get a much softer draw next season so there is a slight opening for improvement although I wouldn't rate our draw this season as particularly tough having avoided long trips to N.T, NSW, TAS. Only bad one is this weekend.

Gee this is depressing & something I haven't realised at it's been happening.

In our 36 year history we've had 7 streaks of 7 losses or more, but 3 of those streaks have happened just in the last 25 games.
Since Hurn's 300th in Round 20, 2021 we've gone L7, W1, L9, W1, L7*.

My prediction...We retain Tom Joyce and send him over to Germany where engineers will install some new robotic legs. He will dominate, picking up 3 brownlow votes a game until WW3 breaks out and the price of uranium goes up meaning we can no longer afford to power his legs under the soft cap. Inevitably, a bedsore will put a line through his season.

maybe getting someone finally to 300 has cursed us.

Curse won't be broken until we either get 300 guys to 300 or 1 guy to 400.

We need to get 300 guys to 1 game, and it’ll all be solved.

Clubs that we could look to as a guide :

Geelong
Sydney
Richmond (post 2016)
Brisbane (Medicos)

The end

I was looking forward to one of our players reaching 300 games for years.

It used to frustrate me that we never had one.

But ever since we've been crapola so hopefully our next 300 gamer can reach the milestone in better times.

Seems there’s a bit of a queue forming to take over chairmanship of the board with Russell Gibbs due to retire, including what would be a first female leader.

Pity I don’t read the west

Melbourne and Richmond both had female Presidents overseeing their premierships, so Elizabeth Gaines it is

Yeah but what's her contested game like?

At least there’s some on the board not wanting to maintain the status quo

The consultant employed by West Coast to assist in the search for their next chairperson has pledged a “totally dispassionate and independent” process as FMG boss Elizabeth Gaines and former State Treasurer Ben Wyatt loom as potential candidates.

Sources believe the race for the chairpersons role could become a two or even three-person race with Gaines and Wyatt joining the previously fancied Paul Fitzpatrick in the running to succeed incumbent Russell Gibbs.

The club has turned to an often-used consultant Lloyd Smith of Gerard Daniels who says on the company website that he is “passionate about AFL and particularly proud of his association with West Coast Eagles in the appointment of key executive coaching roles.”

Smith told The West Australian on Friday it was not his job to tell the Eagles who to appoint: “My job is to be totally dispassionate and independent. That is what I do.”

He confirmed he had assisted the Eagles: “Quite a few times.”

“You are simply looking at people against selection criteria and the requirements of the role and seeing how people meet those expectations,” he said.

That did not mean he would make the decision for the club, he said.

“That is for them to decide. The board decides that, not the consultant. It is the role of the board to look at the candidates and make a decision.”

It had been widely assumed that long-time board member Fitzpatrick would succeed Gibbs.

But sources this week said there was a strong possibility either or both of Wyatt or Gaines would enter the race.

Smith said there were “about 10 to 12 selection criteria” that would help to gauge a candidates ability to hold down the role.

It is understood that candidates would be assessed on their suitability for the role by a checklist of “must haves” “should haves “ and “would like to have” characteristics.

Being able to make the time commitment the role demands is near the top of the list of “must haves”.

Football club experience and a willingness to be one of the club’s public faces are also high priorities.

The Eagles are expected to call for expressions of interest from board members next month with a confidential ballot to follow if there is more than one candidate.

Fitzpatrick, a sports lawyer, the brother of former AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick and a long time Eagles board member, had been seen as the “establishment” candidate.

His appointment would have been seen as a continuation of West Coast’s conservative line on board members and governance.

But there is a push from several board members for a more progressive approach.

Wyatt not only brings significant political clout and government expertise but is also an Indigenous trailblazer. Gaines is one of the State’s most respected female business figures.

The appetite for a fresh look at the club’s leadership has been fuelled by a bleak season in three different competitions.

West Coast collected the wooden spoon in the AFLW season earlier in the year.

They sit at the bottom of the ladder in the WAFL, a win and significant percentage adrift of second-bottom team Perth with just three games remaining and a depleted team to pick from this weekend.

And the AFL team is not clear of wooden spoon territory either with a nightmare road trip to Geelong to finish the season.

North Melbourne are currently last on the ladder some five percentage points adrift of the Eagles but have a winnable game at home against Gold Coast and were buoyed on Friday morning by the news that four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson will join the club on a five-year contract for 2023.

The West Australian attempted to contact Wyatt and Gaines for comment.

Keys

I was half ****ing about when I said we should appoint a female because of the success under a female at Richmond and Melbourne but I’d be all for Elizabeth Gaines getting the role

Strong resume and people don’t get that far in the business world without being more than capable. With an AFLW team now as well it’s a good time to look at bringing in new leadership

So I suppose Mad Monday is coming up, when are the exit interviews? I wonder who might get the chop perhaps with a contract still to run?

We still have 2 WAFL games to play so that complicates things as it’s likely somewhere between 10-15 players will still be playing whilst the rest of the group are done

Honestly not sure how the club plans to deal with it

Gaines is the best candidate. We're West Coast - our chair is always comes from the top end of town (with influence where it counts).

Fitzpatrick is just some lawyer who doesn't seem to have any big time connections. Wyatt would be useful if he was still the treasurer, but he's several years retired and just trying to ride a gravy train of his political career (which was with Labor which automatically gives him a very bad smell).

Gaines is CEO of a big publicly listed company and would be familiar with the top end of town. Lock her in.
