Fantastic Drafting

Am watching the full replays of the U18 carnival games thanks to TradeDraft:

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=782672

Interestingly the commentating team (Pickering, Campbell, Shifter etc) during one of the games did an early Draft prediction:

At that point, half way through the carnival they had:

Lycett at 5 to GC
Gaff at 6 to WCE
Darling at 10 to Melb
Wilson at 14 to Bris

Its amazing how quickly players can fall out of favour...

For the record the top 15 was:

1. Swallow
2. Bennell
3. Day
4. Gorringe
5. Lycett
6. Gaff
7. Polec
8. Harper
9. Cook
10. Darling
11. Atley
12. McCarthy
13. Parker
14. Wilson
15. Pitt

Nice post.:thumbsu:

Now we just need to turn/develop potential into reality.;)

I watched the first quarter of the WA v VM game yesterday and honestly I am still an awe that we got Wilson in the PSD. His kicking alone makes him a star - elite with decision making and execution on either side, short or long. For a team with disposal issues such as WC, he'll be an absolute beauty.

Darling stuck out too, the guy is just a battering ram every time he goes near the ball. The guy definitely doesn't lack for pace either.

Gaff hasn't stood out to me much so far, but I have a sneaking suspicion he'll come to the fore in the second half.

Did anyone else think Wilson looks like he needs a lot of conditioning in that vid? Maybe it's just his body shape but he doesn't look as fit as most of the other boys.

I believe he was well underdone during the carnival due to OP and other injuries during the year.

OP shouldn't be an excuse as to why you can't lift some weights...

Could have .......... before his major hammie injury.:(

It will be interesting to see haw hard and fast Kerr can push himself after this injury. He may need to back off on using explosive pace and dish the ball off quicker by hand or foot instead of trying to burn off opponents and run away from the pack.

OH, and on Bonds 4 types of mids I think there is two more, the mega endurance gut runner which is the Cousins type who can kick and the Houlihan / Dalziell who struggle with their kicking.

Obeanie - I agree. Should have thought about it when I posted the list, although I was basically reporting verbatim a recruiter's concept.

I think in order of importance

-- Good agility or fast with good disposal (Gary Ablett / Stephen Hill)
-- Gut runner with good disposal (Ben Cousins / Robert Harvey)
-- Slow with good disposal (Sam Mitchell / Daniel Rich)
DAYLIGHT
-- Gut runner with poor disposal (Brad Ebert / Tim Houlihan)
-- Good agility or fast with poor disposal (Brett Peake / Pat McGinnity)
DAYLIGHT x 3
-- Slow with poor disposal (Adam Selwood / Matt Priddis)

Whilst there is always room for the odd player whose clearance skills (Priddis) or hardness (Stenglein) can offset their issues of skills or pace, the problem is ensuring the midfield mix is right and not being one dimensional as per WC circa 2009 and 2010.

This raises the question whether moving fwd, recruiters need to be more selective in their draft choices rather than trotting out the old "best available" even for 1st round selections.

I'd say that Shep and Gaff qualify under tiers 1 and 2 of your order of importance list respectively...

Cant argue with this and I guess one could take it further and suggest that Masten when drafted would have been seen as either 1 or 2, and that Shuey was a 1. Add a recognized quality in Kerr to that list and one can see why the WC hierachy are optimistic about the future.

I concur, great drafting. I havent seen enough of Gaff mind you but I really hope he can develop quickly. My only concern is that he is unproven against men whereas Polec has been breaking games apart in the SANFL. Hopefully that decision wont burn us.

I know it's a year away but... who are the eligible prospects for next years draft that possess line breaking capabilities coupled with evasiveness and run & carry? I'd like a few names to look out for next season cos it is still a major deficit in our artillery and, imo, an area that severely needs addressing.

Jager O'Meara. BOG in Great Northern Grand Final in his second league game playing on the wing. Busted the game open with 3 goals of his own and set another couple up in a 30 minute period. Presently at AIS and probably Sydney bound but just the sort of player we need.

The past 12 months of gloom and doomed has now disappeared and everything is rosy again. Gee things change quickly. Not that I am complaining as I think the negativity on here was the worst of any board on BF. But just to balance things a bit where's Geoffe Miles?

my thoughts exactly..with all this good news - is this the year the worm turned..and will we now see a more positive outlook on BF..will we cut the coach and some players some slack now..maybe..maybe not..guess we'll know after a good few rounds..anyway we now seem to have more depth across the field-not just from drafting, but a general realigning or panelbeating of the team - with some real cherries on top..sure GaFF+Darling, but Shuey+sheppard, and who knows maybe masten+swift will come out of sleeper mode this season??

after4 yrs of misery,is there some joy around the corner?
