The Saints would have been the last team i picked him going to, with players such as the Clarke brothers, Fiora, Dal Santo etc, Farren is a link up player, very outside, can run with the ball, but his decision making at times can be terrible, he seems to run & run then panic, can spray a ball pretty bad as well, was really our Sam Power this year.

Saying that, he was a number 4 pick, so Scotty Clayton obviously saw something in him, let's hope he doesn't make you guys pull your hair out as much as he did to us, but, he's worth a shot, has potential, has a big motor, can actually take decent overhead marks with his long arms.

Well, Fizz is on the way out, one Clarke is half dead and the other is only just coming along. So yeah, we need a player or two...

about

Ray was taken by the Bulldogs with pick four in the 2003 NAB AFL Draft and is yet to show his full potential. A ball-magnet as a junior, he has spent four seasons at the Bulldogs without producing at the same level as the Bulldogs would have hoped. After a strong end to 2006, Ray didn't kick on in 2007, not only winning less of the ball himself but also conceding more to his opponents.

Strengths :
- Can run all day, big motor
- Long arms, can take a good overhead mark
- Can run & run, very good link up player
- Finds the ball very well, finds himself in the best positions
- can kick on either foot

Weaknesses :
- Decision making
- silly overhead handballs when in trouble
- can spray the ball

He's not soft either! Was looking great until he got injured in the NAB Cup, seemed to have lost confidence.

If Saints supporters want to see the best of him, go watch the Dogs v Collingwood Elim final in '06, he was awesome that day.

He tries to show the football world that he can kick on either foot...but he clearly can't. Can barely manage clean disposal off his preferred.

But I do like Farren, hope he plays well with the Saints.

Much of the "soft" tag - if I'm picking up on things correctly - stems from his times when he's been injured, or the end of the season during the finals. Well, he's not the only player to look soft when they're injured. And as for the end of the season, it's obvious he'd lost his love for the doggies, and was looking to get away from there - hardly the attitude you need to dive in and die for the club.

If we treat him right, then we might see that heart he showed when he was a kid.

And another thing - disposal. Where's the boy from? Western Australia. Perhaps he's a bit like Jonesy, and will come good as he gets more settled with Sherrins and not the WAFL's cruddy balls. I'm just spitballing, and trying to put a positive spin on things...

Well there has been enough negative stuff Percy.

Completely unwarranted.

We selected Brad Howard at pick 27 in 2006 - big assumption that we would pick up a player who is in front of Farren Ray.

I seem to remember a number of people slagging Sean Dempster for similar reasons. Didn't hear so much from them by year's end.

i think he will be a valuable pick up tbh

hes a hard runner.. can break the ball out of packs a strong mark...

and he comes from the hardest running team in the afl atm

so all in all he should be able to break the midfield up a bit something we've lacked all year

i wish the kid luck and lets hope he doesnt do a fiora on us... although i believe if he is to pull his head outa his rear end he'd be able to scramble his career back together

Farren Ray is 22. Aaron Fiora is 27. Any comparisons about failed potential are profoundly flawed. You can be 27 and have failed in your potential, but to write somebody off when they're 22 is a bit rich.

Farren Ray was taken in the 2004 draft. Brendan Goddard was taken in the 2002 draft. Recall, if you will, that 3 years ago, people were starting to call HIM soft, an example of failed potential, despite him averaging 20 disp in 2006. Goddard then proceeded to have a stellar half season before doing his knee, and has since come back as the player many supporters would sell their grandmother to ensure stayed at the club (often, I might suggest, these are the same supporters who were ready to ditch him).

Now, am I saying Farren Ray is going to be as good as Beeg - of course not. What I am saying is that you have no idea. I trust Ross - he's done good trading so far.

Some sense at last!! thank you Percy (and a few others). We've been moaning about pace & run through the midfield since the finals started. Now Rossy has traded for Ray - let's be honest the draft pick is still a good pick - people are still complaining! What would Nexus say???:D

Now you've seen it you'll probably start seeing it everywhere.

But yeah, hopefully Ray (kinda weird calling a footy player Ray) can pick up his act at the Saints, not that he's not doing badly, but 1 more touch a quarter and he's up there with our best players lol.

Completely agree with Percy :thumbsu:

I'm quite happy with this trade and feel he will add something we have been lacking for a long time now in the midfield.

I remember Aussie Jones copping a lot of criticism, particularly about being a so called pea-heart, in his early to mid 20's after a fantastic start to his career and he turned it around and played career best footy and became All-Australian almost a decade after his 1st All-Australian nod.

Not saying Ray will be as good but that he can turn it around.

St Kilda coach Ross Lyon says the addition of Bulldog midfielder Farren Ray does not mean the club has lost interest in former Eagle Ben Cousins.
The Saints landed Ray and the Bulldogs’ third-round pick (no. 48 overall) on the final day of trade week in exchange for its second-round pick.
But Lyon said Ray’s signing was not an indication it had shied away from the idea of taking Cousins, also a midfielder, in the NAB AFL Draft or NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.
“We’re all interested in Ben Cousins but what I’d like to say is that’s clearly in the hands of the AFL commission (to allow him to play)," he said.
"Ben’s health is a priority but everyone deserves a second chance,” Lyon said of the ex-West Coast star who is still recovering from drug addiction and was de-registered by the AFL in 2007.
Lyon said the addition of Ray would bring pace and endurance to the St Kilda midfield.
“We saw the opportunity/cost was reasonable. He’s got a massive tank and we deferred a bit to (general manager football operations) Matthew Drain’s experience as well,” Lyon said.
“He worked closely with him at the Bulldogs and knew him intimately.
"Matthew has a strong understanding of our strengths and weaknesses at St Kilda and felt we weren’t compromising what we wanted to do with bringing in the six kids.”
Ray, 22, has played 75 matches with the Bulldogs since he was taken with the fourth pick in the 2003 draft.
After amassing a season-high 23 possessions in the Bulldogs’ loss to Hawthorn in week one of the finals, Ray was dropped for the side’s remaining two matches of 2008.
He voiced his desire to leave the Dogs at the end of the season, citing a lack of opportunity as the main reason.
But Lyon says the Bulldogs’ loss is St Kilda’s gain.
“He can play half-back so we can continue to release (Jason) Gram, (Brendon) Goddard, (Sam) Gilbert and Sam Fisher. That was the plan," he said.
"We’re thrilled to have him, he’s done his apprenticeship and is ready to go.”
St Kilda, which has traditionally been a big player in draft week, had been linked with names such as Daniel Kerr, Mark Jamar, Nathan Carroll and Hamish McIntosh in the lead-up.
But Lyon said he was happy to make just the one trade and focus on bringing youth to the club.
“We came in with a strong plan that we wanted six picks in the national draft," he said.
"We’ve maintained our picks. We shuffled back 15 places and our recruiting guys were comfortable with that. If they had have said no we wouldn’t have gone forward,” he said.
