On the highway the other day, an ambulance passed us, then did a u bolt and overtook us lights flashing. Then another. A few k's up the road there's quite a f*ked up scene, no cops yet, traffic dodging debris. A 4wd and a thousand pieces of caravan a few meters after big blacks marks indicating someone left the road and then skidded back on to the other side. In the bushes about 20 meters off the road was a messed up car, it looked like the bull bar hit right on its drivers side A pillar.

Just after the scene the coppers are arriving, but people aren't pulling over letting them threw.People in flash cars, people who should know better. The only reason we can think that they disobeyed the sirens on the police cars was because if the police got there first, they'd have to turn around and take a detour.

Is this life in the fast lane?

Actually, your right. if you have a license, you have no excuse for blocking emergency services vehicles with sirens and lights blazing. Whether your a high school drop out or someone who can afford 50-60 thousand dollar suvs.

I would also point out, that people who can afford 50-60k cars can also be high school drop outs.

I am forced often to drive through the "lower socio economic" regions of Adelaide (Mainly North, but occasionally South) I've seen cars that I could only dream of affording (HSV's, etc) despite living in social housing or worse, so i would suggest judging people by the price tag of their car is as misguided as judging someone by the colour of their skin.

It's later on when the enormity of a situation like that hits you.

I've been in the Fire & Ambulance business for almost all of my adult life. Don't worry about these things. We expect stupidity from the public not only when we get to the scene, but on the way. Do as you wish. We cannot be shocked. But if some of you girls want to flash tit more often when a firetruck or ambulance comes past, it could help make some of the other dumb crap a bit more palatable.

In my line of work I've previously had to deal with a lot of fatals. My first fatal included seeing a dead family hanging still in their seats in their tarago which had flipped. One person had their window open and their arm was ripped clean off and it laying on the road along with bits and pieces of flesh and brain.

I've been to a lot since then, but i guess having that brutal first experience toughened me up a bit to it.
