With the success of many father/son selections, I am wondering where they would have been drafted if they were father son selections .

For example Tom Hawkins was expected to be drafted No 1 but Gary Ablett Junior would have gone in the 1930's.

I hope there is a ' draft expert ' who can compile a list.

Can't exactly compile you a list but I recall Mitch Morton (formerly WC, now Richmond) and Jesse W. Smith (Kangaroos) being touted as probable top 10 picks in the 2004 draft. Travis Cloke probably would've gone high.

There was talk at the time that Jesse Smith would have went top 5.

Ablett would have gone 1st round, probably top 10.
No, he would have gone second round as best. Just because he is good now does not mean he would have gone first round. People often said he was selected in the Falcons because of his name. People were worried bout his size at the time, and there were many doubters out there at the time. He was no way a first round pick. And either was Scarlo.

Disagree - he may not have been a "pure" first round pick but do you think 16 clubs would have all passed up on the chance to draft the son of Gary Ablett? No way, it would have been a risk but one team would have taken him.

yes i would. teams are not stupid they dont draft people because of their name. they draft them on talent

Isn;t the wholoe idea of this thread ignoring the father son thing. Lets base it one how they played.

Ablett Would have been a first Rounder. Probably at 8 insted of Bartel
Hawkins- No 1- 2006
Dempster- 20+ 2002
Callan- 20+ 2002
Watson- 10+ 2002
Brad Ebert- Top 10 ( some clubs disputed the port claim on him)2002
Blake- 20+ 2003
Peake - 20+ 2003
H. Shaw- 10 to 20- 2003
N.Ablett, J.Smith, T.Cloke, M.Morton would have gone top 15- 2004

The rest are not worth considering. Hope this helps:):thumbsu:

Nathan Ablett would not have gone top 15, considering he only played for Modewarre and from what i've been told he didn't play that well. If he wasn't the son of Gary i don't think he would have been picked up at all. But then again if he wasn't the son of Gary he might've played TAC or put some reasonable effort into his football.

Overrated a few players there.
Gaz would have been round 2 at best, when he came down I remember supporters saying he's ok but its the other brother that we want.
Heath Shaw would have been 20+, he was an ok player in juniors but nothing special. It was Brayden Shaw who was the supposed talent, funny how that turned out.

What about big Johno Brown?
How did they rate him early doors?

Nathan Ablett may not have been drafted at all. There was some criticism at the time that Geelong could've got Nablett with any pick they wanted, not necessarily as high as F/S.

Interestingly in reverse, Marc Murphy could've gone F/S to Brisbane but went at pick 1.

Gibbs and the younger two Morton borthers also stood to be picked up until regulations were changed. It would've been amazing if we could've got Cale Morton and Masten last year.

Yeah but we would have gotten Morton in stead of Ebert as someone would have made a bid at the 4-12 pick mark or maybe even 1-2 mark to see if we would give up 3, which would mean we lost Masten. I however haven't seen C. Morton play... which would you prefer?

Also, Hawkins Number 1, I doubt it, top 5 maybe, but for all of last yr all the talk was Gibbs, Hansen and Gumbleton, apart from having a massive carnival Hawkins was never put in that elite group, all the same, was pretty stoked we snagged him with a 3rd Rounder and was able to steal Selwood at 7, what a day! haha

It will be hard to judge from here on in, clubs that know they have players secured through the F/S rule will attempt to hide them in lower grade competitions, or not encourage them to play to their fullest, so they can use a later draft pick on them.

While you on the topic of Father sons any coming through this year apart from Ayce Cordy? No doubt Geelong's probably got another one

Where was Waite rated in this group pre-draft?

Watson, Crowe and Gardiner who were drafted with picks traded by Carlton are finished at the Roos and Cats.

Small consolation for dud trades made by Brittain. :o

Hawkins was put in that elite group since he won the Larke Medal at the under 18 championships and was AA.

At least one scout had him rated at one in The Australian, so you can't post with a straight face that Hawkins isn't as talented as Gumbleton and Thorp.

I'm not 100% sure so I'll just do Geelong

Scarlett - 1st Round
Ablett jnr - 1st-2nd Round
Tom Hawkins - Pick 1
Nathan Abett - Not Drafted
Tim Callan - 30-40
Mark Blake - 30-40
Adam Donahue - Bidding system, went where he should have
Mark Woolnough - top 10

I believe that Jonathon Brown would have been top 5.

When he was 17 i think hawthorn assumed him we would pick him up around second round, he was alright, but definatly wasnt one of the stars in the group.
