Vader - Wings (double bass intro)
Krisiun - Slain Fate (double bass intro)
1349 - From the Deeps (4:39 to 4:50; also the blastbeat outro)
Behemoth - Demigod (the whole song, really)
Megadeth - Hangar 18 (the drum riffs starting at 3:40 that coincide with Friedman and Mustaine's solos)
Megadeth - Take No Prisoners (1:37-1:55)
Malevolent Creation - Pursuit Revised (intro)
Suffocation - Seeds of the Suffering (double bass outro)

I also like the following cover of "Devour" by Vile. Not too techy but he plays very fast while still maintaining a very clean and crisp delivery :thumbsu:

Dont really like calling what we do "riffs". Thats what guitarists do, and guitarists are dirty flithy **********.

I'm more of a "licks" and "grooves" kind a guy, but i do know what you mean.

One of my all time favourite licks is the one Vinnie Paul rips into at the 4.45 mark of Psycho Holiday as they go into the last section of that song. Just killer.

Matt Cameron does one at about 2.35 in the Temple of the Dog tune Hunger Strike which is one of those pure spontaneous moments that took me years to figure out. The phrasing is ridiculous, yet so musical.

I've always loved the way Stewart Copeland comes in to kick off the groove in King of Pain. Throws you a ripper if you're not counting it.

And i think just about everyone digs that 4 stroke roll Dave Grohl rips into coming into the 3rd turn around of the chorus to QOTSA's Noone Knows.

Danny Carey has many highlights, but the one i remember seeing live yeas ago at Alternative Nation that absolutely cemented my interest in them is the lick he rips into at around the 4 min mark of Crawl Away off Undertow. Puts an emphatic exclamation mark on an already great section of music.

And i could just about fill this thread with Carter Beauford moments, but anyone who has heard the Live in Central Park version of Crush and has sat through the long series of solos at the end of it will be rewarded with some of the most tasteful and dextrous playing as he colourfully drifts in and out and all around the groove, culminating in 8 bars of some of my favourite ever licking out of all time.

Bwahahaha. Im a guitarist :( And actually, up for a long time I never used to refer to them as "riffs", rather, just "drum lines" (I didnt know what else to call em). But Ive noticed that alot of drummers refer to em as riffs as well. So I decided to go along with the flow

Yeah, I was a little confused about the 'riffs' part of this thread. But I'll think of some cool grooves/fills.....

The start, and indeed the entirety, of Van Halen's 'Hot For Teacher' always springs to mind.
Rush's 'The Weapon'. Almost disco-ish, but naturally Peart puts INFINITELY more character into the groove than any disco/doof-doof shyte has ever had.
As I said on another thread, Daniel Erlandsen from Arch Enemy's fill early in 'End of the Line' from 'Anthems of Rebellion' is NUTS!
I love Tommy Lee's verse and chorus grooves in 'Dr Feelgood'.
Big Gene Hoglan's work throughout Strapping Young Lad's 'City' is mind boggling.
Virtually every groove Stewart Copeland played is truly unique.
The drum intro to 'Where Eagles Dare' by Maiden is a major factor in me playing drums to this day.
Matt McDonough's mathematical playing throughout on Mudvayne's LD50 is stunning.
Lucius Borich on Cog's The New Normal.

Sh*t, I could go on all night.........

How could i forget Tommy?

Easily one of music's most underrated players. The fact he has made headlines for so much else means the fact that the cat can seriously play is often overlooked.

His entire performance over their selftitled album with John Corabi on vox is just killer, but in particular the opening track "Power to the Music". Just monstrous rock drumming and tough as nails (which is certainly helped along by Bob Rock's ridiculously big drum sound) Just about my favourite drumming album, along with SuperUnknown and Bad Motor Finger.

i'm not an expert on drum 'riffs', 'lines' or 'grooves', but i'm a big fan of the one used in Oasis's "F****in in the Bushes". Most people would recognise it from the final bareknuckle boxing scene in Snatch.
 
mudhoney's OVERBLOWN has to be one of my favs for its rolling effect and lars on any of the master songs , seeing him so ********ed after each song it proves that he is one of the most amazing drummers out there { after bohnem }
 
Good pick up on the Rush tune...that one's fun to play.

Bonham's "The Crunge" off Houses of the Holy has always been one of my favourites. Also hard to go past "When the Levee Breaks"

There's an old Missing Persons song called "US Drag" which has Terry Bozzio playing this recurring syncopated pattern through the entire piece.

Jeff Porcaro's got a million. Rosanna...Lido...Lowdown

I'm into famous drum breaks as well - James Brown's "Funky Drummer", "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey is another good one (think "Bust a Move" - a lot of samples from this there). "Ashley's Roachclip" by Chuck Brown is another one - that one contains the infamous 'Milli Vanilli' drum break. I get a lot more enjoyment out of listening to the songs that the samples all actually came from.

Do you know how they recorded the drums on WTLB? How they got that amazing sound? They put Bonzo at the bottom of a big, tall church steeple, and simply put microphones on every landing above him! Truly unique, and created a truly unique sound.....
 
Going back,one thats always stuck in my mind as being the signature of the song is "My Sharona"

Would go pretty close to the most famous drum fill of all time wouldnt it?

Alot of people rag on uncle Phil for being a cheese merchant, and they probably have a fair point. But let it never be forgotten that the cat can seriously hold his own behind a drum kit.
