SCHMOOOOOO!! I had one of those, although her bottom teeth stuck out a lot more. Lovely dogs, they are.

Other recommendations are Fox or Jack Russell Terriors. Great companions, will chase mice/rats/rabbits/cats until the cows come home, don't eat too much but they need to be walked semi-regularly unless you have a big yard or like having it dug up.

Staffordshire Bull Terriors are truly lovely dogs as well. They would not hurt any human. My housemate has one and its one of the friendliest dogs you will ever meet. You just have to be careful around other dogs, they like a scrap and will take on and beat even BIG dogs if they get their back up.

I have a Jack Russel and a Staffy. The mentalness of the jack russel rubs off onto the staffy, which makes feeding them or walking them a nightmare. Jack Russel's are full of energy and never settle down, loyal and a good pet but. The staffy wood never hurt a fly i dont think, unless there is food around. Jack Russel's have this tendency to think that they r a lot heavier than they are as well.

Afghan Hound, they're bloody stupid which is always lots of fun where dogs are concerned & you could call it Taliban.

thanks a lot folks, really after an intelligent dog so I took note of those suggesting their dog was smart. Someone mentioned to me that border collies are pretty smart.

Jack Russells are just a mouth on 4 legs, small man syndrome, nastiest dogs around

Yeah, I grew up with a Jack Russell, but it was a woos. It was a hyper little bugger when the mood hit it though. And it never ceased to amaze me how for a dog so small it could take over 3/4 of a queen size bed.

I hope you realize I'm going to buy a dozen of them now? :D

If you like big dogs then you can't go past German Shepards. Ours is 6 years old now , we've had him since he was 7 weeks. They are loyal, incredibly smart and beautiful to look at.

As long as you have 10 feet high fences, they aren't called "springers" for nothing, right Tashi. :D

Correct.. but he doesn't jump fences anymore- he is a good mut now (and apart from that- they are too high for him to jump now) and he doesn't even bark much anymore.. and he comes in when you tell him too.. so I don't have to take him out to pee any more- and if he does happen to bark, there is a secret weapon, a squeaky bone, which he has fallen in love with, and any squeak will have him running for you.. Good mut he is- kind of.

Got a Springer, got a Labrador- the Labrador rules.. the Springer is just a goofball.. a big goofballish wuss- but a nice one.

Go Roos

Yeah, have to agree as I have a red dobermann. They have a great temperament & are huge sooks!

Ha, red ones are pretend ones I tell you! They are so laid back and all! ;)

Although I'm now starting to think our latest black and tan one (5 months) is a brown one in disguise! It sits there trying to look soooo depressed, with the 'I'm so sad come and pat me" look!!

dog. Know this is way off footy but wondered if people here could suggest a great dog to buy. After all it is cricket season unseasonally so pardon the diversion

To be totally honest, all the people in this thread that have recommended one breed or another, have been thoroughly irresponsible.

Choosing a breed of dog is not a task to be taken lightly, you must take several circumstances into account

1/- What are your job details, ie when will, and when wont, you be at home?

2/- Is your income stream sufficient that you can undertake ALL of the responsibilities of dog ownership, ie, feeding, vet supplies & visits, etc

3/- What type of housing do you enjoy, ie a large house, or a small flat, etc

4/- What type of backyard do you have, ie is it a large open yard, do you have plants which are potentially dangerous to dogs, etc

5/- Is your locality fully fenced, or is the backyard seperately fenced, ie if you open the gate to park your car, could the dog rush off if it saw a cat, etc

6/- What sort of locality do you have, ie will the dog be a danger to native species, or will the dog be under risk from native species like snakes, etc

7/- Make sure you can be morally & financially responsible if you select a breed known to dangerous to others

8/- Most importantly, how much time and effort are you prepared to devote to your dog, for grooming, foe exercising, for obedience training

Answer all of these, plus other questions before you undertake the responsibility of dog ownership.

There is nothing more infuriating than seeing a beautiful dog abandoned, just because the owner did not take care in the selection of breed

Amazing, all the loud mouths, and single brain cells have disappeared from this thread

Showing them up for what they are, disingenuous, manipulative & duplicitous, trying to forward their own agendas, irrespective of the consequences

Have a sook Asgardian, the thread is ambiguous.

The title asks what your favourite breed is, while in the content it says what would be good for him/her.

I actually didn't even notice it said that until you mentioned it, I was just going on the thread title.

And yes you are right, it does depend on a lot of things like the things you mentioned, and whether you have small kids, cats etc etc. Good to see you take native animals into account :)
