Just wanted to change the focus here from the current young squad and go back in time!
I want to know who were your top 5 favourite Hawk players that you have seen play and why?

For me it is:

Matthews - If he was out injured or suspended, we were in big trouble. Tough and no holds barred attitude loved by Hawk fans.
Brereton - We couldn't get enough of Dermie and his big hits and the opposition were soooo jealous!
Knights - Pure athetlism and skill, not a great coach though!
Jarman - Skill, skill and more skill. Was a pleasure to watch him glide through the center square and hit Dunstall on the chest every time.
Langford - Ever dependable at full back. Hardly ever got beaten in his prime. Was a close call with Mew at CHB but Langers just takes it!!!

1 Tony Hall, most underated footballer but everyone who played with him and against him rated him so highly,Strong in the air, beautiful kick and could run all day, before that worm Andy Collins cut him down, unforgivable.
2 Leigh Mathews, greatest player to ever pull on a guernsy.
3 Dermott Brereton, passion for the jumper and would do anything to win.
4 Shane Crawford,I think he is a tad underated because he did not play in our champion side.He has won many a game for the Hawkers.
5 Peter Knights he would be an absolute gun in todays football.

Dunstall - Ultimate team player. Gave up may shots at goal to a player in a better position (something Buddy can study up on :p).
Platten - Courage and always followed up.
Crawford - One of the best. Does not have a big ego and will talk to anyone.
Langford - Just liked his style of play.
Vanders - Bleeds Brown and Gold. Don't besmirch the Hawks around this guy.

Dipper

The Rat

Derm

Barney

Knightsey

Tucky

These guys personified Hawthorn at it's mightiest, And I was lucky enough to grow up in an era that allowed me to admire their collective talents.

This list is in no particular order, but it's not possible for me to trim it any further.

I respect anyone that plays a game for my Hawks, but the aforementioned 6 are standouts for my lifetime thus far.

John Peck won the goal kicking in the sixtees 3 years in a row, tough as
nails I saw him play when I was a kid , I loved him.
Mathews hard extraordinarily skilled, total commitment, no fear could play today if there were no umps.He is HAWTHORN SPIRIT. I loved him
Dipper, slapped around by a hard man then became a hard man in his own right
what a character, Brownlow medalist with strength honesty .I loved him too.
Crimo little champ, fearless dynamite fast rover and goal sneak. He also carries the spirit of our club wherever he may be .RIP.
Crawf is simply a smooth magic Brownlow medalist. Also a man with extraordinary skill, a massive motor runs forever.
I have to have six because you cannot mention Hawthorn without mentioning
Dermie. He also carries that Hawk aura of the spirit of our club . Say Dermot
Brereton and your saying the word courage. In the trenches wouldn't you want these blokes with you when you jumped the bags.

Its your opinion and i love his committment to the brown and gold, but as a footballer he has never done it for me personally!

Its great to see the rat get so much praise!. Was a guy who gave his all and everytime he got on the field. :thumbsu:

Tony Hall, most underated footballer but everyone who played with him and against him rated him so highly,Strong in the air, beautiful kick and could run all day, before that worm Andy Collins cut him down, unforgivable.

Can you refresh my memory - what happened here??

Playing State of origin Footy, Andy Collins (Vic) laid a great tackle on Tony Hall (SA?) unfortunatly Hall does his Knee in the tackle and never got back to his greatest best form again.

Purely bad luck and very harsh on Andy Collins to put any blame on him. WTF was he ment to do.

I am dying to hear from someone who watched footy in the 70's with Crimmo, Scott, Bomber Hendrie etc:cool:

Ahh that's right.

How could you possibly blame Andy Collins? He obviously had no intent to injure his knee. Andy Collins was a loyal Hawthorn player - give him some respect!

Just doing what Collo did best, run down and tackle a player from behind.
And, FWIW, IMHO Hall was a good player with great skill but inconsistent and went missing, sort of like Ken Judge used to!

1. Dermie - Crashed packs, no fear and feared by all who played on him, CHF who could win games by himself, something i hope Rougphie will become

2. Jarman - Freak skill, ability to make oppostition players look stupid, side stepping, blind turn genious with pin point accuracy nothing he couldn't do with a football. Gutted when he went to adelaide. Hope someone on this list excites me as much as he did soon.... Muston maybe?

3. Dunstall - Remember the days when i thought 5 goals from JD was a quiet day, awsome kick for goal, explosive lead and mark, and unselfish as they come... No such thing as pure FF these days (Lloyd maybe) but plenty buddy rougphie and co and learn from...

4. Mathews - Rover dynamo, hard as nails, game dominator, set the standard for every hard man since, and could kick loads of goals. Mitchell fits the bill if could kick couple more goals.

5. Gary Aryes - Like the CHB version of Dermie, rarely beaten, super strong and quick and is what we desperately need in our current side! A backman like this could well be the missing link for us to have a crack at a premiership!

Darren Pritchard - the little Tasmanian would stream out of the middle and lay the ball on Dunstalls chest time after time. Super mullet as well.

Ray Jenke - on the opposite wing to Pritch or off a HBF always played a lot taller than he was.

Paul Dear - I wore no.13 in my little league game with the Hawks and I was channeling the great man during that game against the stinking Pies. Who will ever forget his GF in '91.

James Morrisey - the freak, he could do the most amazing things with a football.

You cannot put Ken Judge in the same league as Tony Hall,I no of 2 AFL players as quoting that Tony Hall was the best player they played on,one was Mark Riccuto, the other Ken Hinkley.Show me a Half forward that does not go missing some days.Tony was not soft ,Ken Judge was there is a difference.

There is so many players you could select, everyone loved a different player for different reasons. My 5 would be:

Darren Jarman - The best skills on both sides of his body whether he was under pressure or not. Just a sensational footballer.

Chris Langford - Was Mr reliable in a time of some of the greatest forwards to ever play the game. Solid as a rock, tough and played the game fairly.

Peter Knights - Was a great player at either end of the field, and you would pay money to watch a guy like peter play.

Jason Dunstall - Need i say anymore. A terrific forward with a deadly kick. Strong as a ox, and quick off the mark on a lead. Absolute legend.

Luke Hodge - He is a new player but that means nothing. He is hard at the contest and the man. He has very good skills and leads by example. A very smart footballer who takes sh*t from no-one. A am rapped we drafted him. He is going to be a beauty of a player.:thumbsu: :thumbsu:

My all time favourites...........

Leigh Matthews......Greatest footballer "ever".

Peter Hudson........Goal kicking machine, legend of the game.

Peter Crimmins.......Most courageous small man with a lions heart,God Bless.

Don Scott.......Ruthless ruckman,as tough as they come.

Dermott Brereton.......Outstanding matchwinner, sacrificed his body for his club.

Darren Pritchard - the little Tasmanian would stream out of the middle and lay the ball on Dunstalls chest time after time. Super mullet as well.
.

We had some great mullets in those days, Pritch, Dipper, Dermie, Dunstall but i think Ayres took the cake:D

Jason Dunstall - Champion, pure class....
Dermott Brereton - tough, flamboyant and just good.
Richard Loveridge - when I was a kid I'd go nuts whenever he got the ball.
Peter Knights - Love the big leap of Knights, probably the reason I go for the Hawks and it spited my Dad (Bombers) when I was like 4.
Tim Boyle - I reckon we will see the best of this kid in 07 - he has potential.

This was hard - could have named 50...
Tony Hall, Crawf, Hodge, Matthews, Jarman, Ben Allen, Dipper and Gary Ayres just missed the cut.

Sorry Cartman48, but Loverage and Boyle would be in my bottom 5!

I have heard Dermie rate Loveridge as one of the best rovers of all time only just behind the Rat.
He quit because he didnt want to be no 2 at Hawthorn and he didnt want to play for another team.(Plus Law to fall back on)
Lethal,
Dermie
Knights
Ayres
Dunstal
Huddo Snr.
Kelvin Moore
Chris Mew
Ian Bremner
