Perth cardiologists are alarmed by a rising number of young and middle-aged men with heart damage after using amphetamines and body-building supplements.

Several doctors have told of their deepening concerns about seeing patients, some aged in their 20s, on their way to heart failure requiring a transplant, after using amphetamines or sports supplements ordered over the internet from China.

Cardiologists! Do they even lift?

Between this and infertility from watching too much pr0n, Gen Y just might have the overpopulation problem covered.

Add the brain cancer epidemic from cellphones, spinal/nerve injuries from wearing pants to low, always looking down at phone and what it does to eyes. The next point will bring all the nutters to yard, vaccination, the over use will be evident in half a century.

When it comes from removing idiots from the human gene pool, amphetamines and body building supplements are the best invention since the internal combustion engine. Heart damage and sexual dysfunction ftw bro.

I do wonder about mobile phones. As a general proposition it seems pretty clear that too much radiation = increased risk of cancer. Starting with that proposition, there's absolutely no way we can be sure that 30 years of continous exposure to cell phones (or 40, or 50) doesn't cause brain cancer, simply because how do you test for that other than wait and see? I reckon a wise thing to do is to closely monitor the health of any Gordon Gecko type super yuppies who were early adopters in the late 80s. If they all start to keel over with brain cancer circa 2020 the first world best get its house in order, because a combination of Latvian peasants, North Koreans and my technophobic mother are going to inherit the earth.

Lets be real now, in this day and age they would know enough about radiation exposure to predict future health implications. We're looking back at a histroy of above ground nuclear bomb testing, aeroplanes flying without radiation protection, medical imaging experimentation and nuclear disasters just to name a few.

Plus those idiots being in complete denial about any chance of a problem, so they keep using the stuff even after getting the warning signs.

I look forward to seeing the Facebook tributes to those tragically taken so young.

I'm not a medical expert, but as a matter if logic none of those are quite the same as putting a radiation emitting device next to your head for an hour or so a day, continuously basically for you entire life.

For what it's worth, according to the wiki, the scientific consensus at this time seems to be they simply don't know.

Ahhhhh amphetamines where would my life be without you. A chemical love story.

For srs though they were pretty vague on the amphetamines... Are we talking about the Saturday night performance enhancing amphetamines or the ones you can take before the gym?

The story seemed more focused on the gym junkie type, but I imagine the nightclub type could cause issues as well. It's all about overworking the heart"

Potentially, but there are plenty of e heads coming out of the 80's showing not many signs of the damage predicted from the excesses of the late 80's and early 90's.

Amphetamines will raise your body temp, and in turn your heart rate. But they're not gonna send it to double your resting heart rate or above, unless you're combining that with some Saturday night boogie on the dancefloor, which would pump up your heart rate anyway.

A gym junkie is in the gym multiple times a week, usually pushing their heart rate right up, mine will go from about ~60 resting to ~150 working. Combine that with any sort of amphetamines and you'll be working your heart fairly hard.

A couple of points of difference is that a night out will usually last 8+ hours, but it's you're not on the go the entire time. Also the gym would usually be a bit more controlled environment with no alcohol involved.

Pardon my complete ignorance, but amphetamines for gym junkies - is it to raise their heart rate to lose fat?

A bit of everything really - Raises the heart rate, suppresses hunger. If you don't take too much you should crash pretty hard after allowing for a deep sleep.

Always taken in much lower doses than those who are heading out on the town, and you'd steer clear of the more psychedelic compounds like MDMA. More for a pick me up that gives you a burst of energy but not disorientate you. The amphetamine family is much wider and varied than most people realise. I get annoyed when I read newspaper articles just using the word "amphetamines" and it's far too vague.

Amphetamines in the gym is not my cup of tea, I think too much can go wrong.

There was a legal party pill which had geranamine in it. Also know as DMAA. Was the only legal pill I've ever had which did the biz. Funnily enough was banned a few months after we discovered it. I was led to believe this was somewhat popular in the gym scene, but I never investigated and could be complete bollox.

Now there's a great idea - a nightclubbing pill whose name is also a war cry to shout as you launch yourself onto the dance floor!

GERANAMINE!!!

what ever happened to just getting in the gym and lifting :D

Wow this whole weird lifting culture is getting stranger by the day

I was browsing another forum and they linked to a story "Today Tonight" ran about this. The story seemed to also imply that whey protein powder and creatine caused heart problems which is completely unfounded and absurd. No argument from me that the drugs in the OP along with steroids aren't a good idea but including whey powder and creatine in the same basket is pathetic.

Of course, you expect it from a show of Today Tonight's level, it's done it's job and got the middle aged women ranting about bodybuilding on it's facebook page in their hundreds.
