Forgiveness if I'm missed the thread, but there doesn't appear to be one. Australia's Fed Cup campaign kicked off today in Perth with Dokic and Stosur winning their singles matches and Dellacqua and Stubbs winning the doubles, all without dropping a set - as they should!

Found this quote really funny from an article online on The Australian site:

The biggest problem facing Dokic was her lack of knowledge about her opponent, with the Australian revealing she did not know until the warm-up that Jin-A was left-handed.

There's not much else interesting to say, except I guess that Mirza pulled out of the Indian team. Some other rubbers were today, but there's no info available on the Fed Cup site yet.

Heres some more info...

Dokic gives Australia 1-0 lead

World No.91 Jelena Dokic put aside a bout of illness to spearhead Australia's 3-0 win over Korea in the opening day of the Federation Cup Asia/Oceania play-off in Perth on Wednesday.

Dokic, who controversially switched allegiances to Serbia in 2001 before returning to Australia in 2006, swept aside world No.154 Lee Jin-A 6-0 6-3 in less than an hour, while Samantha Stosur continued the rout with a 6-2 6-4 demolition of world No.248 Lee Ye-Ra.

Casey Dellacqua and Rennae Stubbs made it a clean sweep with a 6-0 6-2 win over Chang Kyung Mi and Jin-A in the doubles.

Dokic revealed she had difficulty breathing after illness had left her with a sore throat and a blocked nose.

"I got it last week straight after I finished (at the Australian Open) and went on the antibiotics," Dokic said.

"But then I couldn't play on the antibiotics because you get dizzy and you don't feel so good, so I came off them and now it's come back."

Dokic, representing Australia at the Fed Cup for the first time since 2000, said she never considered bypassing the tournament despite being left emotionally and physically drained following her dream run at this year's Australian Open, where she reached the quarterfinal.

"I could have gone to Europe or America but I made it very clear I wanted to play Fed Cup and I would always make myself available again for Australia, just like I did before," she said.

"There was no way for me to miss this opportunity to play again.
"If we get through and have to play again in April (for the World Group II playoff) and I have to come back in the middle of the season again to play in Australia, if that's the case I would do it."

Australia will reach Saturday's final if they defeat Thailand on Thursday and Taiwan on Friday.

India's hopes were dealt a blow when former world No.27 Sania Mirza withdrew after tearing a stomach muscle.

In her absence, India went down 3-0 to New Zealand, while Indonesia defeated Uzbekistan 2-1 in the other group A encounter.

In group B, Thailand, boasting world No.41 Tamarine Tanasugarn, defeated Taiwan 3-0.

Dokic admitted she went into her match knowing nothing about her opponent.

"We didn't even know she was a left-hander this morning," Dokic said.

"It's difficult for us to even have a gameplan going into the matches ... we don't know our opponents."

Stosur, who forgot what other countries were in Australia's pool, said it wasn't a big deal going into a match not knowing an opponent.

"It's a bit of feeling out process but it's not the end of the world if you don't know them," Stosur said.

With a lot of the big names out, Australia really should win this thing. Tanasugarn will be tough but Sam is good enough to beat her as long as she doesn't start choking...

w00t w00t! Good to see she's kept her form up, but the competition isn't exactly tough. Anyone know where she's off to next? Keen to see how she goes in a real tournament.

She accepted a wild card into the qualifying draw at Memphis which IIRC starts next week.
Bit surprised she wasn't offered a MDWC.

Stosur d. Tanasugarn 4-6, 7-5, 6-0
Came back from 2-5 down in the second.

How many of the top players bother with the Fed Cup? Dokic, Stosur, Dellacqua, Stubbs is a reasonable team if the Williams sisters, the top russians and serbians don't suit up.

The youngest player in the fed cup was 12, puts grandpa Tomic in the shade.

Problem is, i think it will take Australia 2 years to get back to World Group I. At the moment we are still trying to qualify for next years World Group II.

(Please correct me if I'm wrong, All these groups and playoffs confuse me :()

yeah, you're right, our next chance to try and have achance of winning the Fed Cup is in 2011, and that's if we get back into World Group 2 and then in 2010 are able to qualify back into World Group 1

Lots. Russia have fielded some amazing teams over recent years. Sharapova, Chakvetadze, Safina, Vesnina, Kuznetsova, Zvonareva ect have all played. Serbia have Ivanovic and Jankovic.

Just yesterday Wozniacki beat Azarenka. Unlike most of the ATP, the girls actually think it's an honour to represent their country and there are few top players who don't participate.

Another cleansweep.

Casey Dellacqua d. I-Hsuan Hwang 6-1 6-1 (Dellacqua's first singles win of the year?)
Stosur d. Chin-Wei Chan 6-3 6-0
Stosur/Stubbs d. Chin-Wei Chan/Chia-Jung Chuang 6-3 7-6(2).
Dokic was supposed to team up with Stubbs but pulled out, don't know why.

BTW, after Memphis, Dokic also has Acapulco, Indian Wells, and Miami.

What are you talking about? Most players, if not all of the amle playesr play davis Cup. federer plays on occcasions but that's about it. It's not like players Sharapova etc. have contiuned to front up every time.

Have New Zealand in the final. Should be able to get through providing Sam doesn't choke against marina.

Australia beats New Zealand, onto the WGII playoff in April i think.

"The 2009 World Group II Play-offs will take place on April 25-26.

The eight nations competing will be the four World Group II first round losers and the four qualifiers from zonal Group I.

Seedings will be based on the latest ITF Fed Cup Nations Ranking .
"

4 countries from World Group II
2 countries from Group One Euro/African Zone
1 country from Group One Americas Zone
1 country from Group One Asia/Oceania Zone

ie.

2 of [15]-Switzerland/[12]-Germany and [13]-Ukraine/[10]-Israel (hosted by first-named countries)
[7]-Belgium
[11]-Japan
[20]-Australia
[21]-Canada
[38]-Poland
[45]-Estonia

So the question is, can we finish top 4? We should be able to beat Belgium, Switzerland, and possibly one or two others. We will know who our opponents will be within a couple days. We should be favoured to qualify for World Group II.
