Just a great story. Thanks.

For all the vitriol he received he seems to have come out of it with a level head. I wonder if he had ever considered analytical coaching

Just 'not good enough' he's rationalised it as

Didn't he kick 10 goals in a prelim for the Eagles here as a teenager?

Maybe listening to daddy was his downfall

From memory his dad told him to stay at Adelaide

Quite, as a Key Forward going to a club with Gehrig at the peak of his powers, a 23 year old Rievdwolt and Koschitzke might have been more the problem.

Honest assessment of his footballing abilities. Interesting to note his comments about the company he 'founded', Bastion. From personal knowledge / interactions at a business level, I don't think it'll be too long before they're just another failed, all "smoke and mirrors", advertising agency. Very much a case of who you know and not what you know, expansion into unknown / untested markets, creating numerous entities, etc. Good luck to them, but I suspect they won't last too long before something gives!

that's a really good piece. interesting to see he views his football career as an abstract failure. certainly looks to have landed on his feet

I liked that even viewing it in that way he had the emotional intelligence to not let it affect him. I think reading between the lines he knew even as a teen that he wasnt going to have a long career. His comments about going at one level then knuckling down before being drafted ring true of a player that got the most out of himself at the one moment it counted. Draft year

I did not know that about his dad and I wonder how much that contributed to the 'push'

"I remember leaving Adelaide, sitting in a café and getting sprayed verbally by an elderly lady.

That was rough but not an isolated incident. Especially in Adelaide, I have many more stories of copping sprays after I decided to leave the club. Fair enough too I reckon. Supporters have the right to be pissed off. And they were (although I reckon I did them a favour in the end!)."

Good that he gets that and isn't whining about it like some.

The fans' passion for their club is what gives these guys the opportunity to make a shit ton of money playing sport. If the fans didn't GAF that opportunity wouldn't be there. It's a double-edged sword though and the passion that earns you adoring fans also goes the other way.

Wonder if Dangerfield will ever look back on his comments and realise this to be the case

He also acknowledged he was slow. Nick Riewoldt was emerging as the modern prototype AFL key forward.

You can still be a slow key forward and be successful at SANFL. Not in the AFL.

Watts was probably five years too late into the AFL.

That list of injuries would not help either.

McGregor and Perrie were our KPFs for quite a while during that era. Neither were more talented than Watts and though they had good endurance were certainly not quicker.

He just pulled the wrong rein. Shocking career move. The injuries then compounded it

Reading that article I think he knows it too. The absence of any mention of it whatsoever screams loud.

Fair point.

Many would suggest us having SANFL standard key forwards in Kenny and Perrie cost us a couple of flags.

I liked both guys as they gave their all and loved the club. But both were borderline AFL standard players.

Yo u are correct. Watts may have had a bit more talent, but he was also slow.

Watts was slow due to all the injuries he had. "Wasn't good enough" was more him just "man-ning up" and not trying to make any excuses. If he actually wasn't good enough, he wouldn't have been selected in the first round of AFL draft.

Great article by Watts, makes you realise there's more to life than just football, and players do have feelings and tough luck. We have the right to hate any player as fans, but need to remember these players have tough luck stories just like anyone of us can have. Seems like he had suffered from depression at some point, leading to his early retirement. Good to see he's one example that an AFL player can still build a successful career after footy, and footy isn't the be all. I like the message he's trying to send out - more to life than just footy!

I spoke to him after the losing grand final for the Eagles over a beer that it was the worst choice he could have made going to St Kilda. They had Gehrig, Riewoldt, Koschitski and Hammil at the time. If he stayed here, he was fighting with Perrie, McGregor and Gill.
