Debt collection agencies are mega-flogs. I once had a debt that was a bit of a misunderstanding on my part and this collection agency came after like I was a master criminal.

Ringing me at 8pm on my mobile while I wasn't at home, demanding I make some kind of arrangement of payment and when I said I needed time to check my records and my current financial situation before I could commit to anything the guy told me (not asked) to give him my email address so he could send me a financial status form, which included questions about how much my home and car were worth and all sorts of other personal details I was not comfortable revealing to a company I knew nothing about.

I ended up having a 15 minute argument with the next guy who rang me who wouldn't listen to reason and expected me to come up with a fairly large amount of money in 48 hours. I ended up getting my parents to help me get the money together just to get them off my back. I guess that's what they wanted with their tactics.

I never disputed the debt itself, just the manner in which it was accrued and their way of chasing after it. I rang the state ombudsman about it and he said he would look into their practices but for legal reasons he wouldn't be able to tell me the results.

I hope they got hauled over the coals but I doubt it.

mate i'm a bank manager and i see this type of stuff ruining credit ratings every day of the week. my advice, pay it! if this goes legal and gets through to the CRAA then you've got no hope of ever getting a mortgage or refinancing, no bank will touch you, maybe a 2nd tier bank if your lucky.
i know it sounds like a cop-out but get rid of this debt before it haunts you later on when you least expect it.

Rubbish. I worked with loan applications for a major bank for five years.

If it's a paid default and you provide a written explanation as to how it occurred, you'll be fine as long as you're not going for a dodgy 95% loan.

hey idiot? the important word being "worked" not "working" in your post. why would i make this up clown? i'm in the industry now and have to explain stupid things like this to customers every day. it may have been different when you worked in applications but the lending criteria for mortgages especially has changed drastically.
i have had a $35 default on a customers record make him unable to get a mortgage because of a 4 year old optus bill!
next time dont be quick to dismiss someones post because it is different from YOUR recollections of the industry, flog.

Worked as in up to a couple of months ago, and still work at the same bank within the same general area but not making the calls. So still get all the policy changes etc.

Might be the case at "your bank" but that doesn't = all the majors.

Idiot
