I’ve been watching and playing footy for a long time now and am of the opinion that to win a premiership a team has to have at least 14 players who are champions.

By ‘champion’ I mean somebody who can do something special to win or save a game. For example look at the team back in 1997, we had the 14 then and could have won the grand final, Gone are champs like Wynd, Hudson, Liberatore, Romero, Cook, Cameron, Winmar, Montgomery and others like Dimmattina who have fallen from form.

I look at today’s team and try to find the 14 players necessary to put us into September but can find only 11.

1. Luke Darcy
2. Brad Johnson
3. Chris Grant
4. Scott West
5. Nathan G. Brown
6. Rohan Smith
7. Daniel Bandy
8. Steven Kretiuk
9. Matthew Croft
10. Daniel Giansiracusa
11. Robert Murphy

So who are the other 3 likely to step up this year?

I wouldn’t pick any of the following:
Patrick Bowden
Paul Dimattina
Nathan Eagleton
Simon Garlick

So out of this list pick me 3 players who are going to rise to the status of champion.
Scott Bassett
Shane Birss
Nicholas Bruton
Brent Colbert
Daniel Cross
Cameron Faulkner
Lindsay Gilbee
Mitchell Hahn
Ryan Hargrave
Brian Harris
Ben Harrison
Kieran McGuinness
Jordon McMahon
William Minson
Brad Murphy
Marcus Picken
Sam Power
Matthew Robbins
Wayde Skipper
Tim Walsh
Patrick Wiggins
Cameron Wight

Besides the 14 champions the other 4 have to be reasonably good. have we got another 4?

although, i didn't think that every good club had 14 champions.

Depends what your interpretation of a "champion" is.

I think no team has more than 2 current champions.

Change 'champions' to 'contest winners' and I would agree. Guys that can beat their opponent 70% of the time in what should be a 50/50.

Teams that have 14 guys that win 50/50's 70% of the time would win every game by a big margin.

But yeah, obviously the word champions needs to be watered down a bit.

Our '97 side is so overrated. We had much better years in '98 and '99. However, the '97 side gets more recognition just because we missed out on a grand final by less than a kick. In all seriousness, I was more annoyed at our '98 preliminary final loss to Adelaide than what I was the previous year. There is no way known we should have lost that game.

Anyway, back to the subject.

Every side can win the premiership in 2003. With luck, anything, and I mean anything, can happen. If certain players step up we will suprise a lot of people.

We have shown in the past that, on our day, we can beat any team we want. Essendon of 2000, Carlton of 2000, West Coast of '97 and much more. There is just a question mark over the way we will enter each game and the level of degree in which the luck will fall. A lucky bounce can shape a season. Anything can happen.

By the way, every AFL player should be reckoned as a champion. They are all the best 600 odd players in the world. That's less than 0.00001 percent of the worlds' population.

I think brisbane has lost something like 5 games in 2 years?

Our contest winners are:
---------------
Darce
West
Grant
Brown
Murph

guys who break even
---------------
Johno
Hargeave
Smith
Croft
Kritter
Garlo
Robbo
Dimma

guys who get beat
----------------------
Bandy
Eagle
Harro
Bowdo
Guido
Alvey

other players havent had enough game time to judge properly.

not saying the guys who 'get beat' dont have other attributes that the team needs, just that in a 50/50, their opponent is more likely to come away with the ball.

Im hoping that Johno, Hahn, Robbo and Hargreave can make it into the top bracket, and that Guido, Wiggins, Gilbee, Basset and Skipper could make it into the middle bracket. That would give us a good base from which to have a crack at a GF.

It is rather strange that out closest season to a flag since 1961 gets more recognition than seasons when we didn't get that close isn't it. As a wise man once said, if i could describe it as a picture...

Not every player should be considered a champion. Only about 0.000 whatever of the worlds population have even heard of aussie rules, let alone played it.

You'll find its closer to double that. and even if it wasn't, that is a fair way from winning EVERY game by a BIG margin.

Not having a go at your idea, just reckon the figures are a bit out.

Mitch
Ryan
Robbo
Dimma (am I biased?)

but hey lets see how they go in the first half of the season at least before we start pickin the team for september....who knows it could a complete and utter dud so far that turns around and stars!!

(nah im not sure eagle is included lol)

Are you serious about Johnno not being a contest winner?????

He gets a lot of ball by hard running, and certainly doesnt shirk the issue in close, but I dont think he gets more than his fair share of 50/50s.

OK, an exception to that is on the lead marking, but we need him as an onballer more than a forward.

Hes still got a fair bit of footy ahead of him. If he could work on his contesting skills, and improve his kicking, he would be mentioned in the same breath as buckley and voss.
