Fireworks

I don't dislike them but I also don't get excited about them either. Dog's hate them though which makes things hard in the neighborhood, poor things.

Speaking of fireworks , the ABC camera chopper over sydney harbour had a VERY close call tonight.
If it's the same bit I saw it was the drone they had going for it. Nearly got blown out of the sky.
No chopper would fly that close to a firework ever.

Ah yes good call.

Biggest waste of money

Although I do enjoy reading about the idiots who try their own homemade fireworks on NYE and end up blowing their hand off.Just brings a smile to my face. :D
This. Spending millions on this crap every year and every major event when the money could be going to other places.

I can understand the tourists camping out etc but the people who get there more than 24 hours before it in Sydney are just nuts......

And the TV coverage of them is always rubbish

I'm a fan of the Sydney fireworks. Only go once every 5 or so years but it's a fun event. Generally go to one of the parks around the harbour that has a beach, and isn't inside the alcohol-free zone. If you get there around lunchtime there's still tons of spots. Usually go with a few friends, we sit around and chat all afternoon, eat, drink, swim, play cards, that sort of thing. The actual fireworks are just a nice finish to a pretty relaxed day.

Getting home is a pain though.

See that's weird- I'm house sitting for these people that have 2 dogs- one is quite young, they got him this year so this is his first NYE. There were fireworks in our area for a good half hour.

Not a peep from either dog, they must have slept right thru them. o_O:thumbsu:

But see you can apply that to anything imo. New iphone, boxing day sales, etc etc. ;)

My dog, who has sat through numerous fireworks in our area over the years decided he'd jump through the half open bathroom window and smash just about every bottle off the ledge.

As they get older, their ears and neurological system get more sensitive.Separations and general anxieties or changes in their environment, even your stress levels can also leave the dog a touch more stressed, which leads to being more sensitive.

Its all down hill now for the poor mut.

I was in Sydney a few years ago. The idea was that you got there early around 10am, lit the BBQ, had some beers (paced of course), played some cricket, had a chat with your mates, had more beers and bbq and then watched the fireworks. It was a real social day out with the fireworks as a finale. Though there were those that literally sat in their seats for 14hrs just to get a good vantage point.

I have a casual call centre job at the moment and did the 10pm-6am shift overnight, 14 levels up in Melbourne CBD. Unbelievable the amount of fireworks going off- Melbourne was ringed by colour.

The economics of having all those people coming into the city means this will never happen now. .drove down King St at 10pm and everywhere was packed...fireworks drag people who spend the $$$$$$$$$$.
You don't think the nightclubs and the tittie bars dragged anyone into King St? People will go out and party on NYE without fireworks.

I get the attraction though, to an extent. They do tend be good to watch (crap on TV, you have to have the smell and the contrast doesn't work). Bugger spending 12 hours waiting for them though, or making much effort really.
In Sydney it is part of the city's attempt at global branding, being the first large(ish) city it seems to be part (a very small part, overblown by our media) of the NYE build up in other countries.

From my house I could see everything, not just in the city but the local fireworks in quite a lot of suburban places as well. As someone pointed out already it was a bit annoying that they went off before midnight, bit trigger happy methinks.
