DUNSTAN! I've been keen on this guy for ages.

Big fan of Dunstan but I reckon Jones exceeds him in the skills department. I reckon Jones is our guy unless we get a crazy slider like Sheed.

Jones just fits the FJ profile.

I'm still of the belief that Brett O'Hanlon will be a part of our side in the future and there isn't really much Ben Lennon can do that he can't. I also don't think Chris Knights should be forgotten.

I thought it was blatantly obvious in our final that we're still a good midfielder short. A genuine crumbing small forward is probably our second need.

Yep pretty much how i feel. I also think we have McDonough coming through who will start forward. Martin and Lids will rotate off a HFF flank as Vlastuin, Helbig, Arnot and Ellis get more time through the middle. Plus pick 12 has to become a midfielder and i feel Lennon has shown the least as a midfielder or any position other then HF and versatility is a major must.

I just think you could get that HFF with a later pick like a reynolds or a sokol. Heck if we were so desperate for one straight away i don't think you could look past Mitch Thorp

Your order change a bit?? I thought you had Dunstan and Acres top 8?? I'd presume both would be at our pick.

Yeah it's changed a tad. Someone pointed out I may be being overly harsh on some of the top prospects so went back and changed my rankings based on a rating system. I've got them 14 & 13 respectively at the moment. While I was re-watching the Champs games I have one guy that just bolted up my rankings. I'm still in the process of finishing it up though.

Edit:

Guys that have gone up: Kelly, Scharenberg, Salem, KK, Billings, Hewett, Cripps, Dumont, Sokol

Guys that have dropped a bit: Aish, Acres, Dunstan.

Agree. I think he's an end of first/early 2nd rounder.

He's an inside midfielder, yet everyone raves about his pace. Tells me his inside skills aren't that great. He didn't really rack them up inside, which suggests he can't be that burst midfielder a la Dangerfield, and even though he has great endurance and speed, he doesn't get it enough outside either.

Can Jones play permanent midfield though? My impression of him was decent kick, but doesn't have the motor for the midfield. Played pretty much all of the champs off half back.

Where do you rate Lennon kp? I still can't believe how bad his combine results were, he looks much better than that on field

I have him at 19 and it's not because I don't rate him, because he does have some very good qualities and is a good character, but I just think that's his spot. I'm quite open to being wrong and realise I will get loads wrong.

Having said all that, and speaking to guys I know at games, he was always around the 15 mark but not quite in the top tier. That was just the general consensus. Then guys like Twomey have really talked him up and he's suddenly shot up. As I said though, we could all be very wrong about him and with there being 18 clubs someone's bound to like him more than everyone else. It happens every year. As I said in another thread, it's not about what pick they go, it's about what they're doing in three to five years.

I find the Vic boys (Metro especially) really get a good run with the media and it's probably because they're the most accesible, it's only natural. I think it plays a tiny part in clouding judgement. Most people obviously aren't that into the draft and of course they just want the popular kid. The last thing they want is for their team to pick some guy they've never heard of. Us picking Conca is probably the biggest and best example.

Sorry I just went on a bit of a tangent there.

Apparently McCarthy has been invited to the draft, pretty good chance he'll be going top 10. Pies or Lions. Maybe we're a small chance to get Salem afterall.

1. Boyd
2. Kelly
3. Billings
4. Aish
5. KK
6. Bontempelli
7. Scharenberg
8. McDonald
9. Freeman
10. McCarthy
11. Sheed
12. Salem

Seems plausible. Freeman to the Dees is probably wishful thinking if Salem is on the table though... sigh. Hope we take Acres (who hasn't been invited yet so probably won't go top 10).

Thanks mate, fully agree. I reckon Acres is an interstate one who's flown under the radar a bit, though his injury helped with that. If he were a Vic boy I think he'd get a lot more press. Really hope we take a punt on him if available.

The Champs can be misleading at times. It's a great indicator for how well they do against better talent but lots of players are played out of position due to the greater talent around them. It's a weird one to assess. You just have to take everything into account. Jones isn't one of them because he did start the year at half-back but he moved into the midfield in the second half of the season and really showed something.

He didn't do the beep test and vo2 max (I'm yet to find out why) but there was no reason to believe he didn't have a tank in his time trial and his repeat sprints were very good.

I think they invite about 13-14 players and Conca had to be invited at the last minute so I wouldn't read much into it.

To invite him this far out they'd have to be pretty sure he's going early. The only teams I can see taking him in the first 13-14 are Lions and Pies.

Going out on a bit of a limb, but if Jones is the person I'm thinking he is from some of the footage I've seen (it all gets to be a bit of a blurr after a while). There was something about him that reminded me of Tom Scully in his draft year. Maybe just the way he moved in traffic........

Maybe because he is a scrawny lightweight as well.

Interested in your thoughts on Trent Dumont as a possible for pick 12. Looking at the write ups on this kid he sounds very much like a kid who would be a FJ special. Inside type of midfielder who can also play a bit of HB/HF or even on the outside of the midfield. He comes across very much like another Conca Ellis & Vlastuin type. Not sure if it's a good or bad thing having 4 similar types, but then again with interchange caps coming in having players who are versatile in where they can play means we can better use the bench.

Zak Jones? Similar in stature to his brother at the same age. He'll fill out nicely.

He most likely will but it will take years and i do believe we have been steering clear of these types.

Nathan Jones from memory was a slow developer.

Dumount reminds me a lot of Vlastuin but isn't the same competitive beast and his disposal is not quite as good. Though for that reason I wouldn't pick him up.

Love him. Has played big minutes against seniors too and relished.

Zak Jones is far from scrawny. James Aish is scrawny.
