IMHO Ghost in the Shell is a much better, more complete move.

Akira would have been great as a series, but as it is they squashed too much into too little and left 1/2 to 2/3 of the story untold.

still love the movie, just manga>movie

Terrific film, lots of great imagery. To be honest I haven't watched it in roughly 5 years. Really should give it another run.

if you can afford it it is well worth it.

currently though it's in 6 roughly 300 page volumes that sell from $45 to $50, so they are a tad pricey.

hmm Ghost in The Shell is better I admit, but Akira really Anime on the map.

Of that there is no question. Any animated movie that actually uses focus blending for dramatic effect deserves bigging up. Plus, a snake fully comes out of a chick's punani!!

Haha true. Ninja Scroll was bloody great, although I'm kicking myself that I still haven't seen Akira in full.

apparently Zac Effron is said to have the lead role in the Akira adaptation with Morgan Freeman circling the role of colonel.

Will probably ruin a classic if that is the case.

Akira, great film that certainly put anime onto the map in the western world at least. That said I prefer Ghost in the Shell, it's blending of cgi and cel animation is still a industry leader.

Live-action adaptations of anime generally turn out to be crap. I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Watch the Deathnote live action as an example... actually dont its f***ing horrible and almost ruined the series for me.
