All very well looking back in hindsight but most on this board did say during the week Fitzgerald should be playing for South Adelaide at Noarlunga today.

Seriously though, how much bad luck can 1 guy have. Damn shame, just when he looked like he was getting over the problems that plagued him at Sydney.

I doubt if he can make a serious recovery of his career from here. I hope I'm wrong though

I actually started this thread about 30 seconds after he fell over clutching his knee...so im sorry for not being able to provide in depth analysis of the situation 30 seconds after the injury occured

You have to ask whether this will end his career. 3rd or 4th reconstruction...hes had a half dozen shoulder reconstruction...hes 26 in october...maybe this could be career ending if the injury is in fact a season ending one.

Altho his form has been non-existant the last 4 or 5 weeks, you could tell he was the player that Adelaide was going to build their future forward line around and this will really throw a spanner in the works. Fitzgerald injured, Schell is useless, Stevens hasnt done a thing up forward this year....i tihnk youll find Adelaide will be throwing their entire salary cap toward Pavlich at the end of this year.

You could tell when he was at South Adelaide 4 or 5 years back that he was going to be a star footballer...such a pity his career has been completely ruined by dodgy joints.

Hopefully for his own sake and for crows fans his injury is either not as bad as it looks, or he can recover from this and continue playing next season.

Poor Ryan

I am devestated.

I feel so very sorry for Ryan. I believe the outcome is not good and he will require his third reconstruction. My heart goes out to the poor guy. To see him in tears after he had done it, well I am not ashamed to say I had a few tears aswell.

How much bad luck can one person have? I know some of you wanted him dropped this week, but I am a firm believer that if it is going to happen it will happen anywhere, so even if he had played for South today, I fear it would have happened anyway.

I am going to write him a letter now, because he needs our support now more than ever. He needs to know that we are behind him and that we want him to get better and fit and have another crack next year. We supported shaun rehn through his three reconstructions, I hope that everyone else gets behind him and supports Ryan just as much.

A bitter pill after today's game. I havent heard of the outcome yet. I don't want to rush in and look for a replacement yet out of compassion for Ryan.

Good call, I was just about to post that. I will be interested to see how Rutten plays tomorrow, I think The Bloods have named him in defence. I think Matt Smith has also been named on the bench for Port Magpies, I hope he gets a run too.

Yeahh, I agree with topjars that if Fitzy is out for the season, Rutten should be promoted. The kid looked raw in pre-season but had good presence about him at CHF. Does anyone know how he has been playing for Westies? Although it is a worry that he is named in a back pocket for today's game against Port.

I can tell you that to be at the game and watch your fave player come down like that, it was devastating. I had tears in my eyes and I am also not ashamed to admit it just like kbcrowgirl. I have heard everyone knocking him over the past few weeks, but how much of a chance did people really give Ryan. Watching him yesterday in the first qtr after missing a goal, it was quite noticable he was extremely disappointed in himself. He was talking to himself, looking at the goals and psyching himself up for the next opportunity. I am disappointed we probably wont get the chance to seem him inprove any further this season.
At the Canberra airport before we (three of us supporters from the Victorian Supporters Group) caught up with some of the players. Most were looking relaxed. Ryan looked on edge wandering, or limping around everywhere, he looked lost. He kept bending over and feeling his knee and cringing. Mark from the supporters group had a chat to him and he said Ryan was very down. I reckon Kristie is right that we need to show we are still here supporting him. I have also written something that I plan to send.
As for the game, it wasn't all bad. However when we play one of the sides higher up on the ladder we had better pull our fingers out and concentrate more. Centre breaks in the first qtr were disgraceful and some of the better players, ie. Stevens and Goodwin need to sharpen up a bit. On a brighter note, the corwd at Canberra was great and I enjoyed meeting all the ACT supporters group members.
I will see everyone at the Carlton game next Sunday where hopefully we will see something better unfold.

According to Channel 10 news tonight, Fitzgerald has had an MRI scan today and it looks like he will be out for 12 months. Expect an official announcement tomorrow.

As for Rutten, I think he is in defence because the Richardson boys are Westies first choice options for FF and CHF. However I watched the Port v West game today and Ben would have to be one of Westies best. I think he got about 15 possesions and had Phillipou taken from the field halfway through the second quarter. Rutten was then sent to stand Beinke (4 goals) and started to get in front of him a couple of times from about halfway through the third. Ben played well, took some good marks and was kicking was pretty accurate. Another Crows player who went well today was Schuback. Ran hard and kicked three goals.

We will not know for a few days how bad it is, but there is still hope that it isn't a 12 month knee injury. Whilst it didn't look good, it didn't look as bad as some other knee injuries.

Jerome - It is good to see too see the Crows listed players in the SANFL with good form. If Beinke is fully fit, I would bring him in for Fitzy next week.

Check out Macca's report of the West-Port match on the regional boards and he is not happy with Beinke and if what Macca says about Beinke's attitude then I don't want him playing for us next week either.

sapaul - I think you will find each news service gave a different scenario on Fitzy's knee because they were all guessing. You can't actually give an exact analysis for a few days until the swelling goes down.

Also, Macca may of been a bit harsh on Beinke with 4 goals. What would he of done if his attitude was OK? IMO, still a better option than Schell.

Seems pretty straight forward to me. It's glaringly obvious our weakness is marking power up forward, Welsh is brilliant but can't be expected to be the focal point for taking contested marks, and there's no telling when Stevens will refind his touch. So what is one of Beinke's main strengths? I know he's only had one game back but they completely unwarrantably elevated Ken McGregor so I think they should give Beinks a go.
It also wouldn't hurt to just chuck Marsh up forward and see what happens, it's not like they he's in demand for any other postitons

You cant just look at statistics and go 'oh he kicked 4 goals he must of done ok'. He kicked those goals in the first half. I dont think he got a kick in the second half...instead of presenting himself he wimped out on a number of occasions, reluctant to attempt to take a mark if it was a pack situation...instead he was skirting the sides of the pack. For our main marking target, this was pathetic and nearly made my blood boil...especially a crucial moment in the last quarter where in one passage of play there were two things where he could of:
a) contested a mark (at least put his arms up for it) against Dion Myles
b) chased and possibly tackled him.
Instead...he did not even get in a position to take or even contest the mark (he would of marked it too as he was in the prime position to come from the side and mark), and he failed to chase Myles as he ran off. This resulted in the sealing West goal.

When the pressure was on in the last quarter and someone needed to stand up and present themselves and take pressure marks, Beinke didnt wanna know. it was left to the 4th or 5th gamer Lokan to stand up and take marks while Beinke preserved his precious body for next week. A poor effort by an experienced player trying to get back into an AFL side.

If his attitude was right he probably could of had another 2-3 goals...as i said on the regional boards...if he is gonna take the soft option and back out of marking contests so he doesnt get hurt then i dont wanna see him in a port guernsey ever again.

well he fell outta the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down...but other than that he played alright. Kicked a few goals, looked to have a bit of class. Probably a fair away from AFL footy at the moment tho

Oh i dunno about that. Its your talls that arent performing. Fitzgerald did nothing for 5 weeks, Stevens hasnt done a thing, Schell is useless...maybe time to try Hewitt up there. I cant see Schuback taking Welshs spot anytime soon

Adelaide has confirmed that giant forward Ryan Fitzgerald has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will miss the rest of the this season. He will have a reconstruction next week.

Fitzgerald joined Adelaide on a one-season contract this year after three injury-riddled seasons with the Swans. He played only 10 matches in that time. He had both shoulders reconstructed, a hernia operation and last year had his left knee reconstructed.

The club has confirmed our worst fears. Ryan needs a full reconstruction on his right knee. Terrible to see the poor boy almost in tears as he spoke about the support he has gotten from his family and friends. Ryan is a happy go lucky type of fellow but this will challenge him just as much mentally as it will physically. He has had 6 operations, 4 major in the past 4 years. He has to get his body and his mind right in order for him to play good footy in the future. My heart goes out to him and I hope that everyone gets behind him and we see plenty of him around during the rest of the season. I have sent him a short note wishing him all the best - it may seem silly that I would do that, but I think if he knows we are thinking of him then it might just help him a little bit. He deserves some luck, lets hope the young guy gets it!
