Hi all,
Please note this is a text version of the unofficial Fitzroy Reds supporter guide. Copies will be available this Saturday at the Richmond-Brisbane game to convert those old Roys who don't know about the Reds:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome to the unofficial Fitzroy Reds supporter guide for season 2001. This is a basic guide to the Reds upcoming season in Section D3 of the Victorian Amateur Football Association. For those who don't know much about the Reds, here's a little background info for you.
The Fitzroy Reds were previously called the University Reds. Aligned with Melbourne University, they wore the black and blue jumper also sported by University Blacks and University Blues. After Melbourne University withdrew support, the club changed its name to the Fitzroy Reds. In 1999, the Reds played at Ramsden Street Reserve in Clifton Hill, before moving to the Brunswick Street Oval in 2000.
The Fitzroy Football Club has supported the Reds in previous seasons, however in 2001, the Fitzroy Football Club will be the major sponsor of the Reds. In the aftermath of our alliance with Coburg, it is encouraging to see Fitzroy getting behind the Reds in a financial manner and supporting a local club in Fitzroy. It's now up to us Fitzroy supporters to get behind the club and support the Fitzroy Reds. Whether it means buying a membership, going to matches, attending functions, we can all help make a contribution.
Fitzroy and/or Brisbane supporters who feel they are above supporting an amateur side, should consider the following:
· The Fitzroy Reds wear the Fitzroy jumper,
· The Fitzroy Reds sing the Fitzroy theme song,
· The Fitzroy Reds play at Fitzroy's spiritual home ground, Brunswick Street;
· They're bloody called Fitzroy!
Season 2001 already looks promising for Fitzroy, with three convincing practice match wins.
I hope to catch up with some of you at the games!
Note: Before each game, a few of us will be meeting at a nominated pub. This is due to the fact that alcohol is banned at V.A.F.A matches. Please feel free to join us for pre-match drinks. Most sessions will kick-off at 12.30pm.
WORDS TO SING AND QUOTE AT BRUNSWICK STREET
1) A poem of support from a washed-up hack barracker :
I've been to 'em.
They's grouse.
You should be at it, them.
If you are, then youse grouse too.
'tis grouse.
2) To the tune of "She'll be coming 'round the Mountain"
We're goin' to Brunswick Street to watch the Roys.
We're goin' to Brunswick Street to watch the Roys.
We're goin' to Brunswick Street,
We're goin' to Brunswick Street,
We're goin' to Brunswick Street to watch the Roys.
And, just like Cincinatti, they're the Reds.
Just like Cincinatti, they're the Reds.
And, just like Cincinatti,
Just like Cincinatti,
Just like Cincinatti, they're the Reds.
And, just like Roys of old, they don't get paid.
Just like Roys of old, they don't get paid.
And, just like Roys of old,
Just like Roys of old,
Just like Roys of old, they don't get paid.
3) To the tune of "House of the Rising Sun"
There is a club on Brunswick Street,
They bear the name Fitzroy,
Their called the Reds and their jumper,
I've worn since I was a boy
They don't play at the Gabba,
At Optus, they don't dwell,
They play their games at Brunswick Street,
Where Roys of yore once fell,
Now the only thing 'bout Brunswick Street,
Is it really needs a Bar,
Cos the Amo's don't like beer,
And the Newry's just too far,
Now Mother, tell your children,
Not to follow the AFL,
They'll take your soul, and kill your dreams,
And steal your money, as well,
I've got one foot on the oval,
The others on the fence,
I'm going out to play kick-to-kick,
Got in at no expense,
Well, there is a club on Brunswick Street,
They bear the name Fitzroy,
Their called the Reds and their jumpers,
I've worn since I was a boy
4) To the tune of "Sesame Street"
Skies are grey, forecast is lots of rain.
I don't care if there's snow or sleet.
Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Brunswick St.
Going through the backstreets of Hawthorn and Kew.
Navigating Auburn is quite a feat.
Just to tell me how to get,
How to get to Brusnwick St.
Cheers,
FitzroyRamone
