fixing Windows Messenger

I have an Acer laptop, and I am having trouble with msn, it downloads, it installs it goes to open and it crashes. I have done some googling of how to fix it and the options that others have tried haven't worked, I have windows vista on this computer.

I use Pidgin mostly to use msn, but would rather use Windows Live.

I don't want to reformat the computer, which someone seems to believe is the only option...I haven't got the resources to save all the files from here onto other stuff yet.

So any ideas?

For Messenger a reformat is too much effort.

Try a web based messenger which lets you log into msn perhaps? Google e-buddy.


Edit: Just saw you prefer Windows Live. Maybe try finding and installing an older version Windows Live messenger ??

I am going to see if I can install the older windows messengers, I guess if all else fails I can hold out until July when i have the money to get a new computer.

You could also try Trillian or Digsby. Digsby's pretty good as it also allows you to connect to facebook chat without having to open facebook itself

Good luck, have had a similar issue for two years, have never fixed it despite many attempts inc. upgrades, re-installs and downgrades.

Are you getting any error codes?

Nope, i install it fine, and then install it, it opens and says "Windows Live Messenger has stopped working." even though it installs correctly and all.

Ok, dunno if this is going to be your answer, but......

A couple of years ago, I had a problem with messenger locking up, shutting down etc...
It turned out to be the Samsung phone software bundle I had installed. As soon as I uninstalled the phone software, MSN hasn't given me a problem. So, it may be a conflict with some other software package...

Could be worth a look...

I just downloaded the program on another computer, one I cannot access regularly and seems to work fine, just won't on the laptop, so I may have to see what I can do.

I also have Samsung phone software on here so hmmm....maybe.
